Oversleeping is a choice. The Scout making that choice may/should be aware of the results of that choice like any other choice. I don't think any extraordinary measures should be taken other than reasonably announcing "Last call" outside the tent. The tent may or may not be the property of the Troop or the responsibility of the Patrol. Extremely loud sound (bull horn blasting reveille next to his ear) or dropping or messing with a tent is not very Scout-like and could result in damage, and who is responsible for that? If I was the late sleeper, and a tent got dropped on me I would NOT pay for any damage or accept responsibility for it. And after my military experience, reveille blasted next to my ear, may get an un-Scout-like physical response. If the late sleeper does not have a leadership related position to the outing or is not assigned for breakfast prep (to include dishes/cooking/prep), the only result is going without Camp/Patrol prepared hot food. Who knows, maybe he has medical reason or was assigned late night activity via the SM and excused for morning activity. But after confirming (at least with the SPL/SM) sleeping late is not a result of assigned late-night duty or extraordinary circumstance..... And if the scout is needed for breakfast (dishes/cooking/prep/camp break down) and chooses to skip his job responsibilities, the SPL/(and any portion of the PLC) IMO has some suggested ways that don't involve hazing or potential personal/property damage: #1 - SM counsel him that the behavior is not acceptable... and work out the issue, as well as going without the Patrol prepared hot food.. #2 - Have the SPL/PLC remove him from his POR as well as going without the Patrol prepared hot food. #2 - Go ahead and have breakfast, but the entire Patrol is excused from camp cleanup, break-down and the Scout must do it by himself as well as going without the Patrol prepared hot food. Object lesson - you are not a Patrol of 1. (This message has been edited by dg98adams)

If they can't reference something, then it's likely something some one else heard and told them. A simple knife IS recommended. It can have a locking blade or not. Locking blades are good, but depending on the knife, they be a problem for small hands to close safely (which is part of the exercise - closing the knife).

What it comes down to... yeah, your Troop resource has the training (even though not current) to manage the Swim Tests for your Troop. Enough for camp .... maybe, but probably not. The Aquatics Dir. may challenge 1 or all... especially if a weak "swimmer" slips by and does not exhibit swimmer ability. I am current with BSA Lifeguard and YMCA Lifeguard, a Council Approved SSD & SA trainer, and have had issues with camp even though I "sign" Troop swim tests with my cert#/date. That's requirement #3, so yeah. We try to make sure a Scout can do that before signing up for swimming MB at Camp, as soon as they join the Troop. Here is Swimming MB #3 #3 - Before doing the following requirements, successfully complete Second Class rank requirements 7a-7c and First Class rank requirements 9a-9c * Second Class rank requirements: o (7a) Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe swim. o (7b) Demonstrate your ability to jump feet first into water over your head in depth, level off and swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, then return to your starting place. o (7c) Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects. Explain why swimming rescues should not be attempted when a reaching or throwing rescue is possible, and explain why and how a rescue swimmer should avoid contact with the victim. * First Class rank requirements: o (9a) Tell what precautions should be taken for a safe trip afloat. o (9b) Before doing the following requirements, successfully complete the BSA swimmer test. Jump feet first into water over your head in depth, swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating. o (9c) With a helper and a practice victim, show a line rescue both as tender and as rescuer. (The practice victim should be approximately 30 feet from shore in deep water). (This message has been edited by dg98adams)

If all the "fun stuff" is done on Saturday, I have observed it that some Scouts tend to not want to stay over and work to clean/pack up. The boys (on their own) came to the conclusion, if a Scout needs to leave early (for whatever issue), then that Scout needs to put in "extra time/effort" whatever if possible. I would not sign off on any "overnight" if the Scout did not stay. This also should not be credit for the Camping MB, or OA eligibility. Save some fun stuff to do Sunday morning - 5 mike hike, physical fitness, Scouts own service, etc....

I see 2 areas where this is reflected in my own Troop even though they get better every year, but is common to the units I am Unit Commissioner for. #1 - Communication - About whats going on via calendar generated by the PLC and made available to the Committee, Scouts and Parents where changes and cancellations are rare. #2 - Program - Doing what the Scouts enjoy - to own the program. A lot of the fun advancement comes on camping outings (cooking, tents, etc..), Aquatic activities & hikes. Service projects are opportunities, if the Scout does to want to participate....there should not be a compulsion - but they must be getting approval for Service projects/time elsewhere or how could they progress past Tenderfoot.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

Safeguarded Wood Badge Discussions?
dg98adams replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
This is an interesting topic, especially since I have been a participant and a TG. Want to see a reaction, ask about going "out of Council for WB", even though we had a couple in the last course come from "out of our Council" But not to derail the topic... ever notice how many WB neckers/beads you see at Council/District events volunteering? Often they have sons who have grown and gone. A few I know have sons/daughters/spouse that have completed the course. I didn't realize it much when I was CM.... even thought it was strange with the "faded red neckers & wood necklaces". Now that I have been a ASM for several years, and a WB'er myself it's significant. -
Only thing I could think of is that D.O.'s are heavy....and may not be part of Pack equipment since camping is family style. I know when I was CM we used them, because a few adults had them. Cubs do foil dinners (main stay of BALOO training), why not D.O.? I couldn't find anything in the G2SS. Me-thinks just a bogus comment.

