When I took over as Scoutmaster I told the Troop Committee that we would be a 100% Boys Life unit. At first the Scouts would ask me why they had to take it. Then I started a quiz contest at every COH with a prize to the winner. Then they started reading it. Now the PLC uses it to help plan the year. Do the parents think it's a good investment. I've had no one complain in the last 7 years. The committee would be doing a diservice to the Scouts if they think $800.00 isn't worth it. Dancin

Try using Saddle Soap. I've used it for years. I only have to put one coat on a year. The soles of my hiking boots wear out before the leather does. Dancin PS I've also used mink oil. It works great too.

Eagle Foot, I just recently told the troop committee I'm stepping down as Scoutmaster in February 05. One of my ASM's feels that we should be planning for the Scouts and not letting them plan with our guideance and advice. We have had a couple of poor SPL's and things were a little ragged. I had talked with the youth, both the SPL's and the whole troop about them planning their program and making it work, but it just stayed ragged. The ASM thought I should replace the SPL and he and I should start planning meetings and outings for the troop. We now have a strong SPL and have planned until March. I have so much on my plate (SM for Jamboree Troop, Wood Badge, etc.) I made the decision after 8 years to resign. What he does when he takes over won't be any of my business. I don't want him to think I'm looking over his shoulder. I'm not registering with the troop. Dancin

One of my friends called me and asked me a question on the Eagle Scout presentation kit. Inside the kit there is a mothers pin, fathers tie tack the Eagle Scout device, Eagle Scout cloth badge and a gold mentor pin. Does anyone know about this. This is a new one to me. Dancin

I just finished serving as Senior Patrol Leader this last weekend and so much enjoyed the high energy level of the participants. Both weekends had great weather and the staff and patrols mixed as one solid unit. At the final assemby when I led all the patrols out of Gilwell field for the last time, it was such a emotional moment for me. I think I will remember it for the rest of my life. What a great program and what an honor to serve as a staff member. To all of

I agree with Eamonn on the visitors patch. I went in 1997 as staff and purchased a visitor's patch. When I go again in 2005, I will again purchase some visitors patches. If anyone would like to come visit, we will be in the central region, sub-camp 11, Troop 1113. Dancin

Since your troop program has been taken over by the PLC, let them decide what to do. If they prepare the program, they will buy into it. How they prepare will determine how they place in the competition. If they work the skills and such into the weekly troop meetings, and prepare themselfs well, they should do well. If they don't do well, but still did their best in preparing and in the competition, then they were successful. Dancin

I go on Wed the 18th to our Council's Wood Badge course C-03-04 that starts on 8-20. I am the Senior Patrol Leader and we have a full course of 56. I am ready for some fun! And also a new crop of critters. Dancin

He would be an Assistant Scoutmaster and the only restrictions would be that he and another under 21 year old could not take youth on a campout or he can not share a tent with a youth under the age of 18. Dancin

I agree with Acco40. I hold a COH on Friday night at Summer Camp. I purchase all the awards at the Trading Post, fill out the required forms and attach all rank, MB earned to the proper cards and present them to the Scouts. All parents are invited up during that evening if they wish. By doing this the Scouts receive their awards at the close of Summer Camp. I don't have to wait two to three months to award advancement and we achknowedge the Scouts at a formal COH in the fall. Dancin

I found this on the Great Salt Lake Council website: Less than half of the registered leaders in Cub Scout packs have completed basic training for their positions. To improve this record, the Cub Scout position of pack trainer is being introduced. The pack trainer: Qualifications: If residing in this country but not a citizen of the United States, agrees by the Scout Oath and Law, to respect and obey the laws of the United States of America, and to subscribe to the BSA statement of religious principle. Is at least 21 years of age, and is registered with BSA as a pack trainer. It is recommended that the pack trainer have at least one year of experience in a leadership position in Cub Scouting, preferably as a Cub Scout or Webelos den leader. Pack trainers should be trained at a district or council trainer development conference. The pack committee selects the pack trainer with the approval of the charter organization. For new packs and those lacking experienced leaders, an experienced leader from the district training team or another pack may be appointed as pack trainer until the new leaders gain experience. Responsibilities: The pack trainer is responsible for: Conducting orientation of new families and new pack leaders. (See Chapter 10, "Den and Pack Management," Cub Scout Leader Book.) Training each new leader and pack committee member for his or her specific position, using material provided by the BSA. Helping with Unit Leadership Enhancements during pack leaders' meetings. Conducting other training as designated by the district and or council. Encouraging pack leaders to attend ongoing training, such as roundtable, pow wow or University of Scouting, outdoor training, Youth Protection training, and Wood Badge. Remaining current with training material and program updates. Keeping track of pack training records. The goal of the pack trainer is to have 100 percent of the pack leadership trained in their position responsibilities. New leaders and adult families should receive orientation within one week of joining the pack, and leaders should receive position-specific training within 30 days.
