Our troop has been asked to participation in a Walk-a-Mile fund driver for St Jude research Hospital. Can we do this as a service project and can we wear our uniforms?

Do it, in Uniform! What are they going to do, eat you? Can you think of a better cause? Heaven forbid Scouts in uniform might be associated with helping to raise money for a premier hospital dedicated to SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN!

 

Has it come to this that we have to ask if we can wear the Uniform on a mission of mercy? It's not like your supporting a political candidate at a rally!

 

Tour Permit it as a hike, isn't that what it really is?

 

As to the Service Project I would say yes to that also. As contributing to SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN is most assuredly "service" in the purest sense of the word!

 

Just as a side note: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital is named after St. Jude because he is the patron saint of lost, or hopeless causes! "Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast day is October 28."

Since wearing the uniform could be seen as the BSA giving endorsement to the fundraising activities of St. Judes then you need the permission of the Scout executive. The uniform is a registered trademark of the BSA and you unit does not have the legal authority to use it to endorse ANYTHING that has not been approved by the local Scout Executive.

Go call an Executive before you try any of the above in Uniform! Gimme a break Bob White, it's St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital for crying out loud! Your moral compass should point to "S" and that stands for: SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN!

The point is, if a troop is going to raise funds, a money-earning application needs to be completed and submitted for approval prior to the event. It's not much different than filing a tour permit. BSA needs to know what the units are doing. Its not proper for units to decide that their event is saving lives or whatever and should be exempt from the normal process. Just take 2 minutes and file the application. Simple.
