The BALOO wash presentation still includes the "rinse thru" method to clean/disinfect the wash tubs. "Wash Water" should not get mucky if they scape off the plates/pots. Although, when I "breeze" by the workstations, sometimes I have to say out loud "where's your trash can for the scrapings".....and then I walk on. I have not seen a Scout "bleach" a uniform in the last 3-4 years...but I expect not too many wear their "full uniform shirt" when in "wash detail". I'd rather see a "bleach spot" than deal with scalds.(This message has been edited by dg98adams) -

When I cover that section in BALOO, I make it simple.... Cub Leaders (and Boy Scouts) have enough to remember. Besides our boys usually only have 1 spoon handy. USE THE CAP the bleach comes in (~quarter-sized cap) If you have a big tub (1 gal. or more) = 1/2 to full cap. If you have a small tub ( -
Solid cord works better for the woggle. There are plenty of different ways to "tie" the necker. Using cord you can come up with the "knot of the month".... or use cord to attach almost anything for a "slide". I have several I wear, including my WB woggle and I mix it up.

I am getting off cheap this summer (well not really). A#1 son will be 2nd year camp staff (was CIT last year, and will be again if he is not a paid staffer). A#1 daughter (they are both #1's because they are twins) is hoping for paid staff but will stay if just CIT. She is a Venturing Crew member (along with her Scout brother). But there's $$ in sending A#1 son to Jambo (1st for the Troop). Taking the family to WVa camping & 1 day visit to Jambo as well. I may volunteer at the pool for the Troop's week at camp this summer. I know, it's a tough Lifeguard/MB instructor job, but someone has to do it. (This message has been edited by dg98adams)

I think our chapter has three 6' sashes and they are vinyl. Usually see them hanging in front of the dining hall on OA weekends. Any local sign shop could probably make them up....(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

Most times I think the Scout had a friend show.....it's 50/50 on getting them later. To get beyond the "verbal", the Scouts created a post card with a picture of a cool troop event and used that. If the invitee did not want to come after getting the card, trust the Scout to extend credit.

I hope you are including the Field Museum, which is right next door. Look for churches in the area. You might get one with a kitchen, where you can stay or be hosted by a Troop. -

BrentAllen, IMO, I don't "read" that unit numbers on a registered adults Scout shirt was an issue.... but when adults play the "game of Scouting" to better understand the "Patrol Method" (and in training courses like WB, etc...) Patrols and Patrol patches come into play. I do agree that once the training is over, registered adults are not youth Scouts and Patrols & Patrol patches are for youths. Keep it easy.... any adult camping when the Troop camps, is camping as either a registered leader and expected to be involved (normally) in some kind of Scout interaction as needed. Untrained parents/guardians camping are observers only, and should not be involved with Scout interaction. As a ASM when we are at Troop functions or on a Patrol camping/event, I treat my son no different than any other Scout. Probably the only scouts who need much assistance anymore are the NSP. -
If you can't cook without alcohol on a Scout outing then stay home. The adults/leaders (and that's really all you should be cooking for) can be an example of better prepared meals. There are thousands upon thousands of camp menus that don't require alcohol. It's a banned substance at the local camp we go to. From the G2SS The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances at encampments or activities on property owned and/or operated by the Boy Scouts of America, or at any activity involving participation of youth members.

Expectations agreed on the performance of a POR is worked out not only before a Scout in our Troop takes his POR, but he gets counseled during his tenure. One element (attendance, participation or what ever you want to call it) I speak to, is the reality that the Scout won't be able to make every meeting/outing/function... but the expectation is he is to "prepare" and "confirm" either his assistant or an older Scout goes to fill in for him and lets him know about the event/outing/meeting. That will be noted on the monthly ASM Mentor (with the ASPL) review of the POR when counseling him. It's not useful or responsible to wait till the end of the POR to tell him he is not doing his job.

CalicoPenn I like the idea of green sticks tied in a bundle as a scrubber if needed. I would not advocate "steel wool" on cast iron. A Plastic scrubber pad (or scotch brite) is what we have in the Troop Patrol box. A Scotch pad on a cast iron pot/skillet after it has burned out old food or rust has always worked for us. I think we have cheapie D.O.'s, so there is some effort every year getting them ready.

From the bugler Merit Badge book, #6 Serve as bugler in your troop for three months. Our Troop used another Troops requirements/responsibility (be flexible on bugler's experience - attempts at calls are better than none, IMO). Wiki says: Responsibilities * Makes appropriate bugle calls, as requested, at troop/team activities. Notes 1. Serving as Bugler can apply towards positions of responsibility requirements for Star and Life but not Eagle. 2. In many troops/teams the Bugler plays a trumpet instead of a bugle. 3. Serving as Bugler is a requirement for Bugling Merit Badge. 4. Being able to play a bugle or trumpet can be used towards requirement 1 of Music Merit Badge: Sing or play a simple song or hymn chosen by your counselor using good technique, phrasing, tone, rhythm, and dynamics. Read all the signs and terms of the score. 5. Get the Cubs out to parks, local camp, and hike. Have fun. Easy to guide the fun to meet goals. Throw in a campfire or 2 and you are golden.

At a minimum, the Committee needs to be informed of an escalation of more than pushing & shoving. A sock to the face and attempted strangling is not something to brush off. Possible negligence. A scuffle, where both Scouts are similar size, equally at fault, and suffer minimal but equal damage, maybe just bounce them both from the outing. Maybe. Still the committee need informed (in writing preferred) I am gonna bet the aggressor is bigger/and older. Am I close?

I was staff (TG) on the recent course in our Council. Was a participant 2 courses back. Took a year of once-a-month meetings before the course started (really 5-6 good ones) and 1 staff training weekend, 3+ days more needed than participants the 1st week for setup....2nd week was 2+ days extra for setup & tear down. It's a commitment that several others could not meet and had to drop. I would not hesitate to step up again as asked...the only problem....I think every other staff position did not look as fun (and was definitely more work) than TG.

Do you intend to retire the flags by fire? This can be very dangerous as many flags our Troop collects are synthetic and produce a large amount of heat and flame when draped on a campfire/pyre. Flag retirements can be as simple as reciting the Cub Scout pledge, and with reverence draping a flag over flame. You could ask your Boy Scout Den chiefs (or other Boy Scouts) to do the actual draping of the flag over the fire (assuming you intend to do it that way), while the Cubs sing a Patriotic song, recite Cub Scout Law, etc... With Cubs, KIS..."keep it simple" is the best idea. As CM we did several retirements on campouts. In a indoor meeting, you could do a retirement with a "folding ceremony", where several Cubs Ceremoniously remove the flags from a pole, and fold the a final time. A nicely decorated box to receive the folded flags for a later respectful disposal would be good. Recover the grommets for recognizing veterans or other significant participants. What do you do with scouts who just do too little, especially when they do not respond at all to counseling? If "too little" means they are not working toward meeting the expectations they areed on... then they are NOT meeting expectations. If "too little" is "in your opinion he could do more than just the agreed expectations" then it's your TJLT or job description and maybe his past experience that he is doing what he thinks is needed. If they don't respond to counciling by the 2nd month - remove them. This is assuming he gets TJLT when he assumes the position and knows whats expected. If the PL feels he is doing the best he can, and the Patrol members are ok with it, keep counciling and keep them in position. If the Patrol wants a change, let them know they need to voice it before the POR is earned full term and act accordingly. It does sound like your Patrols are sorta small to be functional.
