Who conducts the troop uniform inspections? Where will you find the answer to this question? Thanks

We have made a commitment to buy enough tents for the whole troop. If a scout wants to bring his tent on a camping trip...thats fine. I do state that if it is some type of extra large multi room grand um..pa..pa that they leave it at home and use it outside of camping with the troop. I do like to see continuity in how we set up. I also point out if you bring your own tent...if something happens to it the tropp will not be responsible for damages. That goes for if the scout has another troop member sleep with him in his personal tent. For the most part we let them do it...all have chosen not too. If we are going on a camporee or multi troop funciton...we all look alike as much as possible. I agree with you try to get them to use the troop tents and save theirs...I do try to let them get it out of their system, which usually only takes a couple of camping trips. Our scouts want to use their troop tents because they helped raise the money to buy them. Good luck

Both are very good tools. I chose the Gerber because I could use it with one hand better than the Leatherman. If I'm caught on a rope or something the like...hopefully only with my left hand...but I could reach around and pull the tool out of the pouch with either hand. I could get the tool open with one hand if I had too.

Another good reason to get training!
Abraiu replied to Bob White's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
These post are all worth their merit with good information and strong reason to get trained. How do I get leaders trained if they think they don't need it? Some have been in scouting a number of years...but that don't mean a thang...the way I see it. I really like these guys and they have a lot to contribute. I just can't make them see just how important training is. I surly don't want to have to go through something castastrofic to make a point. Any diplomatic lines to get this through? -
Thanks for your replies. Did I say a year and a half...over implied. If each patrol has six to eight scouts it should only take six to eight months as long as each one does it. As I have learned over the years it does not flow this way. Not always is one scout going to be committed to doing this requirement at each camping trip. I was looking for some different views. This Eagle was flying high looking. Thanks for the replies. Abraiu.

As the scouts in our troop advance I have 4 scouts who are second class scouts. Each needs his cooking requirement 4e for First Class. Three of the scouts are in the same patrol. The other is in a seperate patrol. Has it worked with haveing three souts as head cook for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? The only way I can see getting this requirement off is group team work as head cooks. The one scout on the other hand will be able to have an assistant, which could also serve as head cook to earn his part of the requirement 4e. We go camping every month but at one per month this process will take a year and a half if the team work idea is not used. My best answer is team work...

Our troop camps two nights...We leave on Friday night, everone is assembled at 6pm and we leave as soon as everone is assembled. All scouts are instructed to eat before or plan on bringing something to eat while in route. No Fri. night cooking only a cracker barrel. This way the scouts will have all day Sat. to do things. We usually break camp around noon depending on the drive. Vespers is at 10am on Sunday (A Scout is reverent) I always incourage the scouts to plan it this way so they can get the most of their out-door time with out being so rushed. We learn to go with the flo during winter when it is dark early. Good Luck...

Your right the committee is not required to vote. It does not state it at all in the committee guide book. Most committees should adapt something as they charter...or vote on makeing a change to vote...or even to use assistant scoutmasters as a voting member if membership is low. Most committees have a rule that they established...say a majority vote is needed to buy $2,500.00 worth of new tents. You may say a quorm of no less than four must be present to vote or 5...try to have your CC, ADVC, Trea, Sec, and Activities chairman if possible. Our parents of scouts that are(registured). We allways try to registure at least one member of the scouts family just to be on the committee just in case. We don't get everyone but there always a good 5 to 7 members on the committee when something big comes up. The main point is that the scouts run the troop and the committee supports them...making big expenses should have the support of the committee if it is real expense...or needed in most cases. If its what the scouts want then the committee should support it...as long as it follows "The Aims of Scouting" and is not in conflict with "The Guide to Safe Scouting" Good luck.

It is the "What came first? The Chicken or the Egg" or "What came first the Scoutmaster or the Committee?" In a lot of new troop start ups that sometimes is the case. The Charting organization should be informed of the BSA policy that the COR (Chartered organization Represenative)has a finial ruling and must also approve of the leadership, as the committee. The committee is responsible for locating persons of good stature, ethics, and of moral character. There is no policy reguarding the founding scoutmaster. The COR who signed the paper work (he did sign the paper work?) either did not know, they are good frieds (which is hard to make any changes) or was mis-informed about how BSA works. It might be worth a meeting with the COR to find out where they stand and just what their response would be, before trying to really change this. As Ed said you may want to inquire if the Scoutmaster is trained, Scoutmaster Fundimentals...New Leader Essentials Taining...Woodbadge...what's his back ground? Have him show where his information is coming from...this is an old problem revisited. If he still insists, contact your District Ex. As far as eliminating the scout from the troop if the scout has registured with BSA and is paid current and has not had some grivious infraction against him...he's there or free to transfere to any other troop.

We will be building gates and entrances. No towers some tripods.

