Ugly Beading Ceremony
Brewmeister replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I requested, and received, no beading ceremony. I simply picked up my beads from my ticket counselor. My counselor protested and I said I simply don't want the attention. Then my counselor said, "think about your units, and what it means for them to see XYZ, etc etc." So then I said, wait a minute, all through training we were hit over the head with "This is all about ME." Well, if this is about ME, I do not want a ceremony! So that put the end to that. Woodbadge is a training program, nothing more. No need for a big pompous ceremony to tell everybody you got something done, unless you're into the whole self-aggrandization thing. -
Here's another quote for ya. "WHOOSH!" That's the sound of the point flying right over your head.

The Preezy's greatest fear is that this whole episode is met with a collective "meh."

I made some corrections: "I thought I'd bring this old chestnut back to life since Obama has succeeded in confirming my prediction that his plan was NOT to have a plan and was rather merely to let the sequester he created take hold. The whole thing was supposed to be so awful that it would pressure the Republicans into accepting one tax increase after another. Wrong again." These "cuts" could affect the fat in the budget, but instead Barry will let them be as painful as possible. It's as stupid as starving your family so you can afford a trip to Disneyland.

This is one of the topics that showed up as having a new comment on it, so I thought I'd comment to make that statement true.

Debugging and Suggestions for new SCOUTER.com

I know this site is a labor of love, but it's time to get a divorce from this software. Or something. This brings the meaning of awful to a whole new level. -
The knots are all about training, unit performance, and participation at the district level in roundtables and scouting universities to stay trained and informed. If your leaders find those activities "laughable" you have a bigger problem. Go ahead and pass out the forms.

Let's put the God/morality issue to rest
Brewmeister replied to Monkey Tamer's topic in Issues & Politics
If I decided to wander onto an anti-theism forum somewhere and start calling everyone a bunch of godless bigots I would expect a little dissent and wouldn't constantly cry about it. Boo hoo. -

I'm sure that some atheists respect the beliefs of others, but the one who posts here most prolifically is an anti-theist who prefers to denigrate religious beliefs as being foolish worship of a "magic man in the clouds." Hardly respectful or tolerant. -

"Recent topics within 24 hours" still pulls up the majority of topics from 2012 with no recent updates. Pretty much a useless feature at this point. -
Our biggest trophy goes to the best sportsmanship. Each boy has an 8x11 back tag with a number on it. Parents watch the boys during the race and vote on the boy who displayed the best sportsmanship and it's the last trophy awarded.

Better yet go to Joycrest and buy him a patch with an Eagle on it! Billy has earned "his" eagle. The Billy Eagle. Not a BSA Eagle.

1. Clicking "post" does nothing to the screen, even though the post is actually entered. Basically the screen freezes on the post even though it went through. 2. would liek to see a page button at the bottom of the screen as well as the top. -
Part of Cooking requirement 4b: Use a backpacking stove to cook at least one meal. Part of Cooking requirement 6b: Use an approved trail stove (with proper supervision) or charcoal to prepare your meals I see backpacking and trail stove as the same thing. However, requirement 4 seems to deal more with "campsite" cooking, and reqirement 6 with "trail" cooking. Thoughts?

Options for handling campout food and supplies purchasing
Brewmeister replied to Brewmeister's topic in The Patrol Method
I'm getting some good ideas here. We are a troop-method troop that is in transition to patrol method. So traditionally we have handled camp payment on account--the troop grubmaster would go to the store along with some scouts from various patrols and buy the supplies for the entire troop. Expenses would then be divided up and posted by the treasurer to various boys' accounts. I don't think that is optimal but I am working on one thing at a time and I put a premium on patrol method over financial administration. Because the patrols aren't experienced in the process, I am thinking having all the patrol grubmasters (it would only be 3 patrols, probably) meet at the grocery store at the same time, buy their supplies, then take them home to bring to camp. We would take the learning from that experience and use it for future campouts so that hopefully in the future the entire responsibility can be passed to the patrol. As I said, one thing at a time. I'm learning patience thorugh this process, I can tell you that. -
Options for handling campout food and supplies purchasing
Brewmeister replied to Brewmeister's topic in The Patrol Method
For the troops that use a "grubmaster," when you actually drive the grubmaster to the store to do the shopping, who do you have along? Just the grubmaster, or one representative from each patrol so that each patrol is buying their own stuff? -
So, your patrols have planned their menus for the upcoming campout. What is the method that you use to obtain/purchase supplies and food to get them to camp? Just looking to explore some better options for the process we have been using. Please get into the nitty gritty of who does what, how you handle purchasing responsibilities, etc. Thanks.

Since some folks like to toss the word bigot around here like candy at a 4th of July parade, here's an interesting take on the topic. http://jpfo.org/articles-assd03/heller-gun-control-debate.htm I particularly like the Boy's Life reference at the end.

Connecting the Dots: Guns, Gays and Obamacare
Brewmeister replied to DigitalScout's topic in Issues & Politics
True Papa. Rome for instance. Always seem to be swings left to decadence before a hard swing back the other way. So to speak. And the adulation of Obama is nothing new either. Emporers, kings, and so on...all thought to be direct connection to God. Perhaps not quite the second coming as has been bestowed upon our leader, but holding up false gods is nothing new.(This message has been edited by Brewmeister) -
Connecting the Dots: Guns, Gays and Obamacare
Brewmeister replied to DigitalScout's topic in Issues & Politics
Well, the messianic adulation of our current president is rather interesting. I can't recall ever hearing or reading about someone so often referred to in godlike terms, being referred to as, quote-unquote, "our lord and savior," and major publications heralding his "second coming." Make of that what you will. Perhaps it's a sign, or perhaps it's simply that human beings are rarely happy with the status quo. -
Boy Scouts close to ending ban on gay members, leaders NBC
Brewmeister replied to click23's topic in Issues & Politics
I guarantee in the first press conference after the ruling, some tool will utter the words: This is a good start, but we have more work to do. Already happened. Numerous editorials saying that the BSA is cowardly, their position is "ironic," etc. Proof you can't win when you make decisions based on money and political correctness. -

To those folks worried about Gay adults preying on innocent boys; do you as a heterosexual lust adult lust and molest adolescent girls? Or is the temptation just too much? "Well he was just 17...and you know what I mean...and the way he looked was way beyond compare..." "Young scoutmaster...the subject...of school boy fantasy. Don't tent so! Don't tent so! Don't tent so close to me!"
