  1. Some of the studies I've read say about 6 months.
  2. Depends upon the unit in my neck of the woods. The "High Speed, Low Drag" aka "One and Done" units, I see a few under 15. These are adult run, advancement driven units. And once they earn Eagle, they are gone. Old school units tend to be older 16-18 years old. Their focus is not advancement, but to provide opportunities for advancement. Mostly youth run, and their Eagles tend to remain either as youth, or ASMs until they leave for college, the military, careers, etc. My 17 year old is still in until he leaves for college in the fall. Our newest, who just turned 18, is our newest ASM, and will be active until he also leaves for college in the fall.
  3. Yes, it was the premier training, and to be invited was indeed a BIG deal. Heck I received an invitation to attend, and I was flabbergasted to be invited. Sad but true. I do not know about the Cub Scout Trainer Woodbadge, but for Boy Scout WB, you had to have completed basic training, and have 2 years tenure. Now I have seen folks who have less than a year in, and have not completed their basic training yet, go to it. Yes, some folks do indeed go overboard. And some think if you have not done WB, you don't know squat. So true. I remember some of the ticket items my older friends did back in the day. They were major activities, and you had a little longer to complete them. Then I hear about some of the tickets today, and can see the decline. One ticket I vividly remember is Someone promoting WB at RT. Yes that was a ticket item of his. Some of the best Scouters I know have either never taken WB, or never completed their ticket. Best Beading ceremony I saw was at an OA event. Diehard Arrowman completed WB and wanted it done at a lodge event. Less 5 minutes, if that. Axe in Log, Notification he completed WB, received necker, woggle, beads, and certificate presented. He thanked all the Arrowman who helped him and was done. Short, sweet, and tyo the point.
  4. Depends upon the Scout Exec. I know of one long time volunteer who was passed over for the Silver Beaver because of lack of FOS contributions by several SEs. Finally we got a decent SE, and his name sailed through. In fact the committee that selected him thought he had it already since he has been a force of Scouting in the council for over 50 year by the time he received it. And one of those on the committee worked with him as his CIT for two summers.
  5. This quote concerns me: I am concerned because if folks are allowed to not answer questions, and remain part of the lawsuit, then there is no way to verify the false claims from the real ones.
  6. My Thoughts. 1. Plan it far enough in advance and promote the heck out of it so that conflicts do not arise. 1a If in SE Louisiana, and a few other places, DO NOT SCHEDULE YOUR DISTRICT BANQUET DURING CARNIVAL!!!!!!!! Yes I had a DE from outside of the area adamant that the district banquet would be in March. It was the weekend before Mardi Gras, and most folks were involved in the parades, so hardly anyone attended, or so I was told since I too was with my family at the parades. 2. Focus on the Scouts. When my district had banquets (don't ask, our former DE put a stop to them because they "costed money"), al the Eagles were invited and recognized. On occasion a few Cub Scouts would be recognized. Sadly no Sea Scout Quartermasters or Venturing Silver/ Summer recipients in my district. 2a. Inform and promote the heck out of the event with the families. 3. Focus on FELLOWSHIP. make it fun. 4. Use local awards so more folks are recognized for what they do. 4a CAVEAT: use KISS Keep It Short and Simple. 5. If you have a guest speaker, make sure they are interesting and can keep a timelimit.
  7. DO. NOT. GO. THERE. One lodge I was in was scheduled to host conclave, which involves a lot of camp improvements and maintenance. Lodge had been saving up for several years to pay for the camp improvements due to conclave. Since the lodge's money was held by the Council, and the SE can decide what he wants to do with the money, he took the money scheduled for conclave and included it in the lodge's FOS donation. Long story short, no one knew this until the bills started showing up, and the council refused to pay. SE was heard saying " Lodges support the council, not the other way around." I do not know how the matter was resolved, but the lodge advisor eventually stepped over the matter.
