Well to be honest and truthful, there are already death panels operating in hospitals and in healthcare. Usually they are called Ethics Panels, but the result is the same. Lets say I need a heart transplant or I will die, I go on the heart transplant list, where I go on the list, towards the top or bottom depends on my condition and a few other factors. If my condition worsens maybe I go up, or I improve I go down. If I am subsequently found to have liver cancer, maybe I come off the list. These committees and similar ones to them make decisions every day with death as a possible outcome, thats not talked about.

definition of community service
OldGreyEagle replied to bearshark's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The School System I live in has set a requirement for high school graduation that the student do 100 hours of community service. If they do not do the service, they get a diploma in the mail at graduation, but they do not attend the graduation ceremony. Most scouts I know get to wear a silver cord on their mortarboard designating they have doubled the 100 hour requirement. Are you guys saying that since its a graduation requirement the scouts should not received credit for their service? That they choose either its for scouts or graduation? -
With the new season of Project Runway starting this Thursday, its too late to have them incldue design a new Uniform for Boy Scouts, but I wonder if Magic Elves productions would consider that for a future season? A few years back I suggested a Boy Life Contest, Design a new uniform, give them 6 months and then publish the top 10 designs and have scouts text or email their selection. The winner becomes the uniform What did B-P say about doing something a boy could do?

Time Warp alert... I remember back in the 70's when the ODL uniform was intrduced, no one in the Troop liked it eithr, it was differnt from the old one. No one like the 21rst Century Wood Badge curriculum either, because its different. Well, a few people say they do, its just because they don't understand, and if you don;t understand there is no point in explaining it to you. No one liked the addition to the First Class requirements that a scout had to invite a nonscout to a meeting and talk abotu scouting to them. No one likes the inclusion of EDGE into the rank requirements No one likes change yet nothing is permanet no wonder we are an unhappy lot(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Summer employment opportunities still open for Astroturf movement
OldGreyEagle replied to eisely's topic in Issues & Politics
I learned something about Insurance companies sorta second hand. My son had quite a few surgeries growing up; we often claimed half of Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) was built based on his bills. Once when he was in for an extended time, about 5 weeks, we got used to the routine of him getting a new room mate. He was in the bed by the window so they could bring the new ones in. He had been by himself for a few days when the level of activity increased by a bunch. They were bringing in a new patient, the boy was about 11-12 years old, he was the star pitcher of his baseball team and they were in the playoffs. He was pitching in a game, threw the ball and broke his arm. It was determined at the local hospital to be a pathological fracture, he had bone cancer and the motion of throwing the ball snapped his arm. The boy was brought to CHOP, was in surgery as they prepped the room having his right arm amputated above the fracture about mid humerus. (Upper arm). His parents were waiting in the room, obviously distraught. In walks the registration clerk. They had been taken the parents to the boys room and would register them there. The clerk got the demographics, and Insurance information and asked if they had insurance for prosthetics as the boy would need one and the Insurance Company would have to approve it and the clerk wanted to get the approval process underway as soon as possible, as she said you know how Insurance Companies are. The mother exploded. Now remember, there is only a thin curtain between me and this discussion, I may as well have been sitting next to them, well, I was. I wonder what HIPPA would say about this practice? Anyway, Turns out she was the Executive Secretary to the CEO of Highmark Blue Shield in Philadelphia and she told the clerk in no uncertain terms that if people understood their insurance, if they knew what they were and were not paying for, the world would be better. She went on for 10 minutes, which is a very long time, about how people want to pay as little as possible for insurance but then they want everything and a bag of doughnuts paid for when they are in the hospital. Make sure you know what your insurance covers and what it doesnt. Then again, Insurance Companies dont help themselves out PR wise much either, I am not defending them, just offering a point of view. -

