Then again, this could all be preparation for when the Boy Scout program goes Co-Ed in which case girls would be at NYLT. I wonder if there will be a POR patch for Quartermistress? I gotta get one of those

T259Eagle, I don't know if this will be of comfort for you, but I often have no idea of what Beavah is talking about. I frequently call upon him to clarify what he means. I think his style can be quite confusing, but of all the things I have accused him of, either in public or private, being one who insults and belittles others is not his style. (unless of course its me because I swear that boy has it out for me). Beavah does not make suggestions without having what he determines to be adequate facts, so I do not think he meant any disrespect, its just the way he communicates.

What is a certified BSA firearms instructor
OldGreyEagle replied to wecamp4fun's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Not to pick nits, but what the hey, the Guide to Safe Scouting says this about Boy Scouts and Rifles: All rifle shooting activities must be supervised by a currently NRA -certified Rifle Instructor and when on the range, must be supervised by a currently NRA-certified Range Safety Officer. The same rules apply to shotgun, Muzzleloaders and in Venturing Handguns. In the G2SS there is no wriggle room about having a Military or Police Range Officer rather than an NRA certified Range Safety Officer. I am not saying they wouldnt have the skills, but they arent listed in G2SS. Do the Camp standards make such allowances? It would help if all shooting regulations were in one spot, "To sleep, perchance to dream-" -
What is a certified BSA firearms instructor
OldGreyEagle replied to wecamp4fun's topic in Open Discussion - Program
From what it costs in my area for a single NRA certificate, I got Rifle, Shotgun, and Muzzleloading along with Archery in a single week at the cost of about 1.5 certificates tuition, plus I spent a week at camp. I didn't see it as a waste of time or money. I had a blast and remember it fondly. Others may not have seen it that way, its why BAskin Robbins has more than one flavor One of the Councils I helped at required the Venturing Committee to have a Camp School qualified Shooting Sports Director on site or they couldnt use the Camps Range or Rifles, my certificate has allowed them to run shooting events for a few years now. The Council may be wrong, but who wants to wage war with a council over BSA policy? How does that generally work out? In the Guide to SAfe Scouting it says to do shooting, whether Rifle, Shotgun Muzzle loading or Pistol (Venuring only of course) you must have an NRA instructor and a Range Safey Officer. So, you need two certifcations, debates rage if one person can perform both duties(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
You could always tell the Disitrct Commissioner guy he is right, you are worthless and will be expecting him to pick up your slack as you are resigning in disgrace OK, I had to say that. There will always be those who want you to do it the way they want done and harp on it forever, I have no advice as to how to inure yourself to such behavior, but it happens. What was it that has been attributed to Davey Crockett? "BE SURE YOU'RE RIGHT, THEN GO AHEAD" I think you did good, if you double think every decision, you never get anywhere

So what arbitrary rules do you enforce?
OldGreyEagle replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Realizing that all rules, arbitrary or otherwise always come about because of something(s) that occured, I leave you the troops I serve best rule with a back story, although you can pretty well figure out why it was implemented The height of the campfire cannot exceed the diameter of the fire circle in which it is burning -
Transfering scouts and leadership positions..
OldGreyEagle replied to bearshark's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So what we are saying is that its a good idea to get a handle on a relative newcomers attitide and skills and wait to see what sort of record he establishes before allowing to have a Position of Responsibility in a Troop. The Troop needs to see what sort of charactor he has, how he works in crisis and who his friends are I think it makes sense -
See now, I thought the directions were mighty clear but perhaps they are not No more voting comments from me

"there is no voting in the BSA, well voting to "elect" adult unit positions at least." Well, at least I know I am "folks" and I guess that is something, but "folks" didn't write this quote, I did. Now, let's make sure we know what we are talking about. I am talking about the selection of adult leaders and nothing else. That is what the "voting to "elect" adult unit positions at least." part was about. Perhaps the humor escaped some, perhaps it wasn't funny. But I am talking about selecting adult leaders and perhaps I wasn't clear. Boy voting did cross my mind, thats why I said "adult unit leaders" but perhaps I need to parse things better so I don't confuse those who are easily confused. The BSA has two publications on how to select adult leaders, they maybe found at: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/510-500.pdf http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/18-981.pdf The published steps are: Chartered Organization Briefing Steering Committee Meeting Make an Appointment with the Prospect Call On the Prospect Have the Prospect Complete a Membership Application Welcome the New Leader Fast Start Training Nowhere is there a reference to voting. That was the foundation for my comment. Do some units have votes to select adult leadership? I am certain, do some units require 80 percent Troop meeting attendnace and 75 percent outing attedance to qualify for Scouting Spirit or other such permutation (meaning the 80 and 75 percent numbers may be something else) I am sure Does this answer the question on needing a reference?