  8. Can you point me to where I can find the MEMBERSHIP SUMMARIES, and not the, for lack of a better term, GENERAL POPULATION SUMMARIES (caps for emphasis, not shouting)? When I searched for the results and/or summaries, I could not find a thing on the membership surveys. However I was kept finding the results from national polls BSA conducted using an outside agency that did not use the BSA's name, but the methods and goals , to see if girls should be allowed. This was to show that the General Population was in favor of a coed outdoor program. Again,, could you show me where the membership summary is because I think you are confusing it with the General Population Survey, which was indeed overwhelmingly for it. When discussing this matter locally at the time, it was heavily against allowing girls into the program. Sorry I beg to differ. BSA has all kinds of contact information and does contact folks directly for various polls. Remember the the poll where 94% of those surveyed were either Against (18%) or Strongly Against (76%) "Instapalms?" That was done directly via email. BSA National deliberately conducted the poll the way they did to limit membership response. Remember they 1) used biased survey questions 2) mandated attendance at town halls with the council key 3 to be eligible to take the survey, 3) announced to councils the day or two PRIOR to the National Scout Jamboree that these key 3 town halls would need to be held and 4) limited the town halls and surveys to a 4 week period, which included the National Scout Jamboree which many council Key 3 members attend, so no meetings could be done during that time. My Council Key 3, especially the SE was extremely ticked off that national did this. In my neck off the woods, the notice for the meeting was 2 days for the first one and 5 days for the 2nd. First meeting had approximately 9 volunteers in attendance. Do not know how many attended the 2nd meeting. A 3rd meeting was scheduled, but it was pointed out that it was going to be done after the survey was closed. When folks in my district found out I was attending the first meeting, ALL of those contacted me were against the move. Understatement. My council key three were furious at the way National did it, and the SE expressed it publically at the town hall. One Key 3 member said privately that he felt national threw the councils under the bus on this matter. Another understatement. We have lost folks locally because of this duplicity. We have longtime volunteers who feel betrayed and no longer trust National. Some left for good. Others are sticking around and only focusing on their units, not promoting any HA bases, NSJs, other national activities, or even supporting the council because of this.
  9. If the surveys showed members were in favor of adding girls, then A) Why were the results of the MEMBERS (emphasis) survey never published, and B) Why did they exclude Western Region's LDS members , according to one note in mice type I saw at the beginning of the survey?
  10. I wonder if the fact that BSA attempted to defend its brand in the 1920s against GSUSA will play a factor in this case?
  11. From https://www.wsj.com/articles/boy-scouts-coed-recruiting-touched-off-ground-war-with-girl-scouts-11612094400
  12. We had that problem with advancement reports. I know for a fact some SMs signed off for MBs I taught that their Scouts did not complete.
  13. Well the wife and I got an automated notice stating: I contacted the registrar about the issue, especially since I will work with any Scout in the council and not just my unit. Registrar stated this happened automatically to ALL registered MBCs in the council. She is working on fixing the problem, but it will take some time. Wife is absolutely furious over this, and has decided to do #2 approach at the moment. Remember she has had registration issues in the past. This is the Scouter who has completed and submitted 6 applications (one of which was hand delivered to the council office), and had served over an 8 year period as AWDL, WDL, ADL, CSDC Staff, and MBC while being officially unregistered because NONE of the applications were processed until last year. She was "ineligible" for a Heroism Award for saving someone's life because she was "not registered" despite having submitted two applications and serving as a AWDL at the time of the rescue. I am hoping she will cool down and laugh the matter off once the problem is rectified.
  14. No, Kosnoff, does not want 0 assets, he wants the complete and total dissolution of the BSA, and " if a new organization like the BSA is really needed, it starts from scratch." That is what he said on the Diane Rheem Show a while back.