In Radiology terms, an "abdomen" X-ray goes from the diaphragm to the symphysis pubis. In CT terms, an Abdomen scan goes from the diaphragm to the top of the pelvis. A pelvis CT goes from the top of the pelvis to the symphysis pubis. Confused/ I have done for 25 years and I still look it up routinely. BTW, Medicare pays the same for the Pelvis as it did for the Abdomen -
Need Ceremony for Adult leaders
OldGreyEagle replied to Lexington76's topic in Open Discussion - Program
If youth love ceremonies, this may be a way to cement in their minds who is who. This is for a new scoutmaster, although it obviously can work for any position. It invovles the SPL and names him as the leader os the troop Materials: Scoutmaster Handbook Scoutmaster badge of office Participants: Senior Patrol Leader Outgoing Scoutmaster (called Scoutmaster) Incoming Scoutmaster (called Scoutmaster Candidate) Chartered Organizational Representative or Head Troop Committee Chair (Special setup: Present Scoutmaster should have his or her badge of office loosely sewn on the left shoulder sleeve or attached using tape) The Troop Committee Chair asks for all members of the Troop to stand behind him or her. The Troop stands in a semi-circle behind the Troop Committee Chair. Troop Committee Chair: This evening marks another significant mark in the history of our Troop and this community; for tonight, as you are aware, we install a new Scoutmaster and say so long to our present Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster). Before I ask (name of Scoutmaster) to come forward, I would like to review what a Scoutmaster does. To provide this explanation, I now call upon the Leader of this Troop, (name of Senior Patrol Leader), the Senior Patrol Leader of our Troop. (Troop Committee Chair stands to side and allows Senior Patrol Leader to come center) Senior Patrol Leader: (name of Scoutmaster) works closely with me as I lead the Troop. As Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster) and I manage the program and he (she) insures that I get the training and coaching I need to do my job and to lead other boys in our Troop. (Name of Scoutmaster) also works with the Troop Committee Chair and members of our Troop Committee to insure that the proper support is given to whatever we as Troop leaders plan -- a campout, a day trip, or just a regular Troop meeting. The Scoutmaster is also the visual example for all of us here and works hard to insure that each Scout is guided in the direction toward Eagle and is making good progress toward his goal. (Senior Patrol Leader may address specific comments about Scoutmaster and wishes him or her well). Troop Committee Chair: At this time, I wish to call upon our Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster) to come forward. (Scoutmaster comes forward). We have enjoyed working with you over the period you have given to Scouting as Scoutmaster of this Troop. (at this time, various plaques, certificates or other items may be presented to the outgoing Scoutmaster and the Scoutmaster may make some remarks and comments about his or her service.) It now becomes time for us to appoint your successor and to induct him (her) as our new Scoutmaster. It gives me great honor to introduce (name of Scoutmaster candidate),our candidate for the position of Scoutmaster. (Scoutmaster candidate comes forward and stands on one side of Troop Committee Chair) Troop Committee Chair: It is the desire of this Troop's Chartering Organizatin to appoint you as Scoutmaster of Troop (number). As you have heard from our Senior Patrol Leader, you main job is to advise the Troop officers and assist in their training and coaching as they develop the Troop's program. We are placing the confidence of our families and our Scouts onto your shoulders as you continue to provide a quality program for our Scouts and this community. Will you accept our nomination and serve as Scoutmaster of this Troop? Scoutmaster Candidate: Yes, I will do my best. (The Senior Patrol Leader brings the Troop's flag forward and in front of the Troop Committee Chair. He then hands the flag to the Scoutmaster and then leaves. The Chartered Organizational Representative or Head comes forward and takes the place of the Senior Patrol Leader. The Scoutmaster then gives the flag to the Chartered Organizational Representative or Head as Troop Committee Chair states: The Scouting program is a part of the community service mission of (name of chartered organization). It is highly appropriate that the symbol of the Troop, the Troop's flag, be returned to the representative (head) of (name of chartered organization), because it is this organization that gives final approval to adults working with our youth. The Scoutmaster then removes his or her badge of office and hands it to the Chartered Organizational Representative (Head). The Chartered Organizational Representative or Head then invites the Scoutmaster candidate to place his or her left hand on the pole of the Troop's flag, above that of the Chartered Organizational Representative's hand. Chartered Organizational Representative or Head: Please raise your hand in the Sign of the Scout and repeat after the Troop Committee Chair. (Scoutmaster Candidate does so) Troop Committee Chair: (said to allow for repeating by Scoutmaster Candidate) I promise to do my best ---to be worthy of my office as Scoutmaster --- for the sake of my Scouts --- This Troop --- and the World Brotherhood of Scouting. this will probably be the first place to feature the new Coleman propane powered microwave oven... You know, does anybody remember the "oldman" charactor on Saturday Night Light, who would reminecse about life in the good ol' days and always end with "and we liked it?" I can ear him saying "Back in the ol days, we hiked 50 miles to camp, uphill at night to pitch camp in a blizzard then on Sunday we hiked another 50 miles uphill to the cars to put our stuff away in bare feet and we liked it" or "was I was a kid you had to go camping with heavy canvas equipment, ill fitting clothes, books that caused blisters and only a single tin cup to eat from, and we liked it" -
"Reading comprehension must not be your strong suit." Do you think you can post your thoughts without ad hominem comments?

so if you see a guy who is wearing make up, girls clothes and has a lisp (or any combination)you feel duty bound or honor bound or something to "take a shot"? What sort of shot? You would insult, berate, vex or otherwise annoy such a person as a matter of principal?

