@vol_scouter, i am a former professional. I can tell you there are ways to influence who is selected onto different boards. I got in trouble for encouraging my nominating committee to go after the best people for the jobs instead of having them select "yes men." I know folks who were removed from EBs because the questioned the recommendations of the SE. One person was relieved mid term. As for surveys, they are a joke. You made a comment how they are biased towards the predetermined decision. Remember the 2015 Instapalm survey? 94% either disagreed (18%) or strongly disagreed (76%) with instapalms, yet they went ahead anyway. And i am still waiting on the results of the members' survey on girls in scouting to be published. All i keep seeing are the nonmember results.

My comments in Red. Only 60 hours?!?!?!?! When I was a DE, 60 hours was a light week. Longest weeks were approx. 114, with me being on call another 30 hours. And in reality DEs are on call 24/7. Best wedding gift I got was a card from my volunteers saying they would not call me between the hours of 10PM and 6AM unless it was an absolute emergency. Actually I worked to make the Scouts and Programs successful. Helping the adults was gravy. As for receiving credit, I really did not care about that, although it was nice to be recognized as the " Boy Scout Guy." (sarcasm on) Yes I loved being yelled and cursed out at by parents and volunteers especially over matters I not only had no control over, but also agreed with the volunteers.(sarcasm off). About $40K/year!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I wish. My salary was significantly lower, and the current salary is not much higher. My council tried to hire me back a few months ago, and the starting salary was no way near near $40K. Agree. I know some of the abuse my aunt, uncle, and mother went through working in education. In fact when I was doing my education practicums and student teaching, EVERY teacher I talked to tried to tell me go into another profession; education was not worth it. Only reason they were still teaching was because they were so close to retiring with their pension. They told me some of their horror stories dealing with students, parents, and administrators.

Not all pros are in it to make money. There were many I encountered who wanted to give back to the program that gave them so much. Sadly we don't stay around too long.

Sadly the professional's focus is on the "3 M's: Membership, Manpower, and Money." And the order of importance varies from SE to SE. And Membership needs to be 'Balanced Growth" i.e. units, Cubs, Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venturing , etc. If a DE does not focus on balanced growth, even if it makes more sense to focus on existing units and increase Members and not Units, they are penalized. Even though it is easier to support an existing troop than to start a new unit. Especially in an area that cannot support more units, despite what the outdated data says.

NOT TRUE! In this interview https://dianerehm.org/shows/2019-08-20/a-moment-of-reckoning-for-the-boy-scouts-of-america-and-a-history-of-sexual-abuse . He stated he wanted the complete dissolution of the BSA and IF something like Scouting is still needed, it starts from scratch. Again the IF it is still needed, from the tone of the response, he doesn't believe Scouting is needed.

In the past I would say it is protecting everyone, but since the bankruptcy, I believe you are correct.
-
Actually, JASMs do not need YPT since they are 16 and 17 years old.
-
(sarcasm on) 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Funniest thing I heard, covers LC and CO's. That's Why National is throwing them under the bus in the bankruptcy. (sarcasm off)

YP rules were not extended outside of Scouting activities until 2018. So glad I was an 18-20 YO ASM when I was.
-
Which is why my son is not becoming a Scouter, and why I am backing him up in his decision 100%.
-
THANK GOODNESS BSA recognizes careers that require one-on-one.
-
The reason why my 17 year old Eagle, soon to be 18 years old, is not staying on either as an ASM, a Unit College Scouter Reserve, or Merit Badge Counselor is because of the YP policy that expands no 1 on 1 contact outside of Scouting. He has friends and family under 18 involved in Scouting. Under YP rules not only would he have to cease and desist contact with them, but also he would not be able to share a room with his younger brother when he is home from college on the weekends. His best friend is 17 and in high school still. As soon as he turns 18, he too will quit Scouting because of current YP rules being expanded outside of Scouting. If he was to remain in Scouting, he would not be allowed to call classmates, most of whom are in Scouting, to have online study sessions, do group projects, call folks for help, etc. And yes there are some jobs that do require folks to be one-on-one, and not have 2 adults present. @David COmentioned teachers. I can add health care providers. Do we really need to call National and report all the doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, etc who have had one-on-one contact with Scouts when the Scouts were their patients? And don't say I do not take YP policy seriously. You can read about some of the things I have had to deal with on this matter in other posts.

