  1. My daughter is in Girl Scouts and she also earned Webelos and Arrow of Light. She told me she wants to go to my meetings and do what we do because we have more fun. How do I argue with that??? I am going to tell you what I tell people when they bring up what GSUSA does or does not do. I am not part of the GSUSA organization and I can not speak on why they don't have a more outdoor oriented program. I am unable to make GSUSA have that kind of program, and I have no way to make them allow boys join their organization. I don't know why they do what they do. I CAN provide and promote the BSA Cub Scout program to the best of my ability to whoever wants to be involved. I believe in the program and I believe that if a girl wants to camp, fish, hike, etc and the other major youth organization is not providing her that opportunity, who am I to tell her she can't? We don't have many girls in the Pack right now, but the boys don't care. When my daughter visited the Troop (Boy) last year because there was not a Troop for Girls to visit, they all accepted her and went out of their way to make her feel welcomed. And, I am in a small Texas rural town. From what I have heard and seen its not the Youth that are against girls in the program, its adults that are the block.
  2. Inaction. I am throwing around in my head if a "Scout is Kind" if I message our Den Leaders and ask then to video fogging a mirror so I can see if they are still alive. 🤬
  3. FOS already had one nail in the coffin after the price increases. Now, people possibly being out of work looks much much worse for donations.
  4. What kind of position? The person who mentioned this morning they were furloughed is a training instructor I think. My DE said they are have a conference call today and he will be calling Unit leader today to report of the "future of Scouting in the District" Sounds kind of ominous.
  5. I am seeing on Facebook this morning that employees of BSA are being furloughed. This is from a post in the DFW area, so I am not sure Council or National.
  6. As our Committee was discussing how to proceed yesterday the Council message was sent out directing us to cancel all Scouting activities until March 31. (Circle Ten) I, Cubmaster, asked Den Leaders to determine exactly what each Scout needs at this point for rank advancement and communicate that information to parents. In my Pack message when I addressed the cancellations, I also made mention of the upcoming message from Den Leaders and strongly encouraged finishing up what they can at home over the next few weeks. Today I sent out rank requirements for the Yo Yo adventure just to keep families thinking about what they can do. Don't allow them to forget about Scouts
  7. We have 27 registered Scouts, but on this particular campout I had 9 Scouts and 8 parents. All but two parents are registered leaders, but still new enough they don't know what to do. One of my WB items is going to create a Pack cookbook so hopefully adults (or Scouts) have an available source for proven recipies. A few times I looked around and the adults were sitting in their chairs AT their individual tents. They set around the fire some, but by 8:30 everyone was gone.
  8. *** This is what I had to say yesterday afternoon before someone broke the site*** 😀 Den Chiefs would be great!!! However, last weekend we were at our campsite for Beaver Day (Annual day for units to help with projects in camp, to give back). The Troop (the most active Scouts) were at the primitive site doing a Wilderness Survival Campout the same weekend, so not available to us. Dens cooking thier own meal or contributing: Its been suggested that Dens cook on their own. The breakdown this past weekend... 4 Lions with inexperienced parents. 2 Tigers, 1 Wolf and 2 Bears. 17 people in all camping and eating. Its a lot of equipment we don't have yet for few people. We have a new parent that has volunteered as Quartermaster. This was his first campout so I wasn't going to throw the burden of equipment on him yet. Next time... yep. BALOO? I am still trying to get the current batch of DLs to get specific position and hazardous weather completed. I know and I apologize.. lots of excuses. I am still learning the art of delegating jobs... I had this dream that people would see a need and step up and do what needed to be done. Just a dream. s
  9. I am a bit unsure what to do.... Last weekend was my first campout as Cubmaster. (I am still working on getting others to help, but that is another story.) I hauled all the equipment up, bought the food, etc. I cooked for the weekend and made sure there was just the right amount planned to do for the weekend. I wanted to make sure the Scouts and families (mostly new) had a good time, and it does seem like they did. As a kid we camped a lot as a family, granted it was popup camper, but we just slept in there. Breakfast to bedtime we were outside doing something. So far I have not found my way in tent camping. At home I stay up late, usually till midnight before I attempt to go to bed. On this campout everyone disappeared 8:30 or 9:00. I simply can not go to a tent and just sit for 3 - 4 hours till my normal trying to sleep time. This past weekend once again... I did fall alseep once, but I would wake up every so often and then spend 15 - 20 minutes trying to go back to sleep. Seems like about 3 am I finally stayed asleep till getting up at 6:30. 2 days of that and I am absolutely exhausted and wiped out at home. Does the possibility exist that I am in the wrong volunteer position?
  10. We have our own building. Pack meets there, Troop meets there, GS Troop meets there. Its over 3,000 square feet. There is a Cub Room, a Troop Room, a conference room in the middle, a kitchen and a restroom with two separate toilets in their own little room, one marked adults only.
