Statement by the United Methodist Church
5thGenTexan replied to gpurlee's topic in Issues & Politics
This was posted 10 days ago. https://www.ngumc.org/newsdetail/letter-from-bishop-and-scouting-coordinator-new-united-methodist-bsa-affiliation-agreement-16533299 Part of it includes this statement, so it seems they are tired of waiting on the lawsuit to be final,. The BSA Bankruptcy plan hasn’t yet been ruled on by the court, but is expected to be later this summer. The Ad Hoc Committee and BSA believe that waiting for a court decision brings no additional benefit and that registering with the new agreement sooner gets us back to administering and growing the program sooner. -
Statement by the United Methodist Church
5thGenTexan replied to gpurlee's topic in Issues & Politics
We are going to find a new CO. Not going to be Council "owned" unit. However, we are planning on a side deal with the Methodist Church for those 4 or 5 times a year we use the sanctuary or gym. -
https://www.scouting.org/program-updates/minor-modifications-to-scouts-bsa-rank-requirements/?fbclid=IwAR3-sOchfIApQ7Q4OWI8xS_feXgxITAAea_ipJ8HlZNMVvSQgcs0BbhkIhQ Minor Modifications to Scouts BSA Rank Requirements June 24, 2022 In 2021, all outdoor-related rank advancement requirements were reviewed and realigned based on guidance from the National Outdoor Ethics and Conservation Subcommittee. These adjustments will help more effectively build a Scout’s outdoor ethics knowledge and align with the information in the Scouts BSA Handbook and Fieldbook. The requirements now build in a logical way through the ranks, with Leave No Trace (LNT) and the Outdoor Code (OC) used as references throughout. Beginning August 1, 2022, these minor modifications to the Scouts BSA requirements for the ranks of Scout through Star will take effect. Scouts may continue using the existing requirements for the rank on which they are currently working, or they may choose to use the new requirements. Scouts must use the new requirements once they advance to their next rank. On January 1, 2023, all Scouts must use only the new requirements. The specific changes are detailed below. In addition, beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge becomes required for the rank of Eagle. Finally, new videos were created to support “Personal Safety Awareness” (chapter 13) of the Scouts BSA Handbook. These can be used as an alternative to earning the Cyber Chip. The specific changes can be found here. 2022-Scouts-BSA-rank-requirements-side-by-side.pdf

I took this to summer camp. Hooked it up to the camp site water spigot. RV filter with new clean drinking water hose.

I don't want to derail the other threads... I am looking for more how it works than anything. Obviously I am not new to Scouting, but I am new to having to get a new CO. We have been chartered by the local Methodist Church for decades, so this doesnt come up often. Are there any requirements for an organization to be CO other than a willingness? We don't need a meeting place. We don't need a place to store equipment. We will need an organization to fill the role though. The group we are thinking about knows all about the Units as many of the members are with or have been involved in Scouting in the community. I just need to know what all the ducks are and get them in their rows. And fairly quickly I guess.

Major Change in Chartered Organization Relationship

Its not my intention to be snarky, but how will a council know what equipment a Unit has? Our Methodist Church CO doesn't even know what we have. -

Saw this posted on the FB today.... it was recorded, but I do not believe it has been posted yet. It’s not good for the units though. ALL of your assets have to be transferred to the local council. And you will be provided with an EIN number to create a new bank account with your councils information We have a committee member currently serving as Treasurer who also works in the Council office. They said on Tuesday night they may not be able to be Treasurer any longer as it would be a conflict of interest. That statement makes a lot more sense now. -

