ScoutNut, you are way out of line and off track. Please tell me when I ever said or claimed "It was NOT produced in response to Brian's Web site, as much as he would like to believe it was." This video was made before I posted my site. By the way, does your son the scout like to wear his neckercheif? The answer may show why he did not like the music to this video. Seriously, most young people who I talked with who have seen this video like it. The activities, the message, and yes, the upbeat music. One young man visiting my office, after I showed him this, said to me last week, "Now if that is scouting, sign me up." Scoutnut, where did I ever say I thought this was made in response to me or my site? That claim has just never happened. So, if a scout is really honest, you owe me a public appology here. I am waiting.

Sout or Scout.... let he who has never ever misspelled a single word cast the first stone. LisaBob, I am glad you are showing this video to your friends. The entire reason I put this post up was for that purpose. Seems many folks are very touchy and want to turn this thread into varying topics... from a spelling bee to a discussion on Philmont to the numbers showing on my web page hit counter. Let them have that discussion. But the entire point (people seem to miss these little things) is to make folks aware of this video. From the sounds of things, many folks were not aware this was around. So enjoy the video and have a great day. And note the music is modern, nothing like we listened to at Wood badge (2 words in these parts).

Crew 21, thanks for the well thought out note. As I said before just above, "There IS much work to do and it is much bigger than just one person to do. My goal is to encourage the national folks in Irving to do what has just been suggested: do focus groups, review materials, handbooks, uniforms, etc. And based upon the recently letters from folks on the National Executive Committee I think the wheels are turning! Please don't accuse me of complaining. I am suggesting new roads to go to reverse the membership decline, without changing the values of scouting. We can do nothing, and see the program shrivel up and one day blow away. Or we can recongize there is a problem, and creatively work together to change things for the better. I vote for the later!" Thanks... Brian

It seems like this video is being well received by most viewers. Yes, a short video will not show all the improvements and modernazations that scouting is going through or needs to be going through. Thankfully, the new President of BSA, shares my vision to "keep scouting relevant to the boys of today." (see scouting mag of 2 months ago). There IS much work to do and it is much bigger than just one person to do. So, what does everyone (else) think of this "scout zone" video? For me it is the direction scouting needs to go. Brian (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
-
Have you seen the scout zone video? It is modern, fast paced, with music that will reach many main stream boys. I have just linked it at my website www.savescouting.org This is a great video that shows scouting as many of us would like it to be. Not a single neckerchief is shown! you may have to hit the link twice (link, then back arrow, then link again) for the youtube video part to work. good luck!

I posted this on another site but hope to have someone here answer. What year was the last year that BSA had an increase in enrolment in all categories nationwide? And where can that be documented? I have seen several years and on a national basis, BSA membership continues to drop each year. We need to stop the free fall, but that is being discussed elsewhere. I just want to know this one thing, what year was the last increase. Thanks Brianbuf www.savescouting.org

:Brian, I can't recall exactly, but as i understand it, you attended WB fairly early in your scouting career, is that right? Mainly because you said boys need trained leaders. I suugest you get a few more years of experience under you belt, attend roundtable, local training like Boy Scout leader specific training. THEN, go to WB, you'll have a better idea of what's going on. There may be a decline in membership today, but in any organization, some things are cyclical. Memberhsip will rebound. The best way for your troop to get new boys is to have scouts bring a guest. Good luck. " Gonzo, Thanks for the advice and warm comments. I am curious if anyone has any reliable stats in the last 20 years that show that scouting membership went up nationwide? People say it goes up and down, what was the last year membership went up? This was my question from another thread. If Lord BP had lived 100 years later and had started scouting now, in 2006, what would it look like? Uniforms, merit badges, icons and phrases, etc.? Assume, for kicks, that BP could start a program (despite today's legal, political, and social enviroments that would make it more difficult or impossible.) Just curious of the thoughts out there... Interesting information. Although there seems to be about 5 or 6 posters that post over and over and over on this thread, I sense that most feel like a Scouting movement would not get off the ground if one was started in 2006. Is that the feeling? On another note, Emb012 wrote: "Please stop coming here and wasting our time and getting us to do the job for you. I've given you 4 books you need to obtain and read" No one is wasting your time but you (if you feel like you are.) Simply stop reading this thread if you feel it is a waste. -

