How many freebie meeting visits?
Eagle94-A1 replied to Momleader's topic in Open Discussion - Program
You need to make sure the paperwork is completed. Not only for youth, but also adults. My wife put in 3 or 4 applications to be a Webelos ADL. Did YPT, had a uniform, etc. There was an incident on one of the "Go See Its," and she ended up in the lake, pulling a guy out, and beginning CPR. Long story short, while filling out the paperwork for the Heroism Award, we discovered she was not registered. Regarding someone not being on the charter, had something like that happen to one of my Scouts. It affected him when he went to apply for Eagle. -
I said it when the new YPT rules came out, and I will say it again, the new rules have killed the Patrol Method.

ABOUT BLOODY TIME! 😃 This is one requirement change I agree with.

I just wish they would include him in Scouting Heritage MB. IMHO me had a heck of a lot more influence on Scouting than Phillips and some others. Pluse he saved Scouting. I just hope that a bio is written the info is correct. If the WB history has the error that he was the 1st CD for WB in the US at Schiff, instead of being a "Dogbody" or SPL, they may be problems.

Health forms or no trips. Seriously it is a health and safety issue. I've been on a camp out where the binder with the forms did not come with us by accident. The SM was the only one with access, and he didn't go. Just happened that I had to take a Scout to the immediate care. Luckily it was a local camp out, and we met mom there. Never again. As for disposing of out of date forms, I have access to a shredbox at work.

Since we are telling sea stories 😁 Of the ASMs who got me interested in Sea Scouts was a Quartermaster. His Sea Scout Ship was at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek , VA and needed a vessel. Somehow, they got a hold of a WWII PT boat IF they could get it seaworthy and USCG approved. Oh and they had to pick it up in Maine. The Sea Scouts, without any adults taking along, went up to Maine, spent 3 weeks repairing her and getting her USCG approved. Then they spent a week or two cruising down the eastern seaboard from Maine to Little Creek, VA. His stories got me interested in Sea Scouts.

Yes, quite aware. I was an Ordinary Sea Scout. Mixed. My ship was not a traditional ship. While I learned a lot and had some fun, It did not meet my expectations. Sadly they were the only ship within 50 miles of where I lived. If I had known how good the next ship over was, I would have driven the 2 hours round trip for their meetings ( usually 4-5 hours on a Saturday every two weeks. Sailing of course) Their ship had the first Quartermasters in my council in a number of years, and a National Boatswain came out of that ship. Yes. Growing up, Somewhat. We had Scout Shows, and the Sea Scouts there would gravitate towards my troops event. We had two pioneering towers connected with a Boatswain's Chair to create a ride, Closest the Cub Scout pack did was when I would wear my old Sea Explorer/Scout uniforms when we stayed aboard the USS YORKTOWN. Since 1912! Older than the OA.

Actually I read somewhere that National predicted a 2% increase in Cub Scouts in 2018 with the addition of girls.

SM Preventing 1st-Years From Being On Ballot
Eagle94-A1 replied to FGarvin's topic in Order of the Arrow
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED IN MY OLD TROOP! (emphasis, not shouting) SM and several ASMs tried to work with the "squeaky wheel parents." Each compromise of the standards emboldened those parents more and more until all standards DID go away. The Scouts complaining as well as me and several other Scouters complaining did no good to change the situation. Only with my sons and I leaving did things change. More likely because it almost set off a stampede of the dissatisfied Scouts. -
These packs remind me of the school backpacks of the late 70s early 80s. Closest I've had to these is a canvas European Rucksack and a canvas Yucca Ranger. Both packs had the straps bust on them. I use a medium A.L.I.C.E. pack for my canoeing and sailing adventures. Cheap, almost indestructible ( "If it is designed to survive combat, it may survive Boy Scouts."), attaches to thwarts easily, and can use it for backpacking by attaching it to a frame. The A.L.I.C.E. pack was purchased used in 1988/89 and is still going. One repair, the flap pocket was redone, and updated the shoulder straps (still have the original ones as a backup still.