BSA Family Adventure Camp?
5thGenTexan replied to InquisitiveScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
School here ends the last week of May. My daughter will be a sophomore in HS and is in band, Summer band begins in the middle of July. Summer just doesn't last as long as it used to. We are planning on a trip to Disney World next summer during the limited time we have. -
BSA Family Adventure Camp?
5thGenTexan replied to InquisitiveScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My family just spent a week at summer camp together. Next summer we are doing something uhhh, different -
Honestly... I am kind of tired. I have been an adult leader for 5 years and Scouts has been a major part of our life. I have been a DL, CM, several committee positions. I am now CC for the boy troop and girl troop. My daughter is 13 and will be going into high school next year. This summer we will be doing summer camp in June and she has to show up for summer band camp in the second part of July. I have a 11 year old boy who I have to force to take care of requirements. I realized the other day that my kids are growing up FAST and the time we have left to do things while they are still kids is passing quickly. Next summer I am planning a family trip to Disney World in Florida before she has to get to band camp. Summer camp is NOT happening for us. Family is going to start to come before everything else. <shrug>

We recently had a Camporee with a "timber games" theme. Our Girl Troop was right up there with the boys throwing tomahawks, log rolling, davinci bridge building... They were not holding back. I'd post picture of their "tomahawk throwing faces" but that would be improper. Anyway... after watching our GT meeting right before the boy meetings I see no significant differences. I think co-ed troops with separate gender patrols will be the best way to go. With limited adult volunteers, meeting at the same time with the same committee would help us out A LOT. (Troop Meeting nights for me start at about 5:45 and run to 9:00 because I need to be at both meetings) Both of our Troops boys and girls have camped at District events in the same camp site, but with tents set up in their own area and kitchen setups separate. It works fine with.

He definitely needs the instructional swim.
-
Maybe what we did is wrong, I don't really know... My kid is signed up for Astronomy and Fishing. He is also going to take the Second Class uhhh class and First Class class. He is working through the requirements with the Troop. but I think, based on his personality, he will benefit from experiencing and learning the information from someone else. He needs things 2, sometime 3 times before it sinks in. Also going to take instructional swim. Then I think there is like 4 hours of whatever till lights out.

Is 2 MBs at camp ok?

I was looking at the summer camp menu last night and noticed one night the main entree Isa turkey corn dog. I'm not sure that will hold me. Probably great for a kid. I'm thinking throwing in the jet boil and something like this. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mountain-House-Beef-Stroganoff-w-Noodles-Freeze-Dried-Camping-Backpacking-Food-2-Serving-Pouch/298261838?fulfillmentIntent=In-store

Update to Scouts BSA joining requirements
5thGenTexan replied to Eagle1993's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Before I threw my hands up and stepped down as CC for the Pack (0ver stuff like this, but not limited) I had a Bear DL tell me Webelos was going to be hard because they already had adventures at the Bear level they couldn't complete in one Den Meeting. Same guy that told me it was my fault I put in as much time as I do and I shouldnt expect that from everyone. -
What did your unit do to get outdoors this past weekend?
5thGenTexan replied to ALongWalk's topic in Camping & High Adventure
This past weekend was a District Cub Family Campout... So, the boy Troop and girl Troop helped staff. Meaning, we helped run the various activities during the day. Otherwise, it was a pretty typical weekend campout. I flew a kite on Saturday,. -
Check Goodwill too. Sellers on ebay as well.
-
May not be a big deal to most people, but my kid was on bacon duty this weekend. He crossed over in March and wont hardly cook at home. We help staff a Cub Family Campout this weekend and the Boy Troop and Girl Troop were both there. I am usually helping the girls and let him go on his own with the boys. Mainly so he starts to learn to do without me always being there to help. In addition to bacon, he also scrambled eggs, and cooked two hamburgers.

So... Is "In the Fifth" grade when the last day of 4th grade is held. Or is it after the summer for the first day they actually attend 5th grade classes. -
They are $15 now.
-
I just checked the scout shop online.... Handbooks for Cubs are $23.99 x 4. Scouts BSA book is $25 and MBs are $3.59 each now. I didn't check anything else.

When I got my DL award the CM couldnt get it together and kept saying the Council office lost it among other excuses. I finally took it down and turned it in and explained why there was no CM signature. Said he didnt care, just give it to me. It showed up not long after that.
