  1. All we need now is a rubber chicken. Or does the dining hall already have that in abundant supply?
  2. Yeah, but that thread is dying out. @Scoutmomonly presented us with a scenario in which the SM and the ASM acted on their own. @mab0221 seems to be asking a question about a SM and ASM who are seeking prior approval to conduct an inspection/search of the tents and backpacks. Do I understand this correctly?
  3. Unfortunately, There have been a lot of movies and TV shows about kids befriending wild animals. Flipper, Gentle Ben, Free Willy, etc.. They never take the POV that it is a very bad idea to do so. This causes some people to go out into natural environments not understanding the difference between fiction and reality.
  4. Welcome to the forum. I'm Catholic. We don't have an annual Congregational Meeting. So please forgive me if I don't completely understand how you do things. My feeling is that your Boy Scout troop should follow the same procedures that are customarily followed for all of the other programs and activities at your Church. If all of the other programs submit a budget for approval at the Congregational Meeting, then your troop should do so too. I am reluctant to comment on whether or not your Church treats people like children, since we customarily refer to our clergy as "father".
  5. Would you happen to know if it is a common practice for Canada? Or were the Canadian scouts just trying to mess with us?
  6. There is a disagreement. I'm not sure that there was a mistake. It doesn't do any good to insist that someone admit to a mistake when not everyone agrees that a mistake was made. Better to call it a disagreement. When you talk with the boys, you should help them to understand that opinions may differ on this question. Practices vary from place to place and person to person. This might help turn this into a conversation rather than an accusation.
  7. I would agree with you here if the OP hadn't specifically asked about policy in her opening sentence. I think we are simply responding to her question.
  8. I am surprised at the number of people who are shocked at the idea that a scout leader might see their son's underwear. I grew up in the days when many people still dried their laundry outdoors on a clothes line. We would have laughed at the idea of a boy being embarrassed about a scout leader seeing his underwear.
  9. This is where I disagree. It should be the Chartered Organization's policy that prevails in this situation. If the CO is a church or school that regularly searches the luggage before an overnight trip, then it should be the same with the Boy Scout troop. If the CO doesn't conduct searches, then they shouldn't search the Boy Scouts either.
  10. I agree. My concern isn't with a child attending one event like this. It is having the child exposed to multiple events like this. I really don't want a kid to go through this every time he signs up for an activity at school, church, scouts, park district, YMCA, little league, etc..
  11. A perfectly reasonable precaution. I think many people would feel that searching the bags is a perfectly reasonable precaution.
  12. I was a teacher in the 80's. I am less concerned about how these "trust" issues are changing the relationships between the Scoutmaster and the Scouts than I am with how they are changing the relationships between Scouts and other Scouts. This new tenting policy has me bewildered. A Scout is Trustworthy, but you can't sleep in the same tent together.
  13. 85% of the students at my school have never received an office referral. It is the other 15% who cause all the trouble. Most of my students aren't worried about the teachers or the administrators. They are worried about being targeted by the 15%. They want us to have the tools in place to deal with the troublemakers. Once it is explained to students that these searches are a necessary tool in our efforts to protect them and keep them safe, most students are appreciative and cooperative. The other 15% object constantly.
  14. I don't think so. One of the reasons we do routine locker inspections at school is so students cannot claim that they have an expectation of privacy. This way, if and when a serious concern arises, the students cannot challenge a search. They have no expectation of privacy. We are not saying, "We don't trust you." We are saying, "We do not want to establish an expectation of privacy." It is exactly the same with overnight trips (including scouts, sports, and band). We do not want to have any policy, practice, or procedure that would legally establish an expectation of privacy.
  15. Of course he doesn't trust the scouts. He has good reason to not trust the scouts. He found prohibited/regulated items in the scouts' gear. The scouts lost his trust, and they will now need to earn it back.
  16. It sounds to me like this is a unit problem. You don't just disagree with the Scoutmaster. You disagree with half of the families in your unit. This disagreement needs to be settled at the unit level.
  17. The boys should trust their scoutmaster. They should consider him to be trustworthy. They should feel comfortable with him, and should not even hesitate in allowing him to inspect their gear.
  18. Not only should it be allowed, it should be required. It is called an inspection. It used to be a routine matter for Boy Scouts to present themselves, and their gear, for inspection, before leaving for camp. It should be a unit policy, and all scouts and parents should be aware of it. At my school, all lockers are subject to search by an administrator, at any time. There is no expectation of privacy. Before any field trip (scouts, sports, band), all bags and luggage are opened and inspected before leaving the campus. There is no expectation of privacy. As a parent, you should be more concerned with your child's safety than with his privacy.
  19. This is probably true. If he has tried it 5 or 6 times, and still doesn't like it, then he has given it a fair shot and should find some other activity. How about baseball?