How are girls in Boy Scouts working out in other areas?
Eagle94-A1 replied to Tatung42's topic in Open Discussion - Program
That may be national's definition of "family scouting," but that is not how it is being interpreted, especially with the mixed messages National is sending out about families going to HA bases, and councils promoting the camps for families to utilize. Also does anyone else remember the SCOUTING MAGAZINE article a few years back about family camping with Scout Age ( 11-17 years old) youth? You are preaching to the choir. I have NEVER (emphasis) had a good family camp out at the Boy Scout/Scouts BSA in over 30 years. Last time I dealt with the situation above, it lasted monthly for 18 months. I lost track of the number of parents meetings, counseling sessions, ad nauseum I and others did trying to real in adults. The SM was trying to work with them and wean the new parents from Cub Scouts. It got to the point that nor only the SM corps wanted to resign, but also the Scouts were getting fed up with the interference. When my sons had enough, we walked. Yep grow your own. And 3 years is about right. Even BSA now admits " Internal and external research shows that mom is usually the decision maker when it comes to extracurricular activities for children of Cub Scout age. Therefore, building outdoor activities and events that appeal to moms is key to getting as many Cub Scouts outdoors as possible." and "their parents may be anxious or concerned about what camping might be like for their family." https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/trail-to-adventure/cub-scouting-and-the-outdoor-program/?fbclid=IwAR3YeG_mSqka_uzXtrVL42WKxEN48fmdtsOkFdEUMsm40zpSKTYcPYiB0ws IMHO this is a major hurdle female troops need to overcome. AND I have been told you still see some meddling, even with officially "trained" Scouters, because they do not have the experience to know when to leave the Scouts alone. -

Probably because they did not keep any records of abusers and alleged abusers to keep them out of the program. Remember, BSA's CSE at the creation of the IVF, James West, was a lawyer. BSA used the technology and legal standards of the day to try ans keep folks out. I worked for the YMCA, and never heard of any such policy or practice. -

I will keeep my troop doing Scouting until i am no longer capable. If "family scouting" is the only way to be in the BSA, the Scouting is dead, and I am gone. -
Chapter 11 Announced - Part 5 - RSA Ruling
Eagle94-A1 replied to Eagle1993's topic in Issues & Politics
I am not a lawyer, but wouldn't this section of the judge's order For the avoidance of doubt, even if the Sexual Abuse Claim is time-barred under an applicable statute of limitations, each Sexual Abuse Survivor is required to file a Sexual Abuse Survivor Proof of Claim in order to preserve the right to pursue a Sexual Abuse Claim, or such Sexual Abuse Survivor who fails to timely file a Sexual Abuse Survivor Proof of Claim shall not be treated as a creditor with respect to such claim for the purposes of voting and distribution. give those who did file a POC in a SOL barred state the opportunity to press their claim IF the SOL is removed or expanded? So if Victim A is POC is barred in State 1 and filed their POC before the deadline and the SOL is lifted, then the money comes from the Future Claims Committee? -

