  1. We had a similar situation, but not for the Treasurer position. It is for the Advancement Chair position. This lady's son became an Eagle and he moved on to military service. However she only comes to the troop meeting when we have a Board of Review. She also felt that she is the only person capable of doing the job since she had a very long experience with the troop. She was also the COR of the troop. Unfortunately, the pastor booted her out and assigned another church member. The Committee Chair slowly took the documents from her and transferred them to me. Of course there was a lot of confrontation, but it died down because she was no longer the COR of the troop. She became just a member of the committee and was not assigned a specific task. However for a Treasurer's position, he/she should be at troop meetings at least 95% of the time to receive payments and issue disbursements. It is also wise (for internal control purposes) to change Treasurer every 2 years. He/she should be required to furnish a full accounting of all funds received and disbursed. The books should be open to audit in cases of anomalies or fund mis-appropriation.
  2. Yes of course. Scouts and/or leaders should not be subjected to it.
  3. Currently working in the capacity of Accounting Manager, in charge of payables, human resource and financial statements for a nationwide family owned corporation. Manufacturer of precious metals. Prior to this job, was working as Accounting Manager for a 10 chain retail store, training and supervising the data processing staff. First job was an Auditing Examiner for the Commission on Audit, assigned to the Ministry of Education in the Philippines.
  4. Our troop meets every Monday unless there is a holiday like Memorial Day or Labor that falls on a Monday. In the summer we have regular meetings, scouts wear our Class B shirt and scout shorts (with scout's socks) or scout long pants. During the month of December we have 2 Mondays off and when we come back our meeting is usually held at the Lazertag. That is our treat for the scouts. Our PLC meeting is always the 3rd Wednesday of the month, the scouts decide on what program they will be accomplishing the following month. However our Venture crew meets once a month (2nd Wednesday) and an officer's meeting 1st Wednesday to discuss advancements and/or outings. I believe meeting on a weekly basis for the troop benefits everybody. Scouts can take full advantage of the program, it allows the scouts to catch up on advancements particularly when we have merit badge classes. The scouts are fully aware of what they have to work on. They are also aware that if they are ready to advance that the Board of Review is always on the 3rd Monday of the month, unless it falls on a holiday. The scouts make an appointment with the Scoutmaster for a conference and the following week they are prepared for the BOR. If they miss this then they need to wait for the following month.
  5. Our patrol name is the "Guidos" and we do have our own patch. the background is orange with green flames and around it is our motto "Leading by Example" We do what the scouts does, if we have a fundraising talent show, the adults participate even though some of us really do not have a talent.
  6. For regular activities, like backpacking trip, river rafting etc. our adult leaders pay for their share of the trip however sometimes we are reimbursed for gas. For summer camps since this is a week long activity, the troop normally shoulders the cost. When we prepare the budget for the summer camp, the cost of the additional adult going to camp is figured into the budget. The budget includes the cost of the camp program, patches and other incidentals and allocation for additional leaders to attend the summer camp. The logic behind this cost allocation - the leader takes a vacation to help run the summer camp. It is just fair for the leader to participate and not pay for the program, after all we are stuck with the scout for a period of 7 days. I have been to 4 summer camps and the only time I had to dole out money from my pocket was when we did not have enough scouts going and the summer camp was out of state. For ordinary trips, our leaders are willing to pay the cost of going on an outing whether it is a backpacking trip or a camping one.
  7. Hi I'm practically new to this site. I am currently an Assistant Scoutmaster, but serving in the capacity of Advancement Chair. My troop is located in Reseda, CA and we are chartered by the United Methodist Church. I have been involved in scounting since my son was a Tiger Cub. I have gone through Wood Badge training (Beaver Patrol) and sealed by OA brotherhood last year. I have been a Pack Treasurer and a Patrol Adviser. My main interest is scout advancement, religious emblems and cultural diversity. I know that I will learn a lot from this site.
