Ewe think this is easy? I always have a hard time with the words effect and affect. What effect on his affect will the elections effect? Would a more positive affect effect the way we are viewed? English is one tough language Imagine if you were given the job to write the right rite for the induction of a wheelwright for the Freight Industry's Haul Hall of fame(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Are roundtables obsolete?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
lets see, from what I can tell the consenus is pretty much Roudntables serve no useful purpose, they are mostly a setting for the Wrong Type of Leader to show off, they are hard to do well, they actually are not required and its time for them to go , or be replaced with something else. Is that accurate? -
There, Their, They're Skeptic, Cause ewe had a bad day...

First to Pack ::bow:: For the Theodoric of York reference, well played! Next, Given the President, the Senate and the COngress a "normal" person is far more likley to routinely see the Congressianal Representative than the other two. The Public may have a COngressional office in the town they live, or relatively close by. They may have called the Rep on occasion and I can tell you from calling reps and senators, the congressional offices are a heck of a lot more responive than the senate. May have something to so with the 2 versus 6 year term. The Rep from the area I live is a Republican but he is seen as more a Rep for the area. He does his job, brings in the Pork, which around here is thought of as "our Due", see other areas get Pork, we get our due. He runs against another candidate each election and severly trounces them not because he is Republican, but because he is an OK guy who represents us well. Was not the COngress overwelingly democratic for decades until Newt Gingrich and the COntract for America? Republicans got in and as long as a Congressman keeps his constituency happy, I am not sure Party matters that much

What was the final result of the popular vote? I see it as President Obama got 50% and, Mr Romney got 48%. A 2% margin is not exactly a mandate from the people for anything. What is says is the country is pretty much halved in how they view the issues which not exactly a reason for chaning core beliefs. I am not sure I want to be part of an Organization that says because 2% more of the Country voted for President Obama we will be chaning one of our core beliefs we once went to the Supreme Court to defend.

and now for something completely different Ideas for Republicans? I have a few Don't have your Nominee say he will repeal Obamacare, or anything else for that matter without having a plan that will replace it. I think Obamacare is seriously flawed, but just to repeal it and stay with the status quo is not tenable. By now the Republicans should have been able to come up with an alternative. Dont worry about "reaching out" to Latino's Black Americans, Women or any other group. Craft a message to Americans that explains the whys and hows of your policies and how they benefit everyone. And if they don't benefit everyone, then they should not be polcies, N'cest Pas?

Its my fault, I was being obtuse and obscure The quote was somehting President Obama said about people standing in line for hours to vote. I say its not up to the Federal Government to set up elections. That is the local government's job. Each local area has to look at its resources and decide how it wants to set up its voting procedure, how many Booths/Devices they want and what method. From paper to punch cards (Although the sprectre of the hanging chad probably kills that option)to various electronic methods its up to the locals to decide how to vote.

Sometimes Scouting volunteers really bug me...
OldGreyEagle replied to Backroads's topic in Council Relations
Mr Roads, I see you are in Logan, Utah. I was there about 10 years ago and found the best name for a Fossil Shop ever, it was called "Remains to be Seen", always thought that was the best name of a store I ever saw. I bought something just for the bag. Is it still there? And I don't know how gently to ask you this, so I shall just plow on. Do you know if the units who cannot just seem to get paperwork in are LDS units who have leaders who get "called" to be leaders and the ones who get paperwork in are the units with leaders who have volunteered for their positions? -

First perhaps we need to define our terms, from MacScouter who says: If you are paid to do Scouting, you are called a Professional. If you are not paid to do Scouting, you are called a Volunteer. If you pay to do Scouting, you are called... ... A Scouter So, you love people, its the public you can't stand? Other than saying, we can only process the paperwork we receive, I don't know as there will ever be a solution -
I thought all elections are local elections. They are run on the most rudiementary local basis possible, wards in the city and districts in the more rural areas or whatever terminology that the local area uses, like parishes in Louisiana As far as I understand it, whehter an election is local or national, the people running it are the same. Is that wrong?