  15. It depends, how does the adult want to be addressed? Growing up, we had a LtCol. in various positions. He was also a MD. We addressed him as "Doc _____________" or just plain "Doc" In my middle son's den, his DL was an MD, but went by "Mr. _______________"
  16. Mixed emotions on this move. One the YPT side, I think it is VITALLY needed. Grant you I know of a few MBCs who have been "dropped" for various reasons, i.e. accidentally, YPT while current, expires in the new charter year and council drops, council loses paperwork ( in one case over a 7 year period) etc,. But Everyone needs the YPT training and background check. On the other hand, you got some experts who volunteer when they can, and if the dysfunctional council/district don't follow up and remind them they need to redo YPT for the next 2 years, we lose some very knowledgeable people. Best example of that is the retired judge who has served as an ASM, district finance chair, district chair, and on the council committee in the past. Since his kids aged out long ago, and he travels to visit them now, he is only registered as a MBC for several MBs. When I went looking to contact him for one of the MBs, he was missing from the list. Followed up with him, and no one ever contacted him to see if he was still willing to be an MBC and his YPT needed renewal.
  17. As a former pro, I cannot tell you how many former coworkers either doubled, and in one case tripled, their salaries leaving the BSA to work for a board member or with the board member's company.
  18. I do not think you can make that a blanket statement. Every council is different. In mine, we have had some great volunteers on the district and council levels who get fed up with the interference of professionals in their programs that they say the heck with it, if the DE wants to tell me how to do things, he can run it. It is a major problem. Best example I can give is district camporee chief being told told that a Cub Scout event would be held simultaneously at the same camp as the district camporee and IOLS training. This information was given 5 day prior to the camporee. Both the council training chair running the training and the camporee chief objected to the Cub Scout event occurring because it took areas of camp that were designated for events and would cause further parking issues, taking up more event areas. Camporee chief stepped down after the event, and the council training chair stepped down once the year was up. Another camporee chief found out his event was cancelled via email after it was announced at the district committee meeting. And the email came from a volunteer asking if it was true. He did not know about the decision. Sad thing is no one wants to run events anymore because of the constant interference. And the Scouts are suffering.
  19. Council fee is $33 on top of everything else. Got a letter today saying all district/council camping activities, not just the Cub Scout Family Activities, needs a certified Camp Administrator and the cost of the virtual training is $55. WHY DOES IT COST IF IT IS VIRTUAL AND REQUIRED FOR PROGRAM? ( emphasis) I can understand IOLS charging. had to pay for food, supplies, handouts, etc. And when I did Cub Scout Basic Leader Training, we charged $5 for snacks, handouts, and a resource CD I put together. The info on the CD was well worth the $5 by itself. But $55 for a virtual class taught by a volunteer?
  20. Sadly I have seen the schools NOT prepare the Scouts for the Cits. I was working on Cit Nation with a group in my car after doing Washington DC. 3/5 had Civics in high school, and 1 was taking civics in HS. ONLY THE 5TH GRADE HOMESCHOOLED WEBELOS COULD ANSWER ANY OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR CIT NATION! (emphasis, not shouting)
  21. DON'T GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😝 Seriously, I can see some pros doing just that.
  22. In the past, the workbook that had all the approval signatures in it was the one that needed to be used, even if changed. HOWEVER if all three approval signatures are not in it, the new workbook needs to be used. For example Life Scout Louis begins the process, gets all the approval signatures, and completes the project using Workbook A. When the EBOR occurs, Workbook C is in effect. But since all the approval signatures are in Workbook A, and the project was completed while Workbook A was in effect, it is valid. Life Scout Laura starts of her project process using Workbook B. She has completed all the paperwork, and has gotten her SM's Signature. BUT Workbook C come out. Now Laura has to cut and paste everything into the new workbook, have the SM sign the new workbook, and get the rest of the signature in the new work book. Again that is the directions I have had for as along as I have been an adult. BUT "always in motion, the future is." So check with your council advancement folks.
