It is all worth it even though it is tough at times
mattman578 replied to mattman578's topic in Cub Scouts
Yea me giving him the adult application is my way of telling him to Nut up or Shut up in a very scout like way -
This is a fun topic for me I am doing the My scouting adventure with my webelos and they needed to make a patrol flag and have a patrol name. I took one of my wives white table cloths (do not tell her) and got some fabric markers and let the boys go they had a blast the flag looks like they made it and they are very proud of it.

Have fun and remember now that he is a boy scout time to just sit and drink coffee that is what they tell me I am still a den leader. and welcome to the camp fire

I was feeling beaten up and thinking I was not really making a difference this weekend. We were on a camp out and one of the parents yelled at me because of and injury we had at the campsite while I was not there. Not sure how I was going to be able to stop it when I as attending a campfire but I was supposed to. I am going to give him a leader application at the next meeting. Basically after that I was starting to feel that cubmaster/den leader just might not be worth it. Then I get and email from one of my webelos mothers asking me if I can come to grandparents day at her sons school his grandparents live far away and he would love for me at attend so as I whip the tear from eye and respond with a "YES" I know I am at least making a difference in this one boys life. So my advice is when the going gets tough just remember the looks on the kids faces when you see them at the store or some other non scouting event and that they look up to you and it is all worth it

We recruit form one elementary school complex two buildings lunch spin ups and back to school nights very busy time of the year. Our DE tells us what schools we can go into but one pack in our area does not listen to him and showed up at our Join Scout Night and just confused the parents not a fun thing. We also preform word of mouth and keep growing

One scout master on here said that one boy brought frozen microwave pizza's to a camp out so this got me thinking as a Webeols den leader I was really excited when the case iron chef requirement came out I made my boys cook a meal while on the camping. I gave them only two requirements they must stay in budget and it had to have more the three ingredients and not grilling. Well we had egg burritos with the eggs cooked in plastic bags we had some camp chilie and taco pie and some really proud boys as they were only supposed to make food for the den but made enough for the hole camp to eat !!! they asked me if they could cook again on there next camp out

I have with council's approval had the Webelos share the same tent all by themselves !!! they were 300 ft away from me and there parents (the father you are away from us the more noise you can make) and they had a great time.Parents and siblings were not allowed in the tent or even near the tent !!! Now there parents were there on the camp out alone with other cub parents and they had a great time i mean really good time they were even quite at night witch really surprised me

I also have a son with special needs High functioning autism and cub scouts has been great for him he has a wonderful time and everybody loves him (so they tell me lol). But I am and active member in the pack leadership and will take special precautions when the pack is doing something that is difficult for him or causes issues. Example we do not come to the pine wood derby car clinic the sound of power tools is pure torture. At the bike rodeo I ran next to him on his bike and pushed him so we would not be there all day waiting for him to make a lap. He still had a great time he thought I was like Mario Kart !!! So when my son crosses over in to Boy Scouts I am going to do the same thing. If the troupe is going to take a bike ride my son most likely will not go. or I will go and work something out. Not sure what needs your scout in question has but his parents should not push him to do stuff that is hard for him on his own

I just started hammock camping and find it a lot better then a tent a cot it is lighter and quicker to setup and I am not stiff in the morning. If you want to get more information on hammock camping check out this youtub channel https://www.youtube.com/user/shugemery and this book http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Hang-Illustrated-Hammock-Camping/dp/1466263687/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442594417&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=the+ultimmate+hang and this channel buy the author of the book https://www.youtube.com/user/hansenoutdoors the book and videos will even show you how to make your own hammock out of a table cloth My system is commercial system I wanted a bug net and have issues with the automatic thread injector (sewing machine) I use tree straps with woopie slings and a trap with dutch wasps for adjustment I also use under quits and a top quilt getting your rig the way you wanted it takes some practice just because there are so many options out there to choose from Take your time and play with your system if you have trees in your yard set it up and sleep in it your neighbors will just think you are in trouble again

Getting inexperienced leaders up to speed faster
mattman578 replied to MattR's topic in Open Discussion - Program
It did not take me long to get up to speed I started when my son was a tiger when to Webolos outdoor training and then read the den leaders guide I did do a lot of camping as a kids many in my friends back yard and then a lot in high school. I did work a a summer camp for kids while in high school so that helped a little bit. Manly the webolos out door training was a really big help basically a bunch of den meetings the leader asked me to teach a section of it and that was really helpful for me let me get some practice on holding den meetings. It was kind of funny now that I think about it the leader of the training did not really do that much training he let us do it so I guess for that time we were the boys and leading -
blw2 I went thought the same thing with my daughters Girl Scout Troop there YP is two leaders and do not want any adults or siblings. I do take my webelos camping as a den with one two other parents and no little bothers or sisters and they have a good time

Yet again, best scouting promotion not by BSA pro's ...
mattman578 replied to qwazse's topic in Scouting Around the World
guys that video made me cry it was a good one -
the fun part about the pink flamingo fundraiser is the following you sell people insurance so that flamingos do not end up on there lawn you sell people the right to pick whose lawn the flamingos spend 24 hours you sell the person the right who got flocked to name whose next you keep the flamingo's for next year they do not eat much two flocks of flamingos cost $224 you can sell the insurance for 20 or 10 and the flocking for 20 or 10 you are proving a service because you are playing a piratical joke on somebody friend when sombody gets flocked you put a really big sing in there yard that says they have been flocked by your org and my nephew did this to raise money for a trip he was taking with just him and his dad they made around 3000.00 in a month so guys think about it how many people do you know who would love to have pink flamingos on there front lawn send me 20.00 and there address and I will make sure it works

Where have you gone for High Adventure trips?
mattman578 replied to KenD500's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I take the webelos to a local camp here that has a high ropes course every year for high adventure and they love it -
I think this year I am going to get my Webelos to raise there own money to go on a high adventure camping trip buy doing a pink flamingos fundraiser. My big issue with fund raisers is the low profit margin. if you want more info on a pink flamingos fundraiser please follow this link http://www.flamingofundraising.com/

I went to district the pack is failing very low numbers and I think the CO really does not care. I did report the AS not having a background check and being wanted for a sex offence to our district executive and he has had enough and basically told us we could start recruiting out of there school so I am just waiting to see what happens
