Should I take Wood Badge?
dancinfox replied to Mike_Fossler's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
As everyone above said, take the course. It not only will make you a better leader, and will help in your profession, but it will make you a better person when just dealing with every day people. When you go, I hope you are privileged enough to be a FOX. All the creatures are great, but when it comes to being clever, the FOX RULES. Dancin -
Had the pleasure of receiving a call from dsteele last night and got me thinking. Dave made a comment that if the volunteers took care of their District Exec, the Exec could take a lot of heat from his boss. I agree with this. We just received a new DE in our district and one of the first things we did was to donate money into a coffer to purchase a gift certificate for $75.00 at a very fine restaruant for the DE's new wife. He graduated from college on the 15th of Sept. Got married on the 30th of Sept and started his job in our district on the 15th of October. We've been without a DE for about a year. Prior DE has cancer and had to bow out of the profession. We are going to give the gift certificate to her at roundtable Thursday. I have had many DE's who have been friends over the years, and I know how lonely their wifes can be. I don't know if this will help our new DE, but I don't think it can hurt. Dancin

I am in DS's old council that uses the four and three diget numbering system. Twice I've been able to change a pack's unit number to match the troops ie: 3609 and 609, 3631 and 631. We just did it a recharter and the council processed it. dancin

What patrol--------------
dancinfox replied to troop_358_potlatch's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I used to be a FOX and a double FOX TOO. I'm to busy working, to know what to do. Dancin -
Thanks everyone, I am looking forward to next year and the Jamboree. I hope we can pick a place and meet and talk for a while. Dave, thanks for the words, they do mean a lot to me. John R (who is the course director) and myself have got 95% of the staff we picked on board and are hoping to have a full course of 56 for our course in August and September. Dave, as you know, John likes to share leadership, and I have been involved in decision making since being picked to be the BCD. The Jambo position is new, but I feel I can handle it. Will keep everyone posted. YIS David Harrison Dancin Fox

question about age requirements concerning eagle
dancinfox replied to hsoj's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The requirements for Eagle are: unless as KS said there are extenuating circumstances. You have until your 18th birthday to complete any merit badges for the Rank of Eagle. (ie: you can't work on any merit badges or get them signed off after you turn 18. Your Eagle project has to be completed before your 18th birthday. You have up to 3 months to complete your Board of Review for the Rank of Eagle after you turn 18. Also, do you have 6 months from the time you earned Life to your 18th birthday. If not, you can't earn the Rank of Eagle. There is one other thing. If you are in Special Education Classes, check with your council. In some cases you can work on Rank Advancement past the age of 18. Dancin -
I am proud to say I am Right Handed. My wife is right handed. Both my children are left handed. Where did I go wrong? Are they my children? Never thought to ask the postman which hand he uses!!! Dancin

As they say, "Old Scouters never die, they just take a new position" Our Council Commissioner who is a friend of mine always tells me that if you feel like leaving your old position and taking on a new one, then you should never feel guilty. I think that is sound advice. By the by, you did not answer the question I sent you by private mail. Did you not get it? Dancin

Behind the scenes leader - must I wear a uniform?
dancinfox replied to CharityAK's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I believe the one of the things that all unit leaders should do it set the example. In the troop I serve, I go to every meeting in full uniform with my troop neckerchief and troop slide on. I expect it of the Assistant Scoutmasters and any troop committee members that are at the meetings. I can't expect to tell the Scouts to be in full uniform unless the example is set. Dancin -
Whenever a Scout in the Troop that I serve receives his Eagle, I present them with a special name tag. I buy them from quartermasterstore.com for around $6.00. It has the BSA Eagle on the side and I put the Scout's name, then EAGLE SCOUT, then the troop number. The Scout's like it. Sometimes I present them with a extra gift of a Eagle Scout Bolo, or neckerchief slide. Dancin

A few years back, we went to all the banks in the area of our district and asked them to sponsor tickets for the Eagle Scouts. We had about 6 banks donate 40 tickets for the Eagles. The dinner tickets were around 10.00 each. The parents or leaders from the troops where the eagles came from all attended with the Eagles. All told, we had around 150 people in attendance. That was one of the bigest dinners the district ever put on. Dancin

Ron, I wouldn't sweat it. Once dad finds out that his son is like all the other scouts, messy, he'll either tent on his own or with another adult. Dancin

I went to COPE training in 2000. We played the name game, but you had to come up with a nickname. I was Dancin David. I am a Wood Badge Fox, thus, dancinfox Dancin

To be a MB Counselor, you do not have to be registered with a unit or district, or council. You do have to fill out an adult application indicating it is for a MB Counselor position. This is then forwarded to your district advancement person to forward it to the council. If you are registered with a unit, you still have to fill an adult application to become a MB Counselor.