We will be using a lot of 1-1.5" cal. bamboo. We will use some that is 3" cal. for post that will have the 1-1.5" cal. bamboo lashed too.
-
We are a new troop and lashing up stuff is new to us. As a boy our troop lashed everything under the sun. We used binders twine. We are hosting a camporee this fall and we need to lash a lot of Bamboo together. What type of cord should I use? I would like to use something that will not stretch. What size of cord or rope would be recommended?

Jeff troop_360 Try this one it's really good. Adjustments can be made. It's on excel, I like it because it is usable so the boys can carry it. You don't have to be Charles Atlas & the state of Alaska to move it around. Good luck Abraiu http://www.troop168.net/forms/patrolboxC.htm -
Chippewa29 Bob White is correct in that the SPL selects these members and the scoutmaster provides guideance. In my past experience we had a really large troop with a number of boys who were older. The troop had about sixty scouts and about half were first class. The SPL proposed a change to allow the troop to vote on the positions, Scribe, Buglar, Historian etc., those who wanted to run. Since more than one wanted the job. The SPL also took the process a futher by creating a seperate patrol "Staff Patrol" this was an honor patrol made up of the elected scouts into the various positions. These scouts actually seperated out of their own patrol and became the "Staff Patrol" as special patrol who's requirments were very strick. Attendance, Sprit, Uniform,Training the other scouts, and special troop responsibilities. These scouts would represent the best of the troop. It became a real honor to be part of the "Staff Patrol". This was just another way to inhance the boy run troop and the boys loved it...they were limited to two re-elections in the "Staff Patrol" as for which ever position they were elected. Elections were every six months.

As it seems or COR had gotton the wrong information. He was approched to charter another pack ....which had out grown their present location of a small church. Pack size about 80 cub scouts. The resident pack about the same size. The plans were to charter the other also. The new pack wanted a to charter because of information being given by someone who was NOT IN THE KNOW about chartering. They were speaking on behalf of the COR...thinking it was ok....WRONG! They told the other pack they could get the charter and if they had plans to start a troop that would be fine to do so there also.....WRONG! Thank for all of your input fellow scouters the mess has been put to bed...one pack...one troop. Moral...two packs in a large chartered orgazation maybe ok...Two troops takes a whole lot of support. Make sure you make it clear to other "Meaning to be helpful people" that they know the proper channels. Bobwhite...thankyou, I do have a good releationship with my COR. This is why every Scoutmaster or committee chair should have this. By the way our COR is not in the know about all of this and though it all sounded good. He is concerned with the chruch and figured the scouts could handle them selves.
-
It would make since to merge the two packs, as I said the pastor's son is in the other pack and so are a lot of other kids that go to the church. What I don't understand is how they got seperated form the pack where they go to church? Somebody has droped the ball.
-
It has come to my attention that our church may consider chartering another Boy Scout Troop. We just finished charting as a new Troop in March of this year. Our Troop has sixteen active and eighteen registured. I am concerned that if they charter another troop that not only will the new incoming scouts have to decide which troop they will want to join, but which troop will the chruch support the most? The church just charted a second Cub Scout pack because their charter location was not large enough. With the possibllity that the Cubmaster (of the new charter) will be chartering a new BSA troop as the Scoutmaster. It seems that the pastor's son is in the newly charted pack or re-located pack. How does something like this pan out over the long run. Will Troop xyz get the van when they need it and Troop ABC (the first troop) never gets it. Or the chruch gives greater support to the new Troop because the pastors son is a member and the older or first to charter troop strugles. If the church were larger and if there were noumouris amounts of boys trying to get into a troop I would not have a problem with this. Sounds like I need to get some stright up answers from my COR and DE. Could be they are not going to re-charter us next year and will go with the other. (BAS politics at work. We havent head anything up till this point. What tipped the whole matter off was the other pack was having a yard sale at our chartered church. Which is now their charted church. Our troop is gearing up for a big yard sale in the next two weeks after Mothers Day. Looks like everyone is going to be yard saled out after all of this. Who knows?

Still looking for ideas...all night about 250-325 scouts. Boy Scouts and Webelo's. Should start around 9:00pm finish around 3:00pm. Would like to finish with a camp fire...maybe. Scouts will have to ware a pack of some type (can hold supplies) may need them along the trail...unexpected challanges that may require something in their pack..........Still thinking

In my Wood Badge course we would have a time to reflect every day. We would reflect or hold silent meditation. Our Scoutmaster would have a few words to inhance our reflection with words that allowed us to see the world as it is and to remember that there is something that made everything. We held vespers on Sunday one story comes to mind...a story of choosing...which would reflect how we saw ourselves. So are religious services optional? Only if we decide that life is an option.

We have Webelos Woods and we just finished crossing the Webelos over at out Spring Camp-o-Ree. If National is saying no then our council has not heard. The Camp-o-Ree was a sucess. We've been doing this for a number of years.

Ideas for all night camp-o-ree. we did this last year it was a great sucess. The patch is a collectors hot item. we used compass to locate each station. It was know as the "Night Hike"
