Our camp is on a Corps of Engineers lake and so... the lake is for public use. Its not uncommon for partiers on their pontoon boats to slide by really slowly 11:30 - midnight blasting their music. They don't seem to mind some of their selections are not kid appropriate.
-
The problem was they got started at 10:30 and didnt stop. Still going at 6:00 am when I got up. I think there was one right above my tent. 😂

I have problems as it is falling asleep and staying asleep when camping. I am not really sure its me or if its an equipment issue. Meaning, I havent found what I need to get a good nights sleep yet. Anyway, last night at camp we had to listen to this ALL NIGHT!!! Joked about having it for breakfast.

Additionally, you also have to provide a drivers license once you get in the school to make sure you are even supposed to be there. Not look at the picture and say ok, but it is scanned and checked against state databases.

Chapter 11 announced - Part 2 (after the big slow)

Thats kind of my point. They dont know about WOSM, and they don't care. All they will hear is "Scouts" and then just move along. A lot of PR repair if anything continues. -

Yeah, but those outside of all this that arent already really involved dont know or care about the difference. When you go and read comments on news stories we (registered adult leaders) are thrown in the generalization of pedophiles. I fear that ship has already sailed. I am not saying its right, just that how it looks out there. -

But... After its all said and done, does the general population care about WOSM? Or is it going to be perceived as same people different name.... No thanks. How far can Scouting go if its tainted in public opinion? -

I am not sure how it is other places, but local sports are doing their signups right now. When official Scout recruiting doesnt happen till late August or September all the youth have already decided what they are going to be involved in the Spring. That doest help increase membership. -

Is the BSA Travel Agency the new way to pay the bills? You and your family can stay at Philmont, Summit, or Sea Base. Dont even have to be in Scouts. Tents, bunkhouses, hotel style rooms. https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/family-adventure-camp/ -

I am not a typical parent and I don't know the registration fee won't be shielded from the settlement. In fact I am sure they will use whatever revenue stream they can. -
Chapter 11 announced - Part 2 (after the big slow)

I kinda of skimmed that document, because I lack the patience to read too much "attorney" I did ask my wife who deals with legal documents and on occasion mediation if the BSA is just stupid or are they running out the clock. She thinks running out the clock. I don't think the BSA is stupid and I don't believe the attorneys are stupid. So, why does it seem the BSA is throwing up roadblocks at every opportunity to impede the process? Do they see no way out that BSA survives so they are just going to spend it all till Chap 7 is the only option and no one get anything? -

But this is 100% about BSA. Volunteers under the BSA program took advantage of youth in horrible deviant ways. Those volunteers failed and the youth paid the price. There is do doubt there is sexual abuse in all of our society, but that doesnt excuse the BSA in this particular matter. For now this is about the claims against BSA. -

Seatbelt? I didnt have a seat at all. They sat me in the floor. In once instance in that tiny space between the last bench seat and the rear doors in a van. And I am talking 1985. -
I see problems with YPT training and I am unsure how to solve it. 1) Its not taken seriously. Too many adults see it as something they have to do, and after they do it there are too many things they just disregard. 2) Certification of Completion is meaningless. There is nothing in place to prevent a person just sitting there and clicking next while doing something else and answering a couple of questions at the end. Even more problematic... there is nothing in place to make sure the person on the certificate is the person that actually took the training. So. How do you make sure the people that are supposed to take the training are really the ones that take the training? How do you make sure the person who completed the training is actually applying what they are supposed to have learned?

Doesnt make it any less stupid. And regardless of the decade, putting a kid on the floor and not even in a seat was irresponsible. -
Chapter 11 announced - Part 2 (after the big slow)
5thGenTexan replied to T2Eagle's topic in Issues & Politics
I pretty much trust our leaders in my town, Pack and Troop. I know everyone pretty well. That being said, once my kid leaves town to another camp someplace be it in Council or maybe somewhere else. No, I can't say even with YPT that I trust those adults. My kid won't be going anywhere that I am not there. Now... I was never sexually abused as a Scout. The few trips I did go on with the Troop were less than safe though. Since I was one of the new kids in the Troop, the adults in their infinite wisdom apparently thought it was ok I didn't have a seat in the van. On at least two trips I got to sit on the floor of the van, once of those was on the floor in that little space between the most rear row of seats and the back doors. Looking back it was stupid and irresponsible on their part. So no, you can count me as a trained leader that won't be sending my 11 or 12 year old off with the Troop without me. I don't care how much he misses out on growing and being independent with me just being there. -

I was looking at our local 4H organization last year for my son. Might be time to revisit that. I don't know... -

So, if LCs started to protect assets in 2018 they knew they were going to be included in the lawsuits. In a full 180 contradiction to the line we have all been told that they are totally separate and 100% have no danger of being part of the bankruptcy? That would look pretty sketchy. -
I think... take it for what you will. 1) National and LCs pushed the narrative so hard that this was a problem that would ONLY affect National because LCs are their own thing. They can't turn around now and say... Well, uhhh, that wasnt completely accurate. Maybe taking such a hard stance on that position wasn't a good idea. It seems like more and more that is up to the Judge and not how BSA wants it to be. 2) National and LCs put themselves in a stupid position with above and even now continue to blow sunshine where the sun doesnt typically shine. The continue pushing the narrative and/or complete silence on the matter seems kinda shady. But on the other hand, if they do open up at this point they will kill any hopes of future recruitment. 3) COs have no clue what is happening and what maybe coming their way. I think they are being kept in the dark as much as the rest of us.

When I try to talk about the lawsuit with other leaders, everyone pretty much knows BSA filed bankruptcy as a result of sex abuse claims. Sometimes they reply with a "oh yeah, I remember that happening". Sometimes they reply with yeah, but most of those claims are a really long time ago and probably were probably just making it up. Had one just the other day say it doesnt matter, people dont wait years to tell someone. That is just leaders. The general public, I am kinda talking parents of current and prospective Scouts may not even know there is any sort of legal "thingy" currently going on. No one is taking what is happening seriously. Either brushing it off as no big deal or if they believe it will end and everything will just continue as normal. Personally, even at a Council Day Camp, I don't even like my kid going to the restroom without me standing at the door waiting on him. I am not terribly trusting of anyone anymore. When the type of abuse and the number of cases becomes more commonly known its really gonna hit the fan, If you know what I mean.

If that chart of offenses goes public, I know its public record but not widely known in the mainstream media, the BSA will be toast in the court of public opinion. Just to be clear, I am not suggesting it should be hidden or not known the the public in general. Once its out there, whether or not it represent the actions of most Units active today, no one will want to send their kid to participate in anything to do with the BSA. And I am not saying they are wrong or right, just that the data in that chart put the whole of the BSA is a very bad light. I am not sure if matters if LCs are able to survive lawsuits.

Yep. Still slow here too.

@ThenNow Can you help those of us, like me, navigate what it means? Like in Texas... a person can now file up until they are 48 years old no matter when the abuse happened?? https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2019/12/04/550210.htm ETA: Where do these types of cases in BSA fall in the Texas code? https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/CR/htm/CR.12.htm