I am not sure what the uniform police would say, but how about making a button hole where there should be one? How much trouble can you get into for "altering" the uniform? -
Summer employment opportunities still open for Astroturf movement
OldGreyEagle replied to eisely's topic in Issues & Politics
The pricing structures of a hospital is about as arcane as it could be, I am not sure one could have come up with as complicated a system if they tried. Right now, the National Payment for an Abdomen CT with and without contrast is $340.96. Some hospital may get more, most less. If you know abybody who has had a CT, what were they charged? Medicare pays a Nationally $44.70 for a 2 view chest x-ray. How does that compare with charges you have seen? For Knee arthroscopy Medicare pays nationally $1,943.12. These are all outpatient amounts. For inpatients the reimbursement is different. The amount reimbursed is dependent on the discharge diagnosis. Say you have difficulty breathing and go to the hospital. After a week you get out and the doctor says you had Congestive Heart Failure but are fine now. The hospital gets a lump sum payment regardless of the number of tests they did or didnt do. Just like when you buy a car, the peole who pay sticker price aer being taken advantage of. -
Gee Nick when you say "Girl pants, skin tight shirt, "Kiss" Style leather belts and bracelets" all you have to do is add black eyeliner with a guy crying and you have a signature Emo band related: Why do you want to grow an Emo lawn? Because then it will cut itself(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

oddly enough I have cited the same site http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=245318#id_245544 what B-P says is a scout is not swanky, but he may be proud So, if the knots are worn because one is proud, then B-P says thats ok? I may be more in favor of the monochromatic tunic and pants so these things are not a distraction as I first was

Cardboard Boat Regatta at Camp Minsi
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Venturing Program
Google "Cardboard Boat Regatta" and you will get plenty of information of different events, building tips, etc. You can't build these in a day, and thats the point. The Regatta is more than the day of the race, its the planning, where to get the cardboard, where to build it, how do we build it and get it to the race, what do we do with it after the race. Its about who decides what shape it will take, what color? we had awards for the best theme, best decorated and best over all time. It is a huge team building excerise disguised as fun and its a blast. How far from Chester SC are you? -
Just when I think the red beret issue has gone away, they keep pulling it back in. I thought the red beret was the coolest head gear ever put out by the BSA, it takes a certain panache, savoir faire and self confidence to wear one corectly, but leading, cutting edge fashion is not for the faint of heart. I can tell you what is for the faint of heart, insulting people for their sexual orientation

as long as the hash is left out... I would like to see the headlines, Brownie escorted out of Boy Scout function... Have her wear it

lets try http://www.mcall.com/all-5boat-081509-pg,0,2507031.photogallery If this doesnt work, copy the line and put it in your browser As the saying goes, I didnt have a horse, or boat, in the race. Then again, I was the event chair and spent my time on the boat dock getting the boats in the water and cheering them on. They had to go out about 100 yards, turn around a buoy and come back and touch the dock. It was Area 5, Northeast region's event I wore the event t-Shirt at the regatta. In the afternoon, the Area 5 Venturing Committee was formed and I wore my Venturing Field uniform there. After dinner, Amy Clark, Northeast Region Venturing President assisted the youth in forming the Area 5 Ventring Officers Association. I was leading a Leaders Forum. (This message has been edited by OldGreyeagle) -
Heck thats easy, drop the uniform for both youth and adults

SO, I earned the Arrow of Light and Eagle and the Ad Altare Dei (Catholic Award) as a youth. SO, I have one row filled with youth knots. I have the Council Venturing Leadership Award because the Crew I serve nominated me. I have the District Award of merit because a person I didnt know that well thought I should be recognized, I have the Silver Beaver because 2 people thought I deserved it. I have an Adult religious award as an adult because I was nominated by someone who thought I deserved it. Which knots shouldn't I wear?

Does anybody remember what happened to the prodigal son? Was he turned away for his inactivity in the family business or was his return joyously celebrated?

http://www.mcall.com/all-5boat-081509-pg,0,2507031.photogallery 14 boats competed, only one did not complete the course. Crews from Northeastern PA and New Jersey competed. We were visited by Amy Clark, Northeast Region Venturing President. A good time was had by all

Would it be better if we all dresed in monochromatic grey tunics and pants? Marched in formation and recited the same chant as to not show any individuality? Then one day a cute girl in bright orange shorts and a white top can come running up and use a hammer to smach the notion of conformity

I htink Arlen Specter got it right when he said after his contentious Town Hall meeting that there was a lot of anger out there. Yes, there is Maybe its time to have a collective national day of breath taking and everyone agree to start over, yeah I know, I can dream but I am not so sure the anger being expressed is all health care driven. It's fallout from the Wall Street bail out, the Auto bail out and now redoing healthcare all at once. Can we go slow? is that too much to ask or are we doomed to arguments that pretty much come down to "my sides may suck, but not as much as yours"?