One of the most common complaints I hear is "Council Lost it" when it comes to missing paperwork. I know I have taken forms to the Council Office and that form ends up "missing" to the point I always keep a copy so when Council tells me they cant find it, I can send them another. I don't know why, it happens. If you want to decrease the "sceamers" see if you can gain the reputation that your office never loses anything. It may be impossible to please everyone, but if enough people know that COuncil doesnt automatically lose paperwork as a matter of course, you may earn yourseld a pass. So, Someties Scouting Professionals really bug me ... is this the beginning of a vicious cycle? -
Remember they were talking about the election results and something racist was said, I guess whehther Adolph Rupp said it or not is actually of little consequence, it was a racist slur against the President and all Black Americans and I said nothing. It was loud enough for anyone close to hear and I said nothing. I regret that now

"That and the youth-led model sounds very intimidating to Sr. High women" See, I have evidence to the complete contrary, in my experience the young ladies of the Crew are the most dynamic, currently the Area Venturing President is female The National Venturing President is Male and then 3 of the 4 Regional Presidents are Female. I am opposed to females being youth members of the OA because in 4 years I think the entire national leadership will be female. I thnk Venturing plays into the more mature nature of teen age girls relative to boys. THen again, that is my experience, it may not be this way everywhere

I don't hold out much hope for the Llama thing but while reading the Political Trends thread I saw an ad for "Tea 101" held by "the republic of tea" a mail order/website tea warehouse. I guess the spiders read tea party and were thinking Mad Hatters not Mad Haters

So, I was at the Y this morning for my daily run. While dressing two guys next to be were discussing the election results. One guy referenced something University of Kentucky Basketball coach Adolph Rupp supposedly told his all white team after the 1966 NCAA Championship game won by Texas Western, which started 5 black players. Rupp was to have made some racially charged remark and Rupp himself was if not a racist bigot, he was definately a product of his era. The phrase attributed to Rupp is somehthing I wont try to paraphase, but it was pretty horrific and vulgar and as full from Scoutlike as can be. I researched today to see if I could verify that Rupp said anything like it and while I could not find the exact phrase, I did find some pretty close attributed to Rupp at various times. I see this guy nearly every time I go to the Y, he is a loud mouth braggart who always knows whats what and how any situation should be handled, but I really wrestled with telling him not to repeat such things in my prescence. If I don't say something, he could infer I agree and that is certianly not true. WHat would you do?

I would be very careful, not everyone has the style, verse or panache to wear a beret and do it well, those of us who have it, we few, we lucky few, we band of brothers are used to being mocked for having talents others only dream of

Not an Edison in the bunch, it can take awhile. Just a note, Just saw an Add "If the election were today, who would you vote for" Guess what it is today, I already voted and I voted for the guy best suited for the job who has the ability to lead the COuntry and do great things Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama Llama

As a practicing Roman Catholic (Yes I practice, just as Lawyers and Physicias do, nobody has it down yet) I keep getting told things about my faith. How the current Pope is going to nullify Vatican II, that the mass will revert from the Vulgate back to Latin. I hear about how nobody goes to church anymore and all that. Then I go to church and see the families there. The third Sunday of the month is Children's Liturgy and the youth from the School do the readings, serve the mass, act as ushers. The Mass is still in the Vulgate and Vatican II remains Life goes on Life will go on for the BSA as long as we, the members continue to deliver the program. The local area took quite a hit when that Teacher of the Year, revered Mentor and Camp School teacher blew his brains out on the eve of his child molestation trial, but we continue on. I do remember a sermon I heard one Sunday on heroes. And it does not take person to be in the military to be a hero, it does not tale someone to be a first responder, or Police or Fireman.(Make no mistake, they are heroes) Some of the finest heroes the country has are the men and women who get up everyday and provide for their families and do the things they love and beleive in. If we focus on that, it will be ok(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

I dont think the BSA is actively trying to kill Venturing, I think death by neglect is more accurate

It was Rudyard Kipling who gave us the following: "... If you can meet with triumph and diaster and treat those two imposter's just the same..." AND "...Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools" Anyone can support an organization in easy times, its in adversity that true character is revealed, what will such a revelation say about us?