  23. In 1995 when I worked at scout camps in the UK, I encountered both Scouts and Guides. Guides tended to be younger. I know one Guide troop lost 1/2 their members when my friend, a female Queen's Scout, became adult volunteer with the troop. A lot of her ideas, based on Scouts UK, were what the girls wanted, but could not be implemented. So she started her own Scouts UK troop.
  24. Do you mean the videos and town hall sessions that councils got notified to conduct and show days before the NSJ, and had to be completed about 1.5 to 2 weeks after the NSJ, when many Council Key 3s are at, so no meetings could be done? Yep I remember it well. I got hold of one of the videos early, THANK YOU SCOUTER.COM MEMBERS ( caps for shouting in praise)! I posted the link and cause a storm in my council as I forced my Council Key 3's hand in having the town halls. They did not I remember those guided questions too. Yep if you didn't know what the purpose of the survey was, and answered honestly, everyone would be in favor. But two things: 1. Why has the results of the MEMBERS SURVEY (emphasis) never been published? I have seen the non-member survey results BSA did, but still have not seen the internal results 2. Why did they exclude the Western Region's LDS Population from the results? Does anyone else remember reading that statement in the "mice type" at the bottom a BSA document? I wondered why they excluded a significant number of the membership, because this was before the announcement that they were leaving. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that the decision was made even before all the town halls, etc. First and foremost is the selection of Surbaugh as CSE. His career primarily focused on the coed programs of Exploring and Venturing. Exploring Execs (EE)/Venturing Execs (VE) are highly specialized. When I was looking into becoming a professional, I talked to an EE. He advised against specializing in Exploring because their was extremely limited opportunities for promotion because it was so specialized. I saw a bit of that with the EE, later VE when Venturing split off, I worked with. So how did Surbaugh become SE with his narrow field of experience with a co-ed program, unless the decision was already made? Also did anyone notice that the June or July 2017 applications BSA created used gender-neutral language? There are a few other things I cannot think of off the top of my head. BUT if you do a search on here from the time period, you can find a lot of other pieces that the decision was made.
  25. William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt figured out why some units succeed and other fail in the 1929 SMHB: " OUTING is three-fourths of ScOUTING." He reiterated that theme throughout his career, with the version inhis last BSHB being "SCOUTING IS OUTING!" National has forgotten that as seen by the proliferation of "paperpushing" MBs, the condoning of "MB Mills" and the de-emphasis of the outdoors i.e. the 2016 CS program revisions and the 2017 revision to First Class rank requirement downgrading the number of campouts from 6 back down to 4., and the emphasis on FIRST CLASS FIRST YEAR." Best example are two of the troops I was in. Both troops had no feeder packs, but they were " Hiking and Camping" troops that normally had 9 weekend campouts, summer camp, and a minimum of 2 day activities. Recruiting was word of mouth and Den Chiefs. One troop folded because of Katrina. They lost their adults, and a bunch of Scouts. Current troop is surviving. We lost 1 Scout due to a death in the family. We lose another this month when he becomes an ASM. We lose my oldest in August, September at the latest when he goes off to college or becomes and ASM. BUT we picked up one who has several friends in the troop. We are getting 2 more at a Cross Over next month. COVID-19 screwed up our plans. but the troop has adapted and overcome. The biggest challenge I see is the loss of revenue from cookie sales due to girls joining BSA and not GSUSA. From the girls I have talked to, they want the outdoors. And GSUSA does not provide that. When their national president state they are an outdoor program is proud of the fact that 15% of their girls camp at least once a year, that is not an outdoor program. Few girls means a smaller sales force. And the heavy focus on cookie sales is also a major turn off. Locally they spend about 2 -3 months doing cookie sales. Then their is the prestige factor. Eagle is a lot more prestigious in the public's eye because A) it has been called the same thing since 1910, and B) BSA has promoted and kept records. How many times has GSUSA changed their top award's name? And why is it that I can contact someone at the council office, used to be national office, and verify Eagle Scouts in my current troop all the way back to 1925, but the GSUSA cannot do the same?
