scoutldr
I tuned out the LNT instructor when he said that "human waste" (as if it's worse than "animal waste") had to be placed in a section of PVC pipe, capped off, and slung over your shoulder to be carried around with you. If that's not bidegradable, I don't know what is. If it's good enough for bears, it's good enough for me.
Trevorum
scoutldr, Your LNT instructor may have been mistaken or may have been misunderstood. LNT is not a set of inflexible one-size-fits-all rules. Rather it is an ethic. There are some situations where human waste is not biodegradable (tundra, alpine) or is unusually polluting in a contrained ecosystem (caves, river canyons). In these limited situations, a 'poop tube' is recommended. However. for most backcountry camping and hiking, cat holes are perfectly fine. Trench latrines are not recommended except for long-term camping in disturbed areas.
