A difficult challenge with special need Scout/er
mrjohns2 replied to skeptic's topic in Working with Kids
Are you thinking of this in the abstract or with a particular situation? I'm not quite following the situation. Any Scout, no matter the age (even if they are a Program or Unit participate, Scouts who have approval to continue past 18) can't put at risk other Scouts or Scouters. It would be up to their council if they can continue as Lone Scouts. Having any Lone Scouts, or a particular Lone Scout, is up to the council. -
Unit leader coverage for eagle paperwork?
mrjohns2 replied to curious_scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I’ve always seen that as a “digital only position”, but it is interesting to extended it irl as the kids say. -
Bay-Lakes Council spent a long time early in the year and couldn’t come to terms. No units will be chartered by the Green Bay diocese.

Philosophy on Camping Nights for OA Eligibility
mrjohns2 replied to InquisitiveScouter's topic in Order of the Arrow
Splendid figure? Never said I was shooting for that. Judge a little less yourself. Since he has chosen to not camp with the troop for the last 3 months, then being OA eligible wasn’t important to him. Don’t shirk the rules @InquisitiveScouter, it isn’t very obedient of you. Not everyone gets a ribbon, trophy, or sash. -
Philosophy on Camping Nights for OA Eligibility

No camping in September, October, or November? I think I see where the problem is. -
Philosophy on Camping Nights for OA Eligibility

It is only 5 campouts, which is a pretty low bar. How many have they been on? Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov? That should be 8 nights. How many days are they short? -
That must of sucked. You think you know the negatives due to “being around” and then find out it is worse than what you prepared for.

Wow. That is so crazy. I wonder how bad the two weeks were or how poorly screened the DE was. Most people could at least give a job a year.

Need advice on a difficult situation

@fred8033Very sound, well reasoned, and nuanced advice. -
Four-Digit Custom Unit Numeral - Green | BSA® (scoutshop.org) I really like the more subdued tan ones for Scouts BSA.

Wry cool, it none in in compliance with the standards. Make a troop patch for a hat or neckerchief or temporary patch.

I think the under-compensation of some SE will more likely happen. That is those in small, less well funded councils will get merged into larger orgs and this have to pay more. Also, if I was a good SE, I think I’d want more money due the risk of solvency.

Unit leader coverage for eagle paperwork?
mrjohns2 replied to curious_scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Uh, wow! Our council made a step change when we lost our very good, very overworked registrar. We then hired someone new and they left in 4 weeks (?). We now have 2 people sharing the job and can ramp up each to 100% or down. It has been a step change. Applications, paper scanned applications, for adults and Scouts, entered the next morning, in the system late in the day, fully in the system the following day. 24-48 to full entry. We are spoiled. -
Unit leader coverage for eagle paperwork?
mrjohns2 replied to curious_scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Unit Leader for a troop is the SM. It isn’t just any leader in the unit. If the SM is not available, though, I’d have the ASM or CC sign and put a note along the lines of “in lieu of the SM”. -
The salary is in the filings. Do you mean it just wasn’t talked about? Again, sad. There is enough money there with $200,000 to have at least some “at risk” based on criteria.
-
I have not been on a council board or executive committee. It is sad that it wasn’t an annual closed door discussion amongst the board. When I served on our church board for 3-4 years, it was an annual discussion. First amongst the board and then with the minister. Yes, our central church had ranges, but those were guidelines. We had full congregational control. We couldn’t hit the low end most of the time, so it was a hard spot to be in as a board. I have assumed (maybe wrongly) that this is how council boards operate. I know that churches that were on (or off) the low end had a harder time attracting ANY candidates, but NEVER the leading candidates unless they were returning to their home area to be close to elderly parents.

The council executive board are all volunteers. They don’t have a chance at the salaries. I’m not clear what you are getting at. The volunteers vote on her salaries and budget. Not the pros. Now the pros maybe lobby, but it isn’t like they choose their own pay. You could talk to your council board if you really wanted those that vote on it to hear your concerns. Or you could post here. Or both.

I don’t know if it works that way. So, you are proposing they take a $125,000 pay cut to declare they care about Scouting? You do know they don’t set their own pay, right?

Need Ideas to Keep a Troop Alive.
mrjohns2 replied to Eagle94-A1's topic in Open Discussion - Program
You are moving as the SM of one failing troop to be SM of another? -
No, that is on Part A and the site Approval (SE or designer). Both are done prior to the event. The final part, part B, only has the signature of the STCA. Source: training and forms required to be submitted before and after assessment.
