  1. And "boy axe". I have the long version too. In late 1990's they were still Plumb.
  2. And know you also know why the old timers complain “how come none of the younger volunteers stay around after they are done with their units?” Same reason.
  3. This is now very easy for key 3’s in Scoutbook. Just a few clicks. 🙂
  4. You think so? I see a number of areas where we are short of the "gold standard". Plenty of areas of alingmnet, but some key gaps. Conducts structured interviews [not required at all or even given examples of what to cover] Calls and speaks to at least 3 references [not required at all] Video surveillance technology in all spaces where adults have contact with children. [no required, not sure how we would get access] Repeat training at least annually [every 2 years] The Code of Conduct explained to children and parents and posted on the organization’s website [not explained to children] Posts victims’ rights throughout the premises, on the website, and in an employee [no victims rights spelled out] Establishes regular benchmarks and milestones for meeting prevention goals [unknown, not plublic] Considers external audits to probe for other areas of weakness in program and policies [unknown, not public]
  5. Too bad the article didn’t say if what was sold was close to what was expected. Any one have any idea? What about properties now that a couple of years have passed since the evaluations were given and real value received.
  6. The peaks have interesting demographic connections. Percentage of scout age children, boys before and all now, would help eliminate these impacts.
  7. I assume a big difference is Perdue wasn’t 1.5 years into implementation, right?
  8. Thank you for pointing that out. It caused me to go look and confirm. Yes. 😞
  9. They can? Each rank now has a knife safety adventure.
  10. Amen, amen, AMEN, aaamen! AMEN! This is the patrol method and how Scouting NEEDS to be done.
  11. I've only done the training, I never saw that part before. Very interesting and a resource the BSA should adopt. The training is required annually. It isn't too far off from the YPT. They cover an angle that isn't discussed as being a BSA issue - quid pro quo. I never thought about playing first string or getting game time at all would be used as leverage against a youth athlete.
  12. SafeSport is used for many sports, I believe. USA Archery uses them.

You make a good point. To me, it is clear that there is more meaning in a number of their statements then they let on. An example is non-OA scouts at NOAC being the norm. At least that is what it implies. They seem to be very leading statements without the conclusions.
  14. It doesn't matter if they were inflated last year. If they were inflated every year, it would allow apples to apples comparison. You wouldn't want to compare March to December between 2 years as it wouldn't be apples to apples.
  15. This could be an issue in some councils, not areound here.
  16. I think this is key. Just because the “commercial range” allows other calibers, you still have to follow the RaTS rules.

NLS “Chicago” (in Wisconsin west of Kenosha) seemed well attended by youth and adults. At least as good as the NLS I attended in 1992 in central IL. I really liked DYLC.

My wife got a good laugh last night when I said a friend I was corresponding with was the only person I knew that had the OA DSA. I said that they give out about 40 every 2 years. It used to be more like 25-30, but they have increased it. She was like “Oh! This is the org that has much smaller numbers than in the past? The ship is sinking, let’s make sure our buddies get the award before it is gone!”

See the quote below from that page. I didn’t catch what he did there at first. Can you spot the change in restatement about what is not changing? “It’s also important to note what’s not changing: we remain Scouting’s National Honor Society; fellowship, cheerfulness and service remain at the core of who we are;”

Camping was in the purpose. There is a camping requirement. Ok. Some, not all, lodges had a "where to go camping book" and some, not all, promoted summer camp. Ok. It always seemed to be a force fit.
  21. I agree others, from outside of the unit/org, can help mediate, but in the end, it is the chartering org that will prevail in any argument. That isn't to say that reasonable people should adhere to reasonable input and advice. But, if push comes to shove, the chartering org's opinion is the only one. That doesn't mean it couldn't/wouldn't destroy the unit and be counter to anyone's desires.
