Back in the 60's there was some element of the scouting program that made the statement, "A scout is square", younger members of the forum may not understand that use of the word square. To be a "Square" meant to be fair, honest, respectful, in other words to do what was right and proper, to be scoutlike Youth doing what is right and proper never has been too popular, the Zoot Suiters, Greasers, Hippies, Disco Darlings, Punks, etc have never claimed to be youth doing what was expected or nice or even engaged in legal activities. As society glorifies the outlaw, the unconventional, the rule breaker, the tax cheat, the drug addict and all manner of illicit behavior, we have to wonder why would anyone aspire to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean or Reverent? There is a segment of the youth population that gets into physical challeneges, be it extreme skate boards, snow boards ot whatever, but how many of them would be attracted to any program the BSA offers? Can a program that values Citizenship, Charactor and Personal Fitness survive in an increasingly hedonistic and anarchistic society?

Not only were the Civil War so (or War of Northern Agression)soldiers 40 -60 years old, they also averaged 250 pounds each best Hollywood moment for me came in 1975, there was a movie called "The Man in the Glass Booth" with Maxililian Schell. It's about a presumed Nazi War Criminal. During the movie an x-ray is produced to prove the man is or is not the criminal and the camera looks through the film, while the Dr looking for a healed fracture. I look at the image and start to giggle, then laugh and then guffaw, my date is totally embarassed as this is a pivital plot point. Through laughs I am able to choke out that not only was the Dr pointing at a pelvis, not as shoulder as had been mentioned, but an IUD was clearly present in the center of the film. Oddly enough, I don't think we ever dated again, Did I mention I am an X-Ray Tech?(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

No, I think I read it correctly, the economy is heavily tilted towards what may be called "Crminal justice' and you are right, thats where the jobs are. I didnt mean to imply anything else Beavah, this may be an instance of identifying a need of what many would consider a key demographic of this area. And I agree, it seems like they are doing fine, its not up to us who know nothing of the program other than a few sentences to judge it harshly, well judge it at all. Now, if I can only remember those words next time in the Advancement Sections?

Of all the spoof Boy Scout movies there are, Bushwhacked has to be one of the best, it has Scoutmaster Jack Erickson (played by Brad Sullivan) as the scoutmaster I want to be. Sure, its called the Ranger Scouts and a bunch of 12-13 year olds become Eagle Scouts (and a girl, cooties and all is included) and the main character Max, is the only adult leading a co-ed trip but beyond that, its just like the troop. Did I mention that I want to be just like Scoutmaster Jack Erickson?

And here I thought Learning for Life was not scouting, can't be as it take governmental money to conduct programs for all youth

Exploring, as part of the Learning for Life program, has a goal of teaching vocational Skills. From the article it looks like the economy of Imperial County is based on criminal activity and at least this Post is on the side of the law. Maybe this is what Beavah talks about when he says that the program has to have the flexibility to offer what the community needs. I think thats what Beavah says, I could be wrong. I mean here we have youth who most likely shoot guns at human targets and its ok, how neat is that?

One of the great things about the internet is that people may state their opinions and the whole world can read what they write. We do have a significant youth population who read these pages or who may yet read these pages as words on the internet tend to linger for quite some time. Of late the message we seem to be sending is if you disagree with someone's statments its perfectly ok to make fun of their name and resort to toliet based humor to belittle the person. That it's ok to drive away those who tink different than we do because they ,of course, are weird Is that the message we wish to send?(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

The troop I serve did have a real patrol that called themselves the Duct Tape Patrol. They took standard grey duct tape and covred a blank patrol medallion. It looked pretty good, but with age the tape sealed in and the ridges of the medallion became prominent and the whole ting took on an unfortunate texture

If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat? You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddie!"

Sounds like a bad situation all the way around. I have some questions about this scout. You say he is loud, somewhat hyperactive and does not pick up on social cues. He is focused on one thing at a time and is oblivious to all else that is going on around him. Is this the first time he has demonstrated this behavior or is this a continued behavioral pattern?

personally I am impressed by the correct use of the word byzantine starting with the lower case its good to stretch ones lexiconic abilities it may be even better to go back to the first sentence Beavah wrote about this topic "I'm thinkin' that if I hear someone use da phrase "that's adding to the requirements!" one more time about somethin' trivial I'm goin' to blow a gasket." The issue isn't about speciously arcane and overly encrypted spreadsheets, but over "TRIVIAL" stuff. Which of course begs the question, "Define Trivial?" One mans Trivia is another's man charactor building block that has been part of this here troop since I was knee high to a grasshopper and no rule book quotin' pedantic policy monger is going to change what we hold dear! Told a young lady this weekend where the caduceus came from and took some convincing I wasnt telling a tale just to let you know when I say trivia, I know trivia! I am confused, first Daddy_O you say "Be thankful for cartoon parents like me; my boy is the one yours hides behind when some tough kid wants his lunch money! Be thankful. You're welcome." and on the same page you post your son does not want to be in the Class Pariah's patrol. So, does he help other people at all times (Pariah or not) or does his choose whom he defends? So Class Pariah cannot depend on your son when some tough kid wants his lunch money or did I misunderstand something?

I don't know how many of you have heard the expression "when all you have it a hammer, evrything starts to look like a nail". I think the same applies to the phrase "you can't add requirements". Just as I told the person who kept saying "when all you have it a hammer, evrything starts to look like a nail". I think its time to buy a few more tools. It may be time for some to develop a more than superficial understanding of the Boy Scout program and not reduce everything to a "you can't add requirements" issue. Until then its up to those who have a deep and thorough understanding of the Policies and Procedures of the BSA and also know the intent of the Policies and Procedures to give answers. One must be able to devine from the few sentences given which scouter is on top of his game and is working to the betterment of the youth he serves verses the ego-centric shrill who needs to go away.