"suggest to really jazz things up, yu join forces with Merlyn_LeRoy and improve the scouting for all movement. They are a group of people dissatisfied with BSA, they formed their own splinter group. They have lots of gays, girls and atheists and I bet the rainbow colors should spice things up for yu. " Cute, but I have never said we should turn away from the values of scouting. These people you mentioned are not what I am talking about. But nice dodge... the question remains, if BP had started scouting in 2006, what would it look like? -

(untoward unscoutlike remarks towards a fellow forum member OGE) If we are going to get picky, benifit is spelled benefit. But let's not. B.P., Lord B.P., Baden-Powell, or (name of no one associated with scouting OGE) I'll use them all with upfront apologies. So here is a new twist for all of you, perhaps it should be a new thread. If Lord B.P. lived today (100 years later than he really did), and just came back from a military campaign, say in Iraq, and decided to start an organization to train boys, what would it look like? In other words, if B.P. started scouting in 2006 what would it be like? From uniforms to merit badges to patrol method to national and world organization to icons and patrol names? Anyone dare to speculate? I would say it would be different in many ways from what we have in the BSA today. The icons would be modern, the uniform modern, merit badges like skateboarding and gaming and rollerblading would be there, etc. What do you think Scouting would look like if it was started in 2006? (Some crack about a fellow scouter, taken out by OGE) "but the latest one tells me you have zero knowledge about the history of the program. " OldGreyEagle, unsure what I said that caused this line. I mentioned my dentist made some comments about Lord Powell. I myself did make any references to the history of any program. My motivation for this lastest post is that several people on this thread have defended the huge decline in enrolment as simply kids are just more busy today than ever before. When BusinessWeek came out and said essentially that kids are doing less in some areas like Tennis and other activities I thought it was relavent to this discussion. As I said before, kids will make time for what they like. Lets make scouting good enough, appealing enough, to be something most main stream kids want to do long term. That is why I am posting here (This message has been edited by a staff member.) -
Well, a few "old timers" will flame the heck of this post, but Sunday night our troop had a court of honor that was awesome. Every scout there had at least one rank advancement except the few eagles that were there. Mostly our newer scouts getting to 1st class, along with merit badges and other recognitions, etc. I have never, ever, once shared my views on the uniform or any of my thoughts on scouting with any parent or boy in my troop. I have posted them here, but the kids and parent have never been told about my website or anything, at least yet. The interesting thing is that half way through the program I noticed that only 2 boys were wearing their kneckerchief and only 2 of the adult leaders were also! Most had their full scout shirt on but the kids, individually, had elected not to wear the scarf. I asked one, out of earshot from the others, why he had not worn his, and he said it "looks too dorky.." Perhaps we should update the uniform based, in part, from input from the kids. That would be a novel approach!

brianbuf replied to brianbuf's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Did anyone see this weeks BusinessWeek Magazine? There is an article on how out of shape and fat we are as a nation. It reported that involment in outside activities are down and cited people playing tennis (adults and kids) is down 30% in the last 15 years or so, and other activities as much as 60% in the same time period. What it seems to suggest is simply that perhaps people, kids and adults, may not be quite as busy as we generally preceive them to be. They are making time for the activities that interest them. My entire goal is to help repackage the scouting program (not changing the values) to be something that appeals to kids and parents of today. My dentist, of all people, was discussing this with me not too long ago as he had been to Woodbadge 2 years ago. One of his tickets included reading the bio or auto bio of Lord Powell. My dentist said that upon finishing that book he concluded the scouting program of today is far from what Lord Powell had envisioned. He did not elaborate as my cavity was filled and he went to the next patient. But next time I will quiz him as he is active in his troop. -

