In general, yes, you need to talk to the Cubmaster about going over your head. Even while though I was the Cubmaster, I would inform the WDL of what my son has done. And also have him tell the WDL and explain what took place. Generally it was work on Pins outside the Den/Pack Meetings. We supplied photographic evidence or other items as needed. Yes, there is a section within the Guide to Advancment that talks about this and the Webelos Book. This Mom will more than likely have a rude awakening within Boy Scouts since it's up to the Scout to talk to the SM about advancement (in general).

Is there a reason why you have to meet right after school? Our Pack meets at 7pm for Den/Pack Meetings. Den Meetings can be anywhere. What's your program? Is it exciting? What do you do? Do you host a few Den Meetings and show the Parents how easy it is? Gotta get them hooked first.

Sorry, I am going to rain on this parade. Yes, you should be concerned. You need Tigers. They also bring parents who will be Den Leaders, CC, MC, CM and such. They can help out with Pack Events and Outings. It is understandable about the Tiger Parents not understanding the program. It's not the Baby Sitters of America. So, they do need to be there. You should find a couple of 1st Graders and ask them what seven friends would they want to have in their Den. Call the Parents and invite them to the Pack Meeting and get them signed up. I had one Den that went through with 2-3 Scouts. In the end it was only one that crossed over. It was an odd Den for that whole cycle. But before and after it there was 8-12 kids in each Den.

If this was a BOR at the Troop level, why was the ASM on the BOR. That isn't allowed. It seems that there are other things afoot within this Troop. The SM does not pick who sits on a BOR. Consult the 2013 Guide to Advancement. The BOR is really under the Advancement Chair. There could be a MC that is incharge of handling the BOR and gets all the paperwork to the Adv Chair. Since your a Troop Committee Memeber, I would see why you having announcements at a Troop meeting would upset the SM. The SPL or OA Rep (Youth) should have made this announcements. The SM could have made those announcements during his SM Minute, but that's not the place either. As to the Facebook issue, if your posting photos of your son then that's fine. If it's with other Scouts that you can identify, then he may have a point. Not all parents want photos of their Scouts on Social Media. The Council/OA Lodge product selling should not have any direct affect at the Troop Level. Again, let the Scouts pitch the idea. You do the leg work for the leagle part that scouts cannot sign for. Hopefully you were using BSA Approved Vendors and that it was a project that was actually wanted. Have you taken the Scoutmaster/ASM Training and ITOLS? That might help you to better understand what is and isnt part of the program. Hopefully the SM & ASM are fully Trained too. The SM & ASM dynamic isn't lost on me, it isn't healthy. I personally would have the ASM as a MC. Dating while camping with the Troop is called Family Camping. It's not Scouting. That detracts from the whole program.

I will concur about doubling up on many of the items. If you take a look at the Outdoor Group, you could lump them all into one fantastic weekend. Outdoorsman, Naturalist, Forrester and Geologist. Granted you can get a start and complete a majority of these. But there are some requirements that will/could be finished later. Would I do it all in a weekend? No. I would create several Outings that covered the requirements and also to cover them again on later outings for reinforcement and also for those Webelos who didn't make the first outing. Again, just like others, I am not there to rush or short-change the Scouts.

Camping / Sleeping Arrangements / Safe Scouting
Hueymungus replied to comchair's topic in Issues & Politics
Hueymungus is wrong on that, perhaps it's a policy of his pack/troop.. #8 ,, Male and female leaders must have separate sleeping facilities. Married couples may share the same quarters if appropriate facilities are available. Thems the rules... I said this: "Besides, females sleep elsewhere in seperate campsites/areas" Um....what is the difference? It's seperate. A campsite can be on the other site of a trail or 15 feet away. And that's how you split hairs.... -
Camping / Sleeping Arrangements / Safe Scouting
Hueymungus replied to comchair's topic in Issues & Politics
Nope...this isn't family camping. Also, Dad has a Girlfriend not a Step-Mother not a legal guardian. Besides, females sleep elsewhere in seperate campsites/areas. A Webelos Campout is for the Boys to experince Scouting on their own with their buddies and create a team building atmosphere. If Mom came along, then she would have to sleep elsewhere anyway. On a sidenote; I would require all non-registered adults take YPT and provide the certificate. -
What can pack funds be spent on.
Hueymungus replied to lchandler's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So very wrong. If the Committee is going ahead with this, go to the COR and explain. If the COR is in on it, time to jump ship (if you can) and find another Pack. Alert the Parents. Have the Committee Meetings at someone's house and do potluck. Lame... -
The BSA has yet to send out anything about it.