In Rat Tails the rope goes from the back pocket to the floor and about 3inches drags on the floor. The scout steps on the draging rope and the rat runs away from their attacker, thus the rope is pulled out. You can use cardboard squares of different colors to play Black Knight White Knight. Dancin

In our troop meetings some of the games we play are: White Knight, Black Knight. We use the different colored tiles of the church basement and all scouts are White Knights except one who is the Black Knight. The scouts can only move like a Knight in a chess game. When Black Knight is called, only the Black Knight's can move. When White Knight is called, only the White Knights can move. The object of the game is for the Black Knights to capture the White Knights. When a Black Knight captures a White Knight, the White Knight then becomes a Black Knight. The game goes on until there is only one White Knight left. That scout is the winner. Another game is called Rat Tails. Each scout places a colored piece of rope in their back pocket. Divide the troop in half. One half gets one color, the other half gets another color (ie: red and black, or blue and gold.) The object is to pull the rope out of your opponets pocket using only your feet. The scouts can't kick each other. The winning side is the last rat standing.

Laurie, Buy the Packmaster computer program. Ask your council registar to download the pack information form ScoutNet. Packmaster will let you upload the information on the Scouts and adults. This will include Names, addresses, phone #'s etc. You will have to print out advancement sheets on each scout and information sheets on the scouts and adults to gather further information (ie: rank advancement, parents, auto's etc.) This will keep your advancement organized, will do advancement forms for the council. You can give each Den Leader a copy of the program to use for just their den. Then they can give you a disk with their den's advancement to upload to the computer holding all the information. This is a good first step in getting organized. Dancin

We give all but .50 cents to the Scout accounts. Our council gives us .50 cents per product if we give them a check on the date due. This goes into the general fund. The rest of the profit go to the Scouts. Over the last few years we have raised our dues once from $24.00 per year to $36.00 per year. Dancin

Ann, Yes you can. Go ahead and wash in with soap. Scrub it with a plastic scruber. When done getting off the burnt food, place in on the stove with flame or over coals with water. When the water boils, dump it out, and boil water again. When done boiling the second time, dry off good, rub the whole dutch oven with lard, not a lot, just coat the whole oven, including the cover. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees, and place the dutch oven in the oven for at least one hour. This will take the caked on food off the dutch oven and recure it. Remember after each use to boil hot water in it, scrub it with a plastic scruber, and rub a little veg. oil on the inside. The use a dry clean cloth or towel to wipe off the excess oil. This will keep it cured. Remember that dutch ovens will have some crusting on them. Use Alum. Foil on the inside to keep food from burning on the inside. I also oil the outside of my dutch ovens to keep them from getting rusty. Good Luck Dancin

FOG, Since your last dance with Bob White, I have read most of your postings and have not seen Bob reply with any negitive posts. I would think that face to face, Bob White uses tact with any one he talks with. It's a little harder to do in this board. I would suggest just posting and not worry about anything else. Dancin

Mark, Is it possible that the District Advancement Chair didn't know the project was already done when he approved it. He has the right to explain to the Scout that this is not an Eagle project but a service project because the Scout did not follow the rules laid down in the Life packet. If this is the case, I as AC would want to correct my mistake before things got to far. If he did ask the Scout if he had started the project and the Scout said no, then I would talk to the Scout about the the first point of the Scout Law, Trustworthry, and let him know he has to do the process over again. We had a Scout in our District who did just that (ie:did his project before approval. Mom forced the committee to sign the workbook. The AC asked me what to do? I talked to some other people in the council and we told the Scout, he had to do another project after going through the workbook with him, section by section.) Dancin

Eamonn, That seems like a lot of paperwork and time wasted. Just joking. That is a good idea to have the troop scribe keep all the records, but you have to admit, it's not the lazy man's way. Dancin
