  1. Please please please, its not the sewing merit badge,it is the Tailoring Merit Badge
  2. I am surpised I beat Ed to this, How can wearing a uniform while traveling be a BSA requirement when there is no requirement that a boy must own a uniform? Now, I know there are loads of stories of wonderfully nice things that happen when a troop travels in uniforms and just that would be a good reason for doign so. I was struck by the comment that boys behave better in uniform. I happen to agree but werent we told recently that there was no proof that a uniform aids in the betterment of behavior? Yet what we experience when we travel in uniform seems like a pretty good lab experiment to me. Wear the uniform because you are proud to be a scout not because the rules say so
  3. How prescient are you? He wanted a letter from Norman Schwartzkopf and we got one Must every post be an attack?
  4. Sorry, I was too obtuse, for people who have gone to Philmont, does Philmont allow scouts to sleep alone in a tent or do they require the buddy system?
  5. You guys who have gone to Philmont, do they allow single scouts in a tent?
  6. For my son's Eagle Court of Honor I got letters from all the living presidents at the time, Ford, Carter, Bush 41 and 43 and Clinton. Reagan was alive at the time, but in late stages and I just couldnt bring myself to ask for one. Did he know who these guys were? Probably not, but when he has kids and shows them the Eagle Book with the letters, then these names he doesnt care about now will have significance. We are in the business of creating memories
  7. Back from Camp always goes too fast. 365 days until the first day of Camp Camp Minsi is where I live, the other 51 weeks I am in exile
  8. Lord Baden Powell was recorded as saying he wanted scouts to group up to be good citizens and good men I beleive the BSA still does that
  9. Oh, I can't stand the suspense, I hope it lasts
  10. I do not think the uniform drives kids away. I think the uniform is a soft target that can be blamed. Very few youth can stand the thought of being good, whether the term is "being square" "being a goody goody two shoes", or even the ever popular "What are you, a Boy Scout?" has never been exactly a compliment. Rather than change the uniform perhaps we should work on the culture's acceptance of who embrace the values of the scout oath and law as a life style? (gotcha didnt I no, I am not serious) If you have a good program and leaders who can impart they care, the uniform is not a big deal.
  11. Minor Hijack, speaking of current buzzwords When did it become in vogue to "reach out" to people instead of caling them on the phone, sending them an Email, talking to them in person or even (Horrors) sending them a snail mail? Next time I get advice to reach out to someone, I am going to remind them of what happened in that troop where Jack reached out once too often and was given a 365 day time out
  12. Ed, I understood my personal obligations and the requirements of my employer.
  13. Admitting everyone and not having a position on issues seems to describe Libertarianism pretty well A viewpoint that I have been increasing drawn too...
  14. Awhile back I had a part time job at a hosptial. I worked every Saturday and Sunday, I don't remember being asked if that was ok nor was I given time off to attend church services, but I manged to make Mass evey Sunday I worked
  15. What a bunch of whacky guys By the shores of old Stillwater, with its azure blue. Lies a camp of friendly Boy Scouts, cheerful, brave, and true. Sing her glories, live her ideals, hold her memories dear. Give a cheer that all may hear it; hail, all hail Minsi. Far away from care and turmoil, of the busy town. In a brotherhood of scouting, we will there be found. Sing her glories, live her ideals, hold her memories dear. Give a cheer that all may her it; hail, all hail Minsi.
  16. Just about to burst, off to Camp Minsi on Sunday, July 12th When I get off I380 at 940 I will be facing a choice, to the right is the Mount Airy Casino and the left, Camp Minsi. I will be turing left, but some may say that's a bigger gamble than going right. Just about done packing, just counting the hours, after all, Camp is where we live, the rest of the year is considered exile
  17. I just knew that resurrecting a thread after 7 years would not bode well... Of note is after the BSA realized the error of their ways, well, at least some of their way, Green Bar Bill was brought back to redo the redone, at least somewhat
  18. Tell you what, wait about a year, call Irving and ask to speak to someone about getting a replacment Eagle Certificate, and you will get one with Obama's signature. I know an adult who is in his 60's, has a "replacement" Eagle Certificate with every president's name since he received his rank. You pay for the certificate et al, but I thought it was an interesting idea
  19. Actually the neckerchief is the one thing that is iconic about international scouting. Uniform shirts or not, if you see a group of youth with a neckerchief, you know they are scouts
  20. f_cbb at some point you have to learn not to feed the machine GoldWinger, you must be proud, you have confused a youth Are we going to do this all over again?
  21. Just the sort of witty repartee that makes the internet a valuable source of amusement for oh so many. GoldWinger you haven't lost a step, f_cbb can't you tell when you are being baited? What has the rudiments, intricacies and arcaneness of High School football rules have to do with the topic at hand? Whether or not every boy is a leader, can we talk about that?
  22. I beleive you are right Ed, the ACLU is sorta like a Legal Aid Society, as long as you fall in the scope of their mission. And of course, their mission is to protect the Civil Liberties of all Americans. Lets say you think a publicly funded entity is denying you your Civil Rights. You could call the closest chapter of the ACLU, give them your story and see if they would represent you in the matter. It would be you bringing the case, but the ACLU would be doing the work. it may also be interesting that as far as I can tell, the ACLU has never decided a case, that is the purvey of the Bench. All the ACLU can do is represent a citizen brining forth a suit and force a decision, but the ACLU does not decide anything, its judge that has the final say so(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