Are there too many Training Courses?
Hueymungus replied to Sqyire21's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Quality Trainers delivering quality training is what is needed. It does not always happen. Outside of that, all trainings are needed to help provide a better program to the Youth. -
Discipline Policy for Troop--suggestions needed
Hueymungus replied to 5yearscouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Bring it to the Troop, have them discuss it. The PLs bring the suggestions to the PLC. The PLC debates and creates it. PLs bring it to the Troop. Troop debates. PLs bring back to PLC for modification. SM has oversight via Guided Discovery. PLC finalizes and then Troop votes. Democratic. If Troop Committee creates it, it's not. -
If you look at the requirements, it is really a long talk with the MBC. In Part 5b (listed as a here) is to be done in front of the MBC, so that's up to the MBC to accept. Choose one welding process. Set up the process you have chosen, including gas regulators, work clamps, cables, filler materials, and equipment settings. Have your counselor inspect and approve the area for the welding process you have chosen. #6 is bring you work to the MBC and show them what you did. After successfully completing requirements 1 through 5, use the equipment you prepared for the welding process in 5b to do the following: Using a metal scribe or soapstone, sketch your initial onto a metal plate, and weld a bead on the plate following the pattern of your initial. Cover a small plate (approximately 3" x 3" x ¼") with weld beads side by side. Tack two plates together in a square groove butt joint. Weld the two plates together from 6c on both sides. Tack two plates together in a T joint, have your counselor inspect it, then weld a T joint with fillet weld on both sides. Tack two plates together in a lap joint, have your counselor inspect it, then weld a lap joint with fillet weld on both sides. Overall, this is a skills teaching time. If the Scout wants to do this MB, then I would get a Buddy and find a MBC that will be onsite and sign-off. The Scout that already knows Welding can help teach his buddy. EDGE.

Besides getting in contact with the CC & COR, you should look at what the BSA says: http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/home/marketing/resources/socialmedia.aspx Also their Facebook Page has this: https://www.facebook.com/BoyScoutsofAmerica?sk=info This link is referenced within the first one. It's in there. There might not be hardfast rules from BSA, but these guidelines along with YPT is what I teach at our U of Scouting for Social Media Class. As to the whole "not being fun" issue. As other's have pointed out, you need to speak to the Den Leader and Committee Chair (CC). If there is a new Cubmaster, talk to them. And, if so inclined, sign up yourself. It's not as daunting as it seems. It's quite fun.
-
I would say yes, since the work can be verified. However, you need to Scout to come to you and ask about the MB and not the other way around.

The OA has done our Ceremony for three of the five years my son was in the Pack. Find the Lodge Advisor and he will get you in touch with the Ceremony Chief. It's free. We also have them put on our Pinewood Derby. It's their fundraiser. Last year they donated a large portion of the money they raised to a Lodge affected by Hurricane Sandy. So, yes...get the OA involved. It's one of the things that they do. Plus, it's fun to watch. Request early.

Ok, several issues here... First, congratulations on going to Wood Badge. I was the Troop Guide in 2011 for the Bobwhites! I am a Beaver... So, what is this ticket item completely say. SMART.....How will you do this, when will it be completed, how will it be completed and why are you doing it? I get the public school part. My Pack is one as well. We had Jewish, Catholic, Christian, Budhist and who knows whatelse. We did not do a lot of praying, but when it called for it, I said a quick prayer. The Webelos II Den did have a Den Meeting about what "Reverent & Faith is and means." Not a huge issue. Remember, the Scouts is based within the understanding that Religion is part of it. This isn't Public School time. It is Scout time. A Public School Teacher isn't leading the class in the Beatitudes. You can get as simple as: The Philmont Grace For food, for raiment, for life, for opportunity, For friendship and fellowship, We thank thee, O Lord. This would work for a Blue & Gold, which I actually did. Simple and generic. For an opening during Scout Week in Febuary it could be a bit more. http://usscouts.org/reverent/prayers.asp has a good selection When your on a Webelos overnight for Outdoorsman, you could work in a Scout's Own. Which, again is not based on one religion. In the talk we had, each Webelos talked about what religion they are and how they practiced, if they went to church. For the Scout who apparently MIGHT be an Atheist, we need to tread lightly here. It very well could be that he does not like Church and says he's an Atheist. So, does he believe in a higher power? It does not have to be GOD or an old guy in a beard. Section 8 And do one of these (d OR e): (pasting this in, put 4 & 5 in. I cannot get them out. But they are D & E) Earn the religious emblem of your faith* Do two of these: Discuss with your family and Webelos den leader how your religious beliefs fit in with the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and what character-building traits your religious beliefs have in common with the Scout Oath and Scout Law. List at least two ways you believe you have lived according to your religious beliefs. I have also only listed the TWO that you could do without going to a place of worship. This is also easy to do in a Den Meeting. It's part of the program. Not everyone needs to or can earn a Religious emblem of their faith. For example, a Jewish family is non-practicing and does not go to synagogue. But, they are Jewish. The BSA has avenues for that Scout to be sucessful with the two items listed. I have not been to church in years, because everytime I look into finding a church, it ends up not being what I want. Sermons are weird and aloof and they always ask for money and it's usually for their own buildings and stuff. Not into that. But, I still believe. God isn't in a house, he (or she) is everywhere. So, really, this is pretty easy to have the Scout earn this section. It is also easy to spend time during the Outdoorsman to have this as a Scout's Own. I would explain that this is going to happen on the overnight so no one is caught off guard, but just do it. As for the Committee. They need to understand that Scouting has religion in it. What are they afraid of? Are they not trained?