I also was abused at home. Best thing my father ever did was leave. Scouting was my safe place, and all of the adults were positive role models who i can never thank enough. They showed me positive ways of acting and behaving, guided me, and mentored me. Over the years I have encountered many with similar and worse situations. So this is hard on everyone. -
How are girls in Boy Scouts working out in other areas?
Eagle94-A1 replied to Tatung42's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My responses will be in red Partially. Summer Camp and COHs are joint troop activities. Mostly due to logistics and the fact that siblings and parents are in both troops. Otherwise the two troop are separate doing their own meetings and monthly activities. In fact the girls troop is more active than the boys. IMHO "coed troops" do more of a disserve to the boys than the girls. as noted above. In fact, the girls troop I know specifically does not do meetings and monthly trips with the boys troop because they are more of a hinderance than a help. The Boy's troop is not as organized, and the girls get frustrated. Eventually yes I do, especially as National keeps harping on "family scouting." Do not get me started on "family scouting." Girls' Troop need experienced Scouters with a youth background in the outdoor program who know how the program is supposed to be run and can implement it. Training can only go so far with new folks. Experienced Scouters willing to teach and mentor new Scouts is vital to a successful program. The troop I referenced above has that experienced SM ( he was my sons' old troop's SM until his daughter was able to join). The problem he is encountering is that NONE (emphasis) of his female ASMs has an outdoor background beyond family camping at the Cub Scout level. So not only is he working with his Scouts, but the adults as well. -

I'm there with you. My only advice is: FOCUS ON YOUR SCOUTS! (emphasis, not shouting at ya.) I am once again involved at the district, for the moment, because my sons wanted me to run the district camporee so it would be fun. But once camporee is done, so am I at the district level. The council can merge with neighboring councils next year, sell/return to trusts the camps after my camporee for all I care (although I will miss the local one tremendously), but my focus is on my Scouts. As to why I am active here and a few other places, one reason is that I get more info here than from my council. Sad when you find out on Scouter.com what is going on and tell your DE, and he is absolutely clueless. Good luck. -
WOW. I understood why my pack did not change to the December 2016 requirements as soon as it went into effect and waited until June 2016 when the Program Year ended. A) The Scouts were midway through their books, and changing requirements midyear was one one of the silliest things National did; B. the Webelos 2s/ AOLs had completed everything except one requirement for an elective AB that they needed to Cross Over and to make them change requirements midstream is not fair to them; and C) the new requirements would have required the pack to replan the rest of the year that was planned and advertised since August. Using the old requirements 3 years after they changed and new books have been published?

According to my old books, Wolf was 3rd grade, Bear was 4th Grade, Lion was 5th with Webelos being earned at the end of the year and you crossed over.

I can't believe anyone is saying they are getting off easy. In my neck of the woods, there are talks on losing 2 camps, not hiring needed staff, and possible multiple council mergers. -
Chapter 11 Announced - Part 5 - RSA Ruling
Eagle94-A1 replied to Eagle1993's topic in Issues & Politics
"FAMILY SCOUTING" IS NOT SCOUTING! I have seen "Family Scouting" first hand it nearly destroyed a troop. I have been a long time member of this organization. I will not be a member of any "family scouting" group. And how many families can afford those HA trips? I grew up in a poor family with an abusive father. The best thing he ever did was walk out on me. Scouting gave me opportunities I would never have had if he stayed around. More importantly Scouting gave me positive role models that influence me to this day. And I know I am not alone, I have worked with and mentored Scouts in similar or worse situations over the years. You cannot get the same experience with parents and siblings constantly interfering. Sorry for the rant, Those who read my post 3-4 years ago know all about the issues I had with "family scouting." -
Fall 1982 Was when Tiger Cubs was introduced nationally, but it was an optional, separate program for second graders. They only wore an orange tshirt or sweatshirt, and they got iron on tiger paws. Cub Scouts was only 3 years: 3rd grade Wolves, 4th Grade Bears, and 5th Grade Webelos. Some time in the late 1980s, I think 1989, Tiger Cubs became part of Cub Scouts officially. In the 1990s, they turned Cub Scouts from a 4 year program (Grades 2-5), to a 5 year program ( Grade 1-5) because they realized 9-12 months was not enough time to transition. Then circa 2018 Lions came about. As for uniforms, August 1, 1984 was when the Tan and Green uniform with Cub Scout insignia was authorized. Although Dink and Duff in BOYS" LIFE introduced it in April or May of 1994. the published reason for the option was to allow those folks who outgrew their blue uniform the chance to save some money.