Safeguarded Wood Badge Discussions?
dg98adams replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I agree, no protected forum needed for WB. IMO the only discussion on the board for WB concerned a very minor object lesson. If you know the desired outcome going in, you would likely keep quiet. In fact, I found the object of that lesson not very useful anyways. -
Would a Cub Scout Klondike qualify as a day camp?
dg98adams replied to mrssand's topic in Cub Scouts
IMO the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award is specific - and probably more intended to get Cubs to Day camp and Webelos to Resident camp.. ------------------ Requirements All Ranks Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camp. ------------------ So with all due respect, if Klondike would suffice, then it would list it. If you have Tigers that have everything else done but Day Camp, get the advancement paper work for the award ready to turn in the 1st day of Day Camp and award the patch the last day of Day camp at the Camp fire to the Tigers.(This message has been edited by dg98adams) -
In the Jambo meeting my son had last night the SM wants Scout related t-shirts if the Jambo Troop T-shirt is not worn.... from summer camp, home Troop etc.

For the Troop I serve, our Troop Lifeguards and I have covered Troop swim tests before camp every year. Course, I am a certified YMCA Lifeguard as well as BSA lifeguard and camp staff at-large so I sign the unit swim-check form. I only had 1 year when the new Aquatic director (who did not know me) and wanted to challenge all units with pre-camp swim tests. This was voiced during the SMs Pre-Summer Camp meeting, even though on the form it allows outside camp certification. Since I do swim checks for several units, the other SMs 2nded my integrity and the Aquatic director eased up. But, we had a Scout join up right before camp, signed up for the swimming MB and missed any opportunity to take the BSA swim test with the Troop. I think our SM took his mom's word he could swim. He was unable to pass any swim test the 1st day of camp and had to settle for instructional swim lessons all week. Get them done before camp. Keep an eye out for those able to pass the requirements for the BSA swim test, but are not ready for swimming MB. (This message has been edited by dg98adams)

Whats the job of your Troops ASMs
dg98adams replied to Albert_H's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Just to clarify a bit. The Troop I serve is still fairly new, less than 7 years old. Once I had Scouts with lifesaving MB & BSA Lifeguard, they took on the Safe Swim/Safety Afloat duties for Scouts. I still cover SS/Safety Afloat for Troop & District for the Adults when needed. The Life Saving/BSA Life Guard Scouts are actively managing the swim skills req. for rank and Troop swim tests and water outings. I sign the troop swim tests for camp, as yet no Scout has gotten Nat. Camp School, Red Cross or YMCA certified. I work less every year and concentrate on swim lessons. We're only talking 3 certified Scouts out of 40, and I worked with all 3 for Swim/Life Saving & BSA LG so I know they know their stuff. None have taken the new Boating Rescue courses. The Advancement ASM was doing the job before I came in, so that's direction the SM wants. -
Whats the job of your Troops ASMs
dg98adams replied to Albert_H's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The Troop I serve is a mix of stated above. SM approves/chooses/endorses adults (make/female) for ASM, as any parent/guardian can serve on the Comm (with the note that they are expected to get trained for the position at the next opportunity or not be rechartered). There is a dedicated ASM doing advancement records & Blue Cards via Troop Master. One ASM for co-ordinating outdoor activities with what ever Scout is SPL/ASPL & PLC. An ASM for aquatic (swim tests, swim/lifesaving MB, Troop swim lessons/Safe Swim training, Safety Afloat training). -
Training needed to take Webelos camping ?
dg98adams replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I expect you have Webelos leader position training (that way you know about Guide to Safe Scouting, fire safety 2 deep leadership, etc....) and hazardous weather training (online). Have you prepared a tour permit? As i think our council has blocks on the form for required training. The confusion is likely because Webelos are still Cub Scouts. -
If this DC has been doing the job for 3 years, has your CM completed the DC award paperwork? Get that paperwork, it's easy to fill out and he certainly has the tenure and needs recognized. UC's are supposed to offer help/guidance, not make demands or make-up policy Otherwise your DC is doing the job.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

safest - over charcoals Box oven - (have them foil line printer paper boxes) * cookies * bagel pizza's (sauce, pepperoni & cheese) Important part here is the Cubs do the prep work, but once they put the item in the oven, you need a side activity. open fire - need to watch more carefully * hiking stick rolls (foil 1 end of the hiking stick, wrap with cinnamon dough, and have Cubs roast till done or as long as they can stand it, which is usually not done). You can pray some PAM on it, and make a hollow twinkie, then slide it off and fill with whipped cream - takes longer, but fun. Important part here is the Cub needs patience and is 100% actively involved. Walking Tacos - easy/safe Cubs select from different ingredients that are already chopped, sliced and/or hot to put on a small bag of corn chips.(This message has been edited by dg98adams) If you have a grill - charcoal or over an open fire. Spider dogs - (hot dogs cut lengthwise 1/3rd on each end - leave the center 1" intact for a skewer) The dog will curl up and resemble a "spider", slap on a hamburg bun.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

My son and daughter are likely to be on camp staff this year (2nd time for my son who is a Life Scout, 1st time for my daughter who is on the Venturing Crew). The wife and I wanted to add some clothing labels and thought it would be a good idea since my son is going to the Jamboree this year too. I had planned to use the link below because of good feedback from Scout Parents: http://www.identifind.com/ But the site is down. Any other suggestions than just using "google"? DG

My son is going to the Jamboree this year... He has done some minor fundraising with the Jambo Troop that turned in all profit $ to the Council Office. And he even paid a payment or two from allowance/birthday $. But mostly it was bank-of-dad. If he for some reason did not go, IMHO I think any fund raised $, raised for Jambo, should not be pulled back to the Troop Scout acct. I can see where if a Scout earned a big % of the cost or more thru "Jambo fundraising" and then couldn't go gets sticky. My opinion, Jambo fundraising stays with Jambo Troop.