http://scout-wire.org/2013/04/18/scoutparent-designation-to-end-july-1/ is the official note. In other sites that I have seen there is a charge of $10. The DE went over it last night at Roundtable. The BSA wants/needs to make sure that anyone associated officially with a Scout Unit is checked and has YPT. It's also to clear the records of people who really don't do anything. I also suspect that since Tiger Parents need to accompany their boys, that this is the way to make sure they take YPT and are covered by Insurance.
-
Yup, I knew of the Unit Scouter Reserve 91U $10 fee/change for awhile. If you follow Scoutwire, a lot of things get announced that way. http://scout-wire.org/ They are on Twitter as well. So, when there is an update, it goes out that way. I suspect that the people registered as PS, will not be re-chartered within the system. If they want to be, it's the 91U, YPT and $10. It's helping to reduce all the paperwork and making sure that those who are registered with the BSA are checked. Makes sense due to all the lawsuits that the BSA is dealing with.

The wording says "And do three of these:" The rowboat is an option, so I suspect it's skipped a lot. If a pool at a swim center has a rescue boat or a boat that they use for this type of activity, then I would suspect under supervision of a trained lifeguard, it could be used. If you want to have this amended email program.content @scouting.org. The Cubscout Books and Program are being updated for 2014-2015 due to Task Force 411.

If they won't commit to a come to a meeting about saving the Pack. It's Dead. Move on. Sorry, but that's the sad news. If you don't meet that the basic requirements, your done. Council won't charter you. Time to notify the DE and see if there is another Pack close by that can take in the Scouts. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-420.pdf Requirements for Pack Registration. Packs must have: IH, CR, CC, two MCs , or one MC and one PT, CM, and one den leader who may be a Tiger Cub den leader, or a Cub Scout den leader, or a Webelos den leader. There must be an AP registered with each Tiger Cub. This person does not pay a fee in this position or fill out an application if they are the parent of the Tiger Cub. A PT is a Pack Trainer. No one has them. And I think that they are gone anyway.

How do you recruit for an LDS pack with tiny area
Hueymungus replied to christineka's topic in Cub Scouts
Packs of any CO can be of any size. Yes, your starting small. Great. It's for the Youth, so go! As to recruiting...Ask each Scout to name 7 friends from Church that they would like to have them join the Pack with them. Ask them who they think for Bears & Wolves would be interested in joining. Then, pick up the phone and dial the parents. Invite them to a Pack Outing that is filled with fun and games. You can get some of the 11 year old Scouts since they are still in the Primary and maybe even some older boys...Eagles to help play games and teach them things. While that is happening, get the parents together and talk to them about Cubscouts and how it relates to their Church. You could get an Elder or the Young Men's President to help deliver the message. https://www.lds.org/callings/primary/leader-resources/scouting-in-primary?lang=eng Main thing is your going to get people who are in your Ward. If multiple Wards are in the church you go to, then you could combine to make one Pack. -
Is there a LIMIT imposed by National on Den Chiefs?
Hueymungus replied to PiperTim's topic in Cub Scouts
Just make sure that the Den Cheifs are quality. That's the key. You can have one for each Den. Though, as Cubmaster I would really only want one for the Webelos I & II Dens since they are moving over sooner. The DC's could help out at Pack Meetings or Events as needed. If the DC was very fun and cool and wanted to hang out with the Tigers, that would be fun. And, just to confirm...there isn't a rule from National. -
Fred: I hear you. I think turn about is fair play. If your coming in and have a kid in the program and also the Troop and start talking that way, you need to provide support. Bring the Boyscouts over to run a meeting, event, put on a demo, provide a Den Chief....something. The other point about helping the first Pack out is even more valid. Is that Pack so bad that a UC/DE needs to step-in or is it a case of "Dad" doesn't get his way? That I totally understand your point. I think that we are on the same page about how the Pack/Troop relationship should work. YIS