Girls in Scouts BSA in the News (and in recruiting numbers)...
Eagle94-A1 replied to mrkstvns's topic in Issues & Politics
I gotta admit, I liked the June 2015 - December 2016 Webelos program. Maybe it was just the 2 DLs my middle son's den had, I did train both of them . They had an active outdoor program that fully prepared them for Boy Scouts. The Crossed Over January 2nd 2017, and currently all the Scouts are still involved in troops 26 months later. Youngest used the December 2016 to current Webelos Program. He was OK with it, but after dealing with his brothers at home, well he was chomping at the bit to become a Scouts BSA member. The real key in my opinion is HOW THE WEBELOS PROGRAM IS RUN BY THE DEN LEADERS! (emphasis). I already mentioned how one pack is not beginning the transition until 5th grade. Those Scouts, and especially the parents, are not ready for Scouts BSA. -
SM Preventing 1st-Years From Being On Ballot
Eagle94-A1 replied to FGarvin's topic in Order of the Arrow
Where to begin. I have seen challenges over the years regarding OA. I have seen it as the "best of the best" with strict voting guidelines, and it was common for folks to get in on their second, third, and in one instance 4th, year. Nowadays it seems as if folks expect OA membership automatically upon reaching First Class, and everyone on te ballot getting in Heck I had a SM ticked off at me and the OA election team because we gave the eligible candidates the option to withdraw their name, and several did. He was furious. So it appears attitudes have changed about the OA over the years, yet the eligibility process still requires the SM's approval. My thought is eligibility for the ballot should not be automatic and that the SM's approval is vital. He knows the Scouts best. If he does not believe a Scout is not ready, he has an obligation to the OA not to approve the Scout. And if there are concerns, the Scout needs to talk to the SM., not the parents. I do not know what is harder, talking to a Scout about why he was not placed on a ballot, or talking to a Scout who was on the ballot, and finds out at the Call Out Ceremony he didn't get in. I've had to do both over the years. The OA is suppose to be an Honor Society, and the obligation an Arrowman takes a heavy one. sadly I see too many "Sash and Dashes" these days. The Scout in question needs to talk to his SM, not the parent. -
In the pack I came out of, We got an AOL patch, mom's pin, and the OA chief congratulated us and shook our hands. First time I encountered the OA and boy did it make an impression. My sons' pack gave the patch, mom's pin, and plaques. It seems as if each year the leaders are trying to outdo the previous years. My youngest has a huge plaque! Hate to see how much it was. Sadly that happened with my old troop, except it was custom neckers. Gave out nine of them one year. Some never made it to the first meeting, and others quit within months. The troop decided to go old school and invest them with the neckerchief and slide when they earned Scout rank. It has saved some $. One year 2/3 never showed up to the first meeting. This past year, out of 4 that were suppose to be crossing over, only 1 came to the first meeting afterwards. 2 decided to join other troops, and 1 is MIA.

WOW. Sorry you are having to go through this. A few things though. 1 Who signed the "Signature of chartered organization head or representative" block? If the COR or IH didn't sign, then that may be a legal issue (Fraud or forgery) 2. Was the "My COR sent a letter to the council head stating we Did not want this person registered in our unit, and giving reasons, with his violations." sent via certified mail or electronically? If certified mail, do you have a statement they received it? If electronically, do you have a copy of it, and a reply they received it? Hopefully you have some type of documentation that they received the letter. I ask these questions because the only person who can overrule the COR is the IH. If they approved the application, then the IH will need to send the letter. BUT nevertheless, this is something the COR needs to contact the Field Director, who is your DE's boss, the Director of Field Service, usually the #2 person in the council, or go directly to the Scout Executive. As a COR, he is part of both the district and council committees, and should be able to have access to these people. For a council to go against the wishes of a COR, UNLESS THE IH DISAGREES WITH THE COR (emphasis. and I have seen it happen 1 time), is highly unusual. Something doesn't smell right.
-
CAN. NOT. EMPHASIZE.ENOUGH! One of my Eagles waited 2 months after the paperwork was turned in, and heard nothing. I called the council for one matter, and then asked about my Eagle. They said they never received the completed application. Thankfully he had a copy.

Troop ______ did their first Arrow of Light Ceremony last night for my youngest son's pack. Like your pack, everyone loved it. The entire ceremony was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. On a different note, I NO LONGER HAVE ANY CUB SCOUTS! Now whenever he asks me a question, I get to say, "Go ask your patrol leader."

