@walk in the woods Have your DE watch this video. Just a few minutes in Anthony Berger states that the min number of girls is no longer a requirement.
-
Odd. That was an early adopter rule. I don’t believe that continues going forward.
-
There should be no minimum going forward unless you are starting a new unit. Min number for new unit (of any gender) is 5.

Final pack meeting of the year was held and out early adopter status is coming to a close. It was a fun pack meeting and the addition of girls is starting to become old news. Starting in 3 weeks the program is mainstream. We have started a parent survey about our Pack year. We didn’t specifically ask about girls (as we are only asking questions that we can and are willing to change). That said we did ask an open question about how this year went overall. Feedback is the typical mix of compliments and complaints... not one negative mention of girls in our Pack. That doesn’t mean those opinions don’t exist, only that other topics are really the primary interest of our parents. Based on what I have seen the changes had no negative impact at the Cub Scout level. I’m concerned about next year given the number of additional leaders I’ll need to find but we will manage.

From National Annual Meeting: OA Eligibility Updates
Eagle1993 replied to mashmaster's topic in Order of the Arrow
I have heard rumors of this change for several months and was wondering how they would handle the rank requirements. Girls will be in OA next year, so I’m curious how the lodges will adjust. Perhaps this can breath some new life in dormant ones but I’m curious how the vibrant ones will react. -

@RememberSchiff Yes. There are Facebook comments from several scouters indicating the new Commissioner is female and one stated that she is Ellie. -
National Annual Meeting 2018 - May 23-25, Dallas

Just saw rumor that we will have a new National Commissioner and new President. Our current National Commissioner is LDS and will step down. Unconfirmed rumor (the best type of rumor for scouter.com) is that Ellie Morrison will be the new Commissioner. Supposedly to be announced Thursday. -
My DE has always been available and helpful. He must put in 70-80 hours a week. He attends several Pack meetings a year, our annual planning meeting and gives guidance from Pack planning to various ceremonies. Yes we discuss FOS... but it’s respectful. We could definitely use some more District vouchers but my larger gripe is with council. They put on very few events and seem remote and only there to add bureaucracy. Perhaps I just don’t see their contributions. Also Note that not all executives have that 6 figure salary that is referenced.

Agreed on the cost. We, the pack, hand down neckerchiefs den by den. The pack buys extras when needed but for the most part we already have enough inventory. We don’t use hats or worry about specific belt buckles. We use jeans for pants as the Cubscout pants are made for giants. When our dens advance we perform a neckerchief ceremony... which is pretty simple. Our Tigers take off their necker and place it on the Lions... and that continues. So far we are sticking with the yellow wolf neckerchiefs but we will probably change this fall when Lions have yellow neckerchiefs.
-
Issue is with large packs. I have 80 Scouts and would like to direct them to their den line for various reasons. Neckerchief color is a great way to quickly and easily see a “lost” scout.
-
And I agree that they should change the neckerchief to red to match the traditional/current color of the patch. Today is confusing for some parents ... I have had some question the yellow neckerchief color. I was never a fan of the Wolf mix of colors (yellow hat/necker but red patch). Today we have Lions Yellow Patch, No Necker Tigers Orange Patch, Orange Necker Wolves Red Patch, Yellow Necker Bears Blue Patch, Blue Necker Webelos Tan/Blue Patch, Plaid Necker w/Webelos Logo Future we will have: Lions Yellow Patch, Yellow Necker Tigers Orange Patch, Orange Necker Wolves Red Patch, Red Necker Bears Blue Patch, Blue Necker Webelos Tan Patch, Plaid Necker w/Webelos Logo Seems to make sense. Understand that transitions will take time and we should allow those to use up their old uniforms/patches. That said, having patches, hat, necker & book colors align makes those aspects of the program easier to communicate to families new to BSA. This isn't life or death or really that critical, but I can completely see where National is coming from with this change.

Wolf patch has been red as far back as I can remember. It was always confusing why each patch color matched the neckerchief except Wolf (and perhaps Webelos). With introduction of Lions the change makes sense.

Female Leader Requirements for Family Cub Scouting
Eagle1993 replied to Pale Horse's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Congrats. Councils are definitely excited about this change. @hawkins and I also are leaders at early adopter Packs.... so there are a few of us in the Scouter.com waters 😀 To summarize this thread. There is an early adopter FB page and the National Director for Cub Scouts released a video that mentioned any Pack that adds girls must have a female Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster AND every girls den must have a female ADL or DL. Both are changes to requirements from the Early Adopter program (which is fine). Outside of the video the official Cub Scout material/rules have only mentioned the DL/ADL requirement. It appears G2SS was updated and that may point to having ACM/CM female lead requirement or that may be covered by the DL/ADL requirement. I’m still waiting to hear official word. My Pack ends up following both of these “requirements” but I’m definitely not a fan of a requirement on the CM/ACM. It’s tough enough to find good leaders let alone adding gender requirements (especially female as the majority of our volunteers are male). Also frustrated that rules are not clear (if ACM/CM requirement is real) < 1 month away from full go live. -
Female Leader Requirements for Family Cub Scouting
Eagle1993 replied to Pale Horse's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Is this new language or was this from the Venturing requirement? I’m not sure if this means ADL/DL is sufficient or if we also need female CM/ACM. I’ll want to see that written specifically if required. -
I wish there was a groan voting button. You would have earned your share today. 😀

Scout BSA Uniform Survey (Girls)
Eagle1993 replied to Eagle1993's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I can confirm (on topic and banning of those who share info they don’t want shared). Next week is the National Meeting. I expect/hope official announcements come out then. -
I think the only “hard” cut overs are the books that hit in early June and the Scouts BSA uniform late this year. Otherwise, completely agree there will be a long phase in.

Female Leader Requirements for Family Cub Scouting
Eagle1993 replied to Pale Horse's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I’m a member of this FB group and that video did cause a stir. That said the female CM/ACM was never listed as a requirement in any official document. Since the video release there was no further confirmation that this is an actual rule that will be implemented. I’m hopeful that the response from the early adopter group will prevent this rule from going into force. We are all breathlessly waiting to see what is announced next week. -

Fort Worth Catholic Bishop endorses Troops of St. George
Eagle1993 replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
The question isn’t conservative/liberal. There are plenty of youth in any segment of population to sustain BSA. The question is what is missing in youth development today that scouting can help solve. In general: Rich kids are rushed around to various sports, music, language, STEM and other structured activities..led by adults. Poor kids have less structured activities but more experience of youth led/created play. Scouting can bridge this gap. It can provide overly structured wealthy youth the chance to lead and get outdoors (less adult structure than they typically see). It provides poorer youth some structure and exposure to various skills and adult mentorship. I believe BSA is trying to do too much (STEM, learning for life, etc) and should get back to a clear mission, help units easily follow that mission and advertise that mission and its impact. I know this is simplified but these other scouting organizations are not the issue BSA should focus on. -

There is roughly 60M youth in scouting age in USA. All scouting combine probably has 4M youth? I would be more interested in seeing why 56M youth are not in scouting vs worry about the 0.03M in Trails Life or few thousand in all of the other various scouting organizations. -
Rowe is right in some ways. G2SS should be written to actually prevent serious injuries and not to lower insurance rates. My 9 YO son went to a non BSA camp and used power tools. He went on a raft that he and other kids built... on a river. They were in life vests but I’m sure not all would pass the BSA swim test I’m sure it was overloaded, it broke they all fell in and they had a blast. Adults were present and had the situation under control. He probably got a few bumps and bruises but no issues. He asked if we can do this with our Pack...
