Northern Tiers, Quetico or Bisset?

Recommended Posts

Time to schedule our 2009 canoeing adventure. Last time the scouts did Quetico Provincial park out of Atikokan base. This time they voted to try Bissett, MB.

Anyone have any insight on the two bases? compare and contrast?

BTW, there was no interest in staying in the good ol' US at Ely. Go figure.

Why not do a do-it-yourself trip? Then it doesn't make any difference where one goes, it's all great territory. We have gone several times and found that it is way less expensive do do our own thing. The planning, organizing and such is just as much fun as the trip. Each time we have gone we have covered 50+ miles/8 days with plenty of portages and have always done our own planning, etc.

We talked about it, but the boys want to qualify for the Triple Crown award. When we did Rogert and Quetico, we crossed paths with a few troops/crews on the water that worked through other outfitters. Seems the outfitters have newer, more updated gear and none of the NTiers rules and regs.

I can't speak for either of those programs, but if you or anyone else is interested the GNFC runs a program for tripping in Algonquin Park. We went with the GNFC program once and this year plan to go on our own. Either way Algonquin is a beautiful trip. Tons of routes of all skill levels to choose from and if you want to go yourself lots of outfitters.

Even if you don't use their outfitting service you should still stop in the Algonquin Outfitters store, very cool.