I agree. I am just glad that National decided to make the go live date October 1st, and not the initial "Effective immediately" when it was announced in February. I know as a 18-20 year old ASM, I was the only adult able to saty the entire week of summer camp, and other adults would rotate in and out. Also know of one Philmont Crew where the 2nd Adult was in the 18-20 year old bracket. It would have seriously screwed up last summer.

How old is the video? It may not be updated yet.

Forgot to add, $7.00 per person.

The pack that my family will soon depart has done it a variety of ways over the past 10 years we've been with them. Some years there was no cost as it was potluck style with everyone bringing dishes an desserts. Over time, it has moved to catered. First the Cubs and leaders were free. Then all adults and siblings. Now everyone pays. At first it was cost of the meal. But something caused the pack to lose money. As a result, it is now a "fundraiser" with tickets being sold to the community and pack. Turning it into a fundraiser left an especially bitter taste in some folks mouths, particularly the Webelos 2 families. Some families boycotted the meal, and just showed up for the awards.

Youth Protection Policy Does Not Prohibit Retaliation
Eagle94-A1 replied to PARENTinSCOUT's topic in Council Relations
DE couldn't do it, but the Scout Executive can. And I can tell you in my experience, SEs will avoid getting involved in unit matters . Regarding this link: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/controller/BSA_Whistle_Blower_Policy.pdf Looks like it is for professionals. Do not know if the BSA really feels this way or if this is CYA, But I can tell you prior to 2013 when the document was created, whistleblowers were indeed retaliated against. they did it subtly. One guy I know was "promoted" to Scout Executive. Yep he went from being a DFS with 2 FDs, 1 DD, and 8 DEs under him to a Scout Exec with 1 FD and 4 DEs underneath him. Another whistleblower was "promoted" from DE to DD. The DE position that was suppose to report to him was vacant, so he had deal with that vacancy. And in addition to the assigned council duties, he also got the vacancy's council events AND the finance director's, who was fired, duties. He stayed long enough for his kid to be born, and then left as soon as he could. -
In NC I've seen schools use the teacher work days as school days instead. Also some holidays have been cancelled to make up. And they have had Saturday make ups too. The Saturday in school affected the council one year as we had the district committee training workshop scheduled at a school that day.

This thread is not only making me hungry, but reminded me of a fundraiser my OA chapter in Gonzales did. We were rebuilding the OA chapter from scratch, and needed funds. So we decided to do an Indian Lore Merit Badge Clinic as a fundraiser. Were going to make a few dollars to but stuff we need, have the Scouts makes stuff that they could keep, and use when they got in the OA, and really promote the new chapter. Lunch was included. Guy heading up lunch was locally known for his jambalaya, and let me tell you, especially since the Wife isn't around and can't read this post, HE MAKES THE BEST JAMBALAYA! However, we had a slight problem. He went over budget of ingredients. His recipe was the one he uses in competitions, and we had way too much We were only going to make about $10-$15 once we reimbursed him. But it was good, we figured out we had enough to send leftover to all the participants and staff. While we wanted to make money, it was more important that folks got pumped up about the OA. Plus did I mention HE MAKES THE BEST JAMBALAYA EVER? 😁 Now the clinic was at the same location as a regional pistol competition, with the winners qualifying for the national competition. Very big deal. Apparently our cook was causing problems with the shooters as they could smell his jambalaya and getting really hungry. When their lunch period started, the shooters made a beeline to him wanting to know how much. So we sold jambalaya plates to them. Not only did we recoup the extra money spent on food, we actually made more money selling jambalaya than we did on the Indian Lore clinic.

Born in New Orleans. Raised in "Metry" as folks call the suburb Metairie. But I lived in Gonzales for about 3 years. Gonzales makes more Jambalaya than anywhere else. Now that we can agree upon. :) Although I can tell you having a chef or 3 in the family, I ate pretty well, especially during the holidays. ;) Had this conversation with the chef at work. He was stationed in New Orleans, and knows you don't put okra in Jambalaya. But the recipe he has to use includes it. Probably written by someone who has never been to Louisiana. Could be worse, I guess. Could be Disney's Gumbo Recipe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSbqPzRLPY0

Merit Badges must be earned in groups of 2?
Eagle94-A1 replied to iguanita's topic in Advancement Resources
Thank you. 2 adults over 21. Parent is ok only for MB couseling. One more question, what if the MBC is 18 - 20 years old, will 2 adults over 21 still be needed?
