#24 should be Honor Medal, the Medal of Honor is a military award(This message has been edited by click23)

Quartermaster and James West. I know of four more, one Venturing, one OA and one obsolete exploring award. A hint on the fourth one is WY. Plus some cub training awards are left.(This message has been edited by click23)

wingnut, Definitely not his dads uniform. Eamonn, I have been pretty much thinking the same since I made the post,it's not my place. Sometimes I like stirring things up and what better to do that than a uniform question. Gold Winger, I don't thing more police, but more training. One of my Wood Badge ticket items is a uniform training class. It's not going to be pointing out flaws in the scouters uniforms, but more informative. For those suggesting a session at the roundtable, our roundtables don't work that way, another example of the poor commissioner service in my district.

After the conversation that we had at the camporee, it was evident that he is big into patch trading. Just based on the kid I knew in school, it would not surprise me if he was just showing off the patches he had traded for. Our scout shop will not sell any award without proper credentials, and I doubt that a scout shop would even carry that knot. They even keep them in those plastic fishing lure tray with the dividers, with everything labeled.(This message has been edited by click23)

#10-B Silver Fawn Award Same knot as the Silver Beaver "In 1969, a study was conducted by the BSA on the subject, "Awards for Women." One of the results of this study was the creation of the "Silver Fawn Medal." It was introduced in 1971 for use at the council level and was designed to be the women's equivalent of the Silver Beaver Award, which since 1931 had gone to male Scouters who had made outstanding contributions to Scouting at the local council level." from http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/silver-fawn.html

I was at our roundtable last night, and saw an ASM that was a couple of years behind me in school. I have been back active in scouts for a little over a year now, and this is only the second time I saw him, the first was a couple of weeks back at the camporee. This was the first time that I saw him in uniform, and there on his shirt were at least three rows of knots. I was looking at them as he walked by, thinking he has been busy and I'm glad his troop has him. This was a large troop when I was a kid and now is down to 4 or 5 boys. He had his youth awards, Eagle,AOL, religious, and even Explorer Gold award, which struck me as odd, but I guess they formed a post after I left. He also had a Scouter's Training Award and Scouter's Key knots. Then something jumped out at me, the knot for the George Meany Award and then I saw something that made me do a double take, a red and white knot on a tan back, I was pretty sure I knew what that was, but decided to look in my insignia guide when I got home. Sure enough, it is what I thought it was, the Silver Buffalo. I started thinking, I'm only 28 so he is 25 or so, that is very strange, and guess what, his name is not on the Silver Buffalo list. I have never said anything to a scout or scouter about their uniform that was not in one of my assigned units, I am a unit commissioner. And then it is something like, "Mike, next time you sew a patch on your shirt, you might want to turn this knot around while you are at it, the over lope goes to the wearers right." This isn't something like a patch in the wrong place or something like that, this is the highest adult award(and the George Meany Award is no small fry either), but he is not in one of my assigned units, so is it really any of my business? #3 Another rare one would be the Silver World Award, although not a square knot it goes in the same place. Red and white vertical stripes, with a blue globe centered with silver stars in it. From the info that I can find only 40-60 have been awarded http://www.scoutingbsa.com/Programs/Awards/Adult_Leader_Awards/Silver_World_Award.html(This message has been edited by click23)(This message has been edited by click23)

The insignia guide is the same, only a picture of the patch and no location info.

Down at the bottom of this page: http://www.scouting.org/pubs/33066/06I.html it shows the NYLT patch, but unfortunately it does not show the location, this is the new online insignia guide. I have a 2007 copy at the house, I will take a look tonight. RObert

youth protection training question
click23 replied to JeffD's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
It also can depend on the state law. Here in Tennessee, we have to do it every two years. -
emb021, I know better than to post something about the uniform without first checking my trusty Insignia Guide, I have no I idea where I got that about regional patches, you are 100% right. Robert
-
scoutldr, I don't have a link to the uniform guide, but here is one to a uniform inspection sheet: http://www.scouting.org/forms/34281.pdf "Badge of office is centered 4 inches below shoulder seam, but if numeral is worn, it is centered below numeral and touching it". So unless you CSP is 4 inches tall, the badge of office does not touch the CSP. Not trying to be a uniform cop, you might be in an area that this practice started long ago and now is accepted to be correct. Jamboree participants can wear the region patch for a certain period of time after the jamboree. Robert