  11. Breakfast: Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Hashbrows all prepared on steel griddle Dinner: Chicken Spaghetti as outlined above. Cooked on grate over coals Dessert: Peach / Apricot Cobbler in DO.
  12. It would appear the attorneys plan on going after Council resources as well regardless of their involvement, https://news.yahoo.com/boy-scouts-files-chapter-11-054911909.html
  13. Not an airflow problem Just dripping water on everything. Tents covered. Tables, coolers, stoves, everything under the main cover wet with dew, ground, etc. This camp is located on a lake, so I am not sure if that factors in.
  14. Honestly I dont know much about it. Past few campouts we have had there was a A LOT of dew. Everything soaked. How do you not get wet sleeping in a hammock?
  15. I need to do something different. I am in a Pack, so no backpacking. The Troop is not heavy backpacking either if ever so what I do now will work for awhile. I am wanting to cut down on what I have to carry to the campsite. I would like to get everything in one trip. 1) I live in Texas. 2) I don't want a mummy bag 3) I am considering making up and old fashioned bed roll with just a blanket or two 4) I have and tried a cot, but its a PITA to get to the campsite, so trying to figure out a good pad. Like I said, not backpacking but I may get a pack to carry all my stuff and if it doesnt fit it doesnt go
  16. At the Cub Scout level particularly... this is where we fully explain 2 Deep Leadership and YPT. The next part of that discussion is the handing of an application and how they can be part of that 2 Deep leadership and make sure all the Youth are safe. Don't drop and run, stay and be involved with your kid. Same thing at the Troop level. Get parents involved to be on the Committee.. sign up to be an ASM. Be involved.
  17. We did those on our family camping trips. I have too many people and not enough $$$ for cooking in the pie irons.
  18. This is something I picked up in a UoS class. I went through the tasting line twice It really is a good hot meal that is going to be filling The best part about this is... you can prepare the noodles at home so they are ready to go. Maybe most importantly, you can use canned chicken or I am going to use pulled rotissiere chicken from Sams. No raw meat in camp. The recipe calls for at least part of a can of Rotel tomatoes. I am not sure how kids are going to react to a lot of Rotel. Anyway... here is its.
  19. Right now I have my daughter. I have talked to the Council Registrar about setting up the Troop as "Coming Soon" in beascout. I have to turn in new unit paperwork for that. I think some things I am just going to have to decide and go with it. For that matter the DE told me if its under the same charter, its going to be the same number.
  20. The Troop for Girls I am working on will be the same number as the Boy Troop. I preferred it that way and the CO is good with that as it the Boy Troop Committee. Our Council wants "GT" to go before the unit number on paperwork.
  21. I use FB alot, but all of my "friends" are people I actually know. I don't friend random people and I dont accept those requests. BUT, I do have a different sense of humor and I might want to be political on occasion. Its not that I want to hide anything I do but I also dont want to feel like I can't post things just because I am a leader. Keep that separate from the Scout "business". Does that make sense?
  22. I am talking people that I know have FB accounts... board members in chamber of commerce, economic development board, city council, teachers. etc.. People in town (population less than 10,000) that, I wouldn't normally friend, but I would like to have a "professional" relationship with to promote what we are doing in town. And by "we" I mean the Pack, the Troop, the "Friends of Scouting" group. I don't want to be presumptuous, but at the same time I feel like I am the only one that want to put forth the effort to promote.
  23. I just dont want to seem too self important. Is being a Scout Leader in a community worthy of another social media account? I am Cubmaster, I am forming a new G Troop, I am a member of the Boy Troop Committee. My kid is a Bear and so I have probably at least 10 or 11 years in this.
  24. I do use Facebook quite a lot personally, and I have created a Public Page for the Troop for Girls I am forming. Question for today is... I am thinking about creating a public figure FB page for me a leader. I would like to be connected to community leaders, school officials, other leaders in the District etc that I wouldnt normally send a friend request to. People that don't necessarily need to see my stupid animal videos or Dr Who posting on FB. Just a way for me to be connected and communicate about Scouts. Thoughts?
  25. I guess everyone knows I am a Cub leader, but I am also on the Troop Committee. Anyway, at the Committee Meeting tonight the COR made the upcoming vote known to the rest of the Committee. The topic turned quickly to hypothetical what ifs and who owns what. There are a few on the Committee that I guess are unaware that the CO really owns all the "stuff", we really don't have anything. There was also talk IF our CO was on the side of not allowing gays, how would that work with the policy on gays in the BSA. Would the CO decide not to continue as our CO. The discussion went further on.... IF our CO were to split and no longer the First United Methodist Church of.... and they take on the new name whatever it might be. What does that do to the original charter? Since they are no longer the organization in the original charter do they get to keep the stuff or do we get to keep the stuff? I know its all hypothetical and it would seem like PR suicide to take the "stuff" from local youth organization, but it kept them busy for 10 - 15 minutes.
