kittle
I have been very lucky at finding uniforms at thrift stores and rummage sales. I was at one of the local thrift stores this week when I found and adult XL sirt for $3. I wasn't even looking for Scout shirts, I was just walking down the aisle and saw the shirt. About 6 months ago, I found a brand new with tags youth XL with Webelos scarf for $0.50. And a couple of months before that, a youth large tan shirt for $0.50. I have not set out to build a closet of uniforms, but when you find them that cheap you don't pass them up. At the moment, 4 of the local Cub Scout pack are wearing uniforms that I have purchased. My son and I both have uniforms and there are 4 more hanging in my closet.
bfletcher
We did have a closet for our pack. I found myself picking up uniforms, scarfs, slides etc. It was a great way to get all our scouts in uniform. We also got members to donate their used uniforms when they out grew them or crossed over to boy scouts. We also allowed trade in for uniforms if you needed a larger size. frankj
I love scrounging. What surprises me about these thrift store finds you mention, is that the folks donating this stuff to the thrift store don't first think of contacting the Scout organization. Or, perish the thought, maybe they did and were met with indifference.
flmomscoutw3
I am always keeping my eyes open when I go to the thrift stores for scout stuff. In additon to uniforms I like to look at the tee shirts for scout camp/scout event shirts. Our scouts are encouraged to where scout related shirts at campouts and when they cross over most boys have just Cub stuff. They would rather wear Boy Scout stuff, so I have extras to give to new scouts who don't have older brothers to get the stuff from. My boys realy like to find the "0ld" stuff at the thrift stores. My yougest loves to wear a tee from summer camp for the year he was a wolf or bear. Good Hunting, Fl Mom Scout w3
Vigil-Hiker
My wife checks the local thrift shop every two weeks during the week (I usually have my son at Saturday morning football practice/Scout event/hike/baseball game - so she checks for me). We got a youth med. Boy Scout shirt for $1. He is a Bear, but will be needing a tan shirt sometime next winter. It had a couple of ink stains, but a little stain/ink remover and serveral washes later, it was stain free. Worst-case senario, it would have been used for camping/hiking to preserve a "clean" shirt for uniform inspections/BOR's, etc. We also check ebay. Got his cub scout shirt for $12 and a Red Wool Jac-Shirt for $60 from there. I suggest also looking for camping gear at thrift shops too. May find cast-iron skillets or dutch-oven to cook over a fire. Occassionally I have seen daypacks and backpacks at ours. We got a child-carrier to carry my 3 year-old in on hikes last summer (Smokies and Shennodoah Nat. Parks) from a thrift shop. Check out flea markets. I will take a look at one near my parents next time I visit them, I had some scouting fiends who picked up a few items from there(uniform shirts/belts, utensil sets, etc).(This message has been edited by Vigil-Hiker)