A "District Committee" patch, it goes in the same place as the ones on your troop uniform, 4 inches from the shoulder seem. Any knots that you have earned could go on it too. Robert

jaffolder, Take a look over at this previous post of mine. http://tinyurl.com/36u5q6 It includes BS, CS and Venturing awards. Just for BS it would look like this. Eagle Scout Heroism Award Honor Medal James E. West Fellowship Award Medal of Merit Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award William T. Hornaday Medal and the badge Youth Religious Emblem Robert

eghiglie, It is not a scouting award at all, it is an award through your church. It is awarded for generous service to both the church and one or more of the scouting organizations. I would take my award certificate into the local Scout Shop, and purchase a knot. If the employees give you any grief over this have your rector speak the the shop manager or the Scout Executive. Congratulations and wear that knot with pride. david.self, The AOL is the most common CS award on a BS uniform, but there are several knots that a cub can be awarded that can be worn on the BS and even adult uniform: Heroism Award Honor Medal James E. West Fellowship Award Medal of Merit Youth Religious Emblem The AOL is worn as a patch or pin as a BS but then as a knot as an adult. Robert

Have you guys seen the new national website? http://www.scouting.org/ The "My Scouting" area looks pretty interesting.(This message has been edited by click23)

Yes, and if some day later he goes on to a Venturing Crew, he can wear it on his green venturing uniform.
-
Knots earned or awarded may be worn on any uniform. As long as the person is changing the position patch too, using the same uniform is perfectly fine. Personally, I will only wear the knots for my youth awards and the ones for the branch of scouting that I am involved in.

What courses beside Trainer Development is required? The requirments for the training award state: 1. Complete Fast Start Training for the pack committee. 2. Complete Basic Leader Training for any Cub Scouting position. 3. Complete New Leader Essentials and be familiar with and able to explain the key elements of Leader Specific Training for all volunteer positions in the pack. 4. Complete Youth Protection Training. 5. Participate in a trainer development conference for number 2 I would go with training for the pack committee, since you will be reporting to the chair, but you can take as much as you want Is there any monitoring of the Pack Trainer by the district committee? None that I am aware of, but that doesn't mean that you can't send the training chair a monthly update. Where does the Pack Trainer get the syllabus and training material? The local scout shop or you may able to borrow it from the district training committee Our District Training chair bought some of the training material herself... That's part of scouting, sometimes it is given to you other times you pay for it out of you own pocket. You might want to request a training budget be set up by the pack committee to cover your expenses. "Leadership Training Committee Guide" would be at the very top of my list of items to get.

Like others have said, let your district commissioner know what is going on and that you appreciate having a unit commissioner, you would rather someone be else assigned. I wouldn't so much push on the issue of her having a previous "job" in the pack, but that you and the CC have personal issues with her. Since this is a district representative you are having issues with, you might want to bring in your COR, if this person is active, and have them talk it over with the district commissioner if it doesn't go well with the DC the first time. Things get a little more touchy if the DC says no. First, you are under no obligation to let a UC in the door, unless you are with a LDS then it is also a church position. Just tell her that you guys are doing fine, and you will let her know when she is needed, but will keep pushing the DC for a new one. I would also let the council commissioner and the district chairman know the district commissioner was not willing to work with you. Robert

Wood Badge and a goal for work
click23 replied to click23's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Thanks, Avid Just trying to double dip, and to avoid a day out of the office for another training class, work related. Figured that would be the answer, but had to ask. Sue, this is assigned goal. One of five that counts towards a bonus. The only reason I was asking for a copy of the syllabus, would be for if it contained any sections that dealt with "time management/organizational skills", they would want proof of that I what was involved in the course, and then they might end up paying for it. If not, this is an expense that I will happily hand over. Thanks, Robert