I should clarify a couple things. The president I believe is a volunteer position. I was talking about the Chief Executive. I found the 900,000 amount on a website that was actually very unfriendly to scouting so I did not list it but should have. The $900,000 claim is on www.scoutingforall.com which promotes things I do not agree with. My point is not about who goets paid what. Top CEO's do make a ton of money. So be it. My point is that TV advertisiments are not that expensive in the whole scope of things, and that you can get free or sponsored or discounted ones if they really wanted it. -

Wow, this is what I am talking about. "My son still loves the plug in one of Brad Pitts' international spy movies with Sean Connery when Connery asks Pitt where he learned to shoot like that (expert sniper) and Pitt looks so innocently shocked when he replies, "scouting, Sir." Two words. Imagine 20 seconds. " Forget Bobwhites and Moose, this type of message would resonate with most mainstream boys! 2.5 million is really nothing from a national budget. Heck, one website said the president of scouting is paid 900,000. Of course I don't know that, but I do know our local guy made 110,000 per the local paper. Running all the campgrounds and programs is a huge tens of millions of dollars per year undertaking. Huge programs. 2.5 is a very small percent of what an organization of this size goes through a year. Might seem big to an average American, but 2.5 million is very doable for huge national organizations. But chances are the BSA, if they sought it, could get lots of Public Service Announcments (PSA's) or donated or sponsored media time. The point is that the above message from a movie that would be seen as cool, would make Scouting seem useful and cool. Not of course, to be an assasin but to be a marksman. -

Does anyone know how the little option on the left under the poster's name works, the one called "ignore user"? I assume you don't have to read their comments but can see all other posters. I am going to try this now. No secret Ed is not a friendly poster toward me. Click! Sorry Ed, sure going to miss reading what you posted. I was stunned when I learned that scouting is shrinking. In 2005, 1 year alone, venturing shrunk about 10.9%. This same year the total number of active Venture units shrunk by 5%. One out of 20 closed up. Ouch! One of my woodbadge tickets was to promote growth in scouting via a webpage with my ideas and with some other promotions. Please visit www.savescouting.org Now, this was the original posting on this thread (plus one edit). Are some of the posts way off topic here? Humm.. -

Ken- Great post. And to the others: I feel there are a ton of good ideas and questions on this thread. On my website I have a few of my ideas, but I agree there are a ton of questions and things to think about. I certainly do not claim to have all the answers, but feel I have a few. I am learning as we go here. Brian -
Yes, all the extra blood pressure ain't worth it. They ask for facts, I post it (albiet it did not format) and they shred those facts. HINT: look at the end... scouting is down over 2% this year over last. Another Hint: Look at the sticky on at the top of this forum.. a huge discussion on droping numbers. It is a fact, Jack. Like it or not. I think I just hit another home run! Score 2 to nothin. And I think my website is so well written, so well visited, that I am up for the sliver antelope or sliver beaver. I will post here when I get them. Thanks for all the web visits... agree or disagree... it helps my chances for more BSA awards! (Ok, The last paragraph was written tounge in cheek... but go ahead... attack it... a nice slow pitch for someone without a sense of humor to really go after me on). Brian www.savescouting.org

I brought my big barrel bat ed. Lets see. You want the facts, again. #1. Boys life down 30% .. from 650K to 450K right off their rate card. Call them for one. They are free. #2. Link on my website to the BSA site showing a 10.9% venturing decline in a single year. #3. Posts on this and the other one you lurk in stating numbers are down this year, and from reliable posters. #4. I have the Aug 2006 report, as discussed on the other site, showing numbers are down, verified by other posters there. What more do you want? Do you think #s are up? What proof do you have? Icons that I would use.. how many times do I have to refer to NASCAR here and on my site as one thing that is working (see again, my site and Scouting magazine Sept 2006). That is one icon. Now, about the bobwhite patrol.. how many non-scouter youth would know what a bobwhite is... a little out of date with main stream youth I would say. Ed, I have never posted this "proof" or "fact"... I actually said to PM me your email and I will send it over but unsure if that made the thread... so, here it is.. I am unsure if the formating will work, and it is long, but here is your so many times requested proof that scouting enrolment continues to decline 2006 YTD. Again, unsure how this will look.
