What is the difference in'boys being boys' and hazing?
bt01 replied to SharonNC's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I would talk to the two boys and tell them what they did was wrong. I hate to say it but "we" are in a differnt world today. What we might thing is a joke the other person might not. When it comes to joking around(for me), there is a small group that I do it with. Because we know each other and our friendship is older than dirt. When it comes to hazing, no one is going to agree on it. The line on hazing that I use is: Will I do this to myself. BT -

As a "former" staff member of Camp Buckskin(CRSR), tell your son that you missed him. Then send him to the shower. -
Can an aldult leader wear patchs they earned as a youth?? As long as as it is not a leadership patch or rank. From what I understand you can where the OA flap patch, as long as your a paying member of the oa lodge.

It sounds like you are dealing with the problem. I am going to add some of my ideas. At the next troop meeting, disscuss with the scouts the proper way to use knives. Stress to the scouts theat knives should not be used as weapons. At the same time till them when using any sharp object that there in son fooling around. BT

I am doing this just to keep the "older" boys in Scouting. BT

The OA (Order of the Arrow) is a boy scout program. I do not know if you can be elected into it if you are part of venturing. There are several requirements to become a member.

Bob White You wrote " By qualified leadership I mean that if you are going to have a patrol focusing on high adventure you need an adult familiar with some of the skills, safety and area resources available to make the program happen." Yes. BT

The Venture Crew is not part of the troop. They are there own unit. They have there own leadership, Adult volunteers, ect. ect., ect.. The crew are coed. Here is a list of some themes that the crew are involved in: General Interest Shooting Sports High Adventure Drama/Theater Sea Scouting Environmental Sciences. The ages are 14 to 20.If the crew is coed , so are the advisers.

If you can not find it on the web, try the local Scout Service Center. BT

Bob White, What do you mean by qualified ASM to oversee the patrol? If you mean if the ASM has Scoutmaster Fundamentals and Wood badge, then I can have my title changed. If they do hiking/camping (Pipe dream), I believe I am qualified. I have a list of things that I have done and helped other people do but that is a different subject.

Brian Why do I need the committee approval???? First, the scouts in this troop are not going to think about. They the scouts like some of the adults (scoutmasters) in this troop will not try this program. I gave handouts about this program from the scout service center and national and this was the first time they heard about it. Since this is in the planning stage, the program is going to be open. Since the troop really is not a camping /hiking Troop it may be something other than that. I started this week so it could be talked up with the scouts. If it flies, then we have a program,.

You are right about the venture patrol being around for years and going through servail name changes. I am going to show my age, I was in a Leadership Corp in a Troop in Pelham, NY. I not going to bring this up with the name changes if I have to. One of the goals is keeping the older kids active. I have brought it up with the Troop Committee, and it is going to take some work. My first impressions are that they do not what to do it. All of them have had there sons in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts but never heard about the Venture Patrol. There concern was what the program was going to be. My reply that the scouts are going to run this patrol and as the committee we are going to support it.

Bob White, I did not confuse the terms , I went to the troop committie to discuss forming a Venture Patrol to keep the "older" boys active. The troop is having problems in keeping the older boys active in the troop. I would not go to them to discusss forming a Venture Crew. BT