See, the issue to me is using the Bible to attack the Religious aspect of the BSA. That of course infers that one must be a beleiverin the God of Abraham to be a Boy Scout and that is not true. We have several posters who visit this forum who are quite spiritual and whose belief systems have nothing to do with the God of Abraham. Such Scouters maybe followers of Wicca or other beliefs unrelated to the God of Abraham and they are accepted as members of the BSA. For that matter, the following are all religous groups and the religious awardsthoae groups have that Boy Scouts may earn and wear on their Uniforms: Bahai gives the Unity of Man The Bah Faith stands for unity and peace among all of the worlds religions. Followers believe that each religion was suited to the needs of people at a certain time in history. Adult award: Service to Humanity (in green for women and blue for men). Buddists give the Metta, Sangha and Bodhi awards Buddhism grew out of the teachings of Buddha in eastern and central Asia. Buddhists believe that suffering is a part of life and can be overcome by physical and spiritual purification. Adult award: Bodhi, meaning awakening. Hindus give the Dharma award Beliefs date back to 1500 B.C.E. Hinduism, which has its roots in India, is the worlds third-largest religion. The religion is a diverse system of thoughts that encompasses a variety of religious traditions. Adult awards: Saathi, or parent, and Bhakta, or mentor Meher Baba gives the Love for God and Compassionate Father Founded: Early 20th century. Meher Baba, an Indian spiritual master, publicly stated that he was the Avatar (or spiritual being) of his time. He began a life of silence from 1925 until his death more than 40 years later. His followers believe in a concept of nonduality, meaning that God is inherent in all animals and inanimate objects. Baba also believed in reincarnation. Adult award: The Ancient One. No emblem exists for this award. Instead, recipients wear the religious award square knot. Zoroastrians give the Good Life awards Founded: 5th century B.C.E. Zoroaster, the ancient Iranian prophet, gives his name (and his teachings) to this religion. Believers of Zoroastrianism worship one God, Ahura Mazda, who is seen as the counterpoint to chaos and disorder. Followers believe that good deeds and a good life can help stave off the chaos of the world. No adult award. None of the above have anything to do with the God of Abraham. Council Camp-o-ree – Venturing Activities???
OldGreyEagle replied to CNYScouter's topic in Venturing Program
How about a Road Rally through the adjacent town, rememebr a road rally is not about speed Or a "Drifting" demonstration put on by a road club Staying with the automotive theme, a change the tire contest or even change the oil and filter then again you may want to do a Video contest, who can make the best Comercial for Venturing, and show the best at the event, of course they would have to be made and submitted ahead of time An all night Venturer only Movie Marathon would be special How about a Texting competition, the fastest on a complete kepboard and then an "old style" phone You could hold an Ethical Controversey Forum, for the Venturing Silver. Have the youth prepare ethical dilemmas and have then discuss them -
more adding to the Eagle application requirements VENT
OldGreyEagle replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Advancement Resources
Just to be sure I don't get accused of too much muck raking or rabble rousing, I did end up saying the best route was for the boy to get a Boy Scout uniform and then sell it, or more properly have the buyer identified when the uniform is bought. At times, going along to get along has its merits Whoa, did I really just say that? -
Boy Scout Camp will always be cheaper than the other camps because like the Church Camp described, there is a lot of volunteer labor utilized. How much more would your Council Camp cost if every Troop site needed to be staffed with paid employees? Troop leaders, paying a fee to stay, provide supervision for the youth when the youth are not in a program area. The adult leaders who go to camp on their own dime and vacation are the foundation of an affordable camp, well at least less than Space Camp. To all Scouters a big Thank you, you make scouting possible If you are paid to do Scouting, you are called a Professional. If you are not paid to do Scouting, you are called a Volunteer. If you pay to do Scouting, you are called... ... A Scouter or a scout, its age dependent(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

more adding to the Eagle application requirements VENT
OldGreyEagle replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Advancement Resources
Oh you raspscallion Pack, you know there is no requirement for a scout to own a uniform, one that fits him or otherwise. How much time do we have and is the boy a feisty sort? If there is time, have the boy show up neatly dressed and inform the Board of Review he has no uniform that fits and since a uniform is not a requirement of the BSA, he needs not to have one for his Eagle BOR. He should also be ready to explain why he is at an Eagle Board of review and doenst have a uniform that fits as well. If he gets turned down for the BOR, appeal it, go to National and you will probably win. On the other hand, tell me more about this Venture Patrol (as opposed to a Venturing Crew) green shirt the BSA sells, I am not sure I have heard of it Then again, how about the boy buy the correct uniform, wear it to the BOR and then sell the slightly used uniform to another like sized scout? Might be the best approach when all things are considered -
Secession? States actually threatening secession so the Ohio National Guard can square off against the Michigan National Guard? Is this the third world cartoon our politicians have degenerated to? Is it more important to pander to emotions than to get work done? What a bunch of files of the commercial grade of coarseness between coarse and second-cut

Flag Code and Decorum question
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Hal, when I was approached to be on the District Committee, I declined immediately as I knew my work committment would interfere with the meetings, the Chair, the same one we have now, said that I could come late, but he wanted my input when I was there. -
Can someone briefly explain Venturing to me?
OldGreyEagle replied to Liz's topic in Venturing Program
Just an Observation, if National is all confused and nothing can be trusted that comes from there ( and I don't)how much less certain is information that does not come from the center of scouting? Is not all information regarding any program just hear se at the moment?
