Endurance, Ernest Shackleton’s ship, FOUND!
ALongWalk replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Camping & High Adventure
The crew’s survival is an incredible story. After they left the ship they made it to an island with very little protection from the elements or food. Shackleton and another crew member took a dingy to St George’s Island, climbed over a mountain, and hiked to a port to get folks to go back and rescue the crew. -
RIP young man. Thank you for your lifetime of service.

The listing are in the the classified section of the local business journal. It is a journal that comes out weekly….I think most metro’s have a version of it. Would rather not list the state but will say it is in the southeast.

Thank you. I appreciate your advice on this!

Looking for thoughts from this group - I am involved in leadership at the district level in my council, especially in FOS. Over the last few weeks I have been seeing more and more listings for lawsuits against the local council and what I assume are chartered partners. I assume this is in regards to the sexual abuse claims. Here is what I am wondering - Is it reasonable for local leaders to get some kind of explanation about these lawsuits? What if I am talking to a potential donor and they ask me about it? Maybe the right answer is that the council can’t talk about it because it is being sued. I would guess unit leaders would like to have something to tell parents or their CO also. Thanks.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of where the BSA bankruptcy proceedings stand at this time? I try to follow on the other threads but get lost in the legalese and tangents.

Chapter 11 Announced - Part 6 - Plan 5.0/TCC Plan TBD
ALongWalk replied to CynicalScouter's topic in Issues & Politics
So Michigan Crossroads has a ton of claims and get’s hit with among the smallest amount per and, others like my council (we have our share of claims also but nothing like MC), get hit so much harder. I guess it for the greater good. We are in a pretty healthy financial situation and a property that we really don’t need so that is probably the reason. -
Chapter 11 Announced - Part 6 - Plan 5.0/TCC Plan TBD

My council is getting hit pretty hard. I thought I was under the impression that we didn’t have as many claims….relatively speaking. Going to be interesting. -
It sounds/looks like Hurricane Ida is hitting Louisiana hard. Prayers for all in its path. Be safe! I hope our country is ready and able to help quickly.

OP, all you seem to do in your post is focus on the issues/things that you don’t like. Why not focus on the things you like about Scouting? Also, you ask why you should have to accept certain beliefs and lifestyles. Why should a majority of the world have to accept your worldview?

Outside the Box Eagle Project Plan Rejected at District
ALongWalk replied to Tatung42's topic in Issues & Politics
Did the leader state why he didn’t think that the project was appropriate? I guess the “benefit” question is the sticking point. Was it a hard “no” or did he leave some room for adjustment? It seems like a neat project idea to me. -
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts suffer huge declines in membership

Yep, 100% agree. Get the kids in the outdoors and the other things (leadership development, etc.) will happen anyway. -
Chapter 11 Announced - Part 4 Revised Plan
ALongWalk replied to Eagle1993's topic in Issues & Politics
Will be interested to hear what my LC will do. I suspect I know because I am pretty sure there is a camp they have wanted to sell anyway. That will upset a few folks but nothing like if the main camp was sold. -
Do you really think the US Constitution protects you from the BSA saying you can’t design a patch with its logo as part of it?
-
Then you have been defending something you don’t understand. The Bill of Rights protects you/us from the government infringing on our government from infringing on our inalienable rights. Please stop communicating differently because it is not helpful….especially during these trying times in our country.
-
“ Now, they really do have patch sensors who arbitrarily approve or reject designs that are created by local artists. Well, if that isn't infringing on the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, I don't know what else is. “ First, I am sorry that you are choosing the leave. It is the current and future Scouts in your area that will suffer because of it. Second, I am not sure what the the issue is with patches but an organization excerpting control over things that reflect on its brand has nothing to do with your “freedom of speech and freedom of expression”. If you don’t like the BSA’s stance on something then you are beyond free to spend your time and resources doing something else…which it looks like you have done. But before you go about trashing the Bill of Rights try to learn about it before you spread more disinformation.

I didn’t write my post very well. I agree with you. I guess what I am trying to say is that raising funds for FOS should not be the focus. Doing what they can do to help unit leaders provide best program possible is what they should be doing.
-
I don’t know the answer on how to get there but somehow the focus of field staff has to get away from fundraising to program. DE’s and FD’s should be intently focused on program but they are more focused on finance….again, I don’t know how to get there but I really believe that is the ultimate answer.

Eagle Scout, Gold Award, Debate Team.....and more. I don’t know what Scouting is going to look like on the other side of the BK but I so hope that it will be able to thrive so that kids can experience everything from troop camp outs to the heights of leadership opportunities.

Chapter 11 announced - Part 3 - BSA's Toggle Plan
ALongWalk replied to Eagle1993's topic in Issues & Politics
I am busy raising money for the council right now. Not hearing much from the folks/businesses I call on about the issues but....it occurs to me that I am just asking for funds that are going to ultimately not help local scouting. -

The story of Bugler Boy James Gillies (NC)
ALongWalk replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My son’s Eagle Scout project honored former slaves that lived where we live now. Unfortunately, that is not viewed as a worthwhile aspiration for too many in our community so I tried to help him understand the blowback he might receive. He didn’t give a flip about what those folks might do or say as a result of his project. That’s pretty brave in my book. Bravery is not just about imminent physical danger. BTW, he didn’t get much negative feedback.- 18 replies