Way back when our Venture Crew started, we were green, so green we didnt even know it was a Venturing Crew (fooled yeah!) Whenever Crews Adults would get together we would always talk about how to make happen what the youth wanted to do. And shooting was always part of the deal. But we couldnt have a shooting event at a Council Camp unless someone was qualified, and we never seemed to have any one qualified, the Camp Rangemaster's always out of reach or off at collge or something. SO, 5 years ago I ended up talking to our Scout Executive and I went to Camp School and became a Shooting Sports Director, with NRA credentials in Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, (I payed for it myself) and then picked up Range SAfety Officier at my SHooting Sports Recertification class this past April (Camp School is only good for 5 years) and the first week end of Octoberm the Northeast Region ran a Pistol Instructor Class (NRA of course) and I attended that as well. The Camp School system has no problem with non-camp staff and self-paid students, Councils, of course, being independent may have other policies. I now supervise shooting sports at many Venturing events in and out of the COuncil I serve -
I have to echo BDP, just as there is no crying in baseball, unless you are a Chicago Cubs fan, 100 years or so and counting, there is no voting in the BSA, well voting to "elect" adult unit positions at least. But that's not the issue here. Your son and your relationship with him are what is the issue. Your role as Cubmaster may be pivotal in what your younger son chooses. if you aren't the Cubmaster, then that lengthens the odds he will stay, or not as we don't know your son. Sit down, give it to God, listen to what he has to say and follow it

I am not sure how to do this without sounding like a real cretin, so I shall step out where angels fear to tread. The date on which a scout turns 18 is well know to them when they join the program. The Advancement program of the Boy Scout Program ends at 18. As the 18th birthday did not sneak up on anyone, everyone has the same opportunity to earn Eagle and wear the rank patch before their 18th birthday. Yes, if you get your paperwork in just before the 18th birthday, the Eagle Board of Review may be done afterward, but the scout doesnt get to wear the rank patch because they are no longer a scout. Now, as mentioned, if a 18+ wears the Eagle patch on their Court of Honor day is it wrong? I wouldn't say anything

New subject - moral hazard and pre existing conditions
OldGreyEagle replied to eisely's topic in Issues & Politics
Sorry I am late to the party, so if I rehash stuff already hashed, well, it will be rehashed. About the Pre-exisiting conditions and the auto example, so what we are saying is if I buy a car with a smashed fender, the Car Insurance company is supposde to pay to have it fixed as soon as I make a single payment on the Insurance Policy? We keep talking about health care like its provided on every street corner (in some places, it may be) but its always provided by individuals who are free (currently) to choose their patients. Many physicians do not take Medicaid or Medicare patients or only a limited number. Will legislation "force" Medical practitioners to take on clients they would prefer not to? Is the Government dictating to an industry the clients they will take on a good precedent? Ok, Hospitals through their Emergency Rooms provide care to all who present, is this the best way to provide care? My wife just had two knees replaced, she had the work done in essentially a "private hospital", a 20 bed hospital that the physician group who did the surgery owns. The care was top notch and the setting wonderful. I know no Medicare or Medicaid paients are done there, the "regular" hospitals get these patients from that group. Is this fair? The orginal Health Care "reform", Which shifted from Health Care reform to Health Insurance Reform to other titles has changed. What is the current form now? It was a 1,000 page document, what is it now and where can it be found? Legislative Language is so confusing, think a Law that says all legislatin is to be written at a 6th grade level (purportedly what we graduate most High Scholl Seniors at) would work, How about 12th grade? Why have Legislators say they can't read the laws they pass? Shouldn't they sign an oath affirming they have read and understood the Legislation? Would that not be an expectation of the job? To know what they are voting for, or against? Was off most of last week driving my father from Maine to Chicago (was supposed to be Arkansas, but he threw us a curve ball) spent a few days in Chicago visiting old haunts. The Seminary just seems like such a sad building these days. The Diocese uses it for office space, but the building was built to prepare men for the priesthood and now its just office space, the places oozes disappointment -
I always thought First Class First Year was more about a Troop's committment to have a program designed so that if a scout was active, and wanted to earn first class in a year, he could do so. There is nothing about first class first year that says a scout doesn't have to have knot tieing or cooking skills. If a unit rushes a scout through the requirements and does not allow the scout to learn and retain and use those skills, I am not sure the BSA could be held responsible. If a scout doesn't know his knots, then he doesnt know them and he needs to learn them and nothing in First Class First year says he should ge them signed off, or any other requirement First Class First year is about the unit's Program, not about a unit loosley signing off requirements.

To build on what Gern said What is Beauty? How is it defined, does it exist? What is Courage, Bravery, Passion Do these things exist? DO "experts" agree what defines them?

In my area, Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia, I have seen multiple TV commercials based on a "Be a Scout" theme, some showing only Cub Scouts and others with all prgrams represented. Then over the weekend in Conn. I saw some Be a Scout billboards as well. Anyone else notice such things?

I love the classics, and for good reason, they are such Classics. That being said, the Leatherstocking Tales takes a look at a virtuous charactor throughout his entire life and mixes in quite the adventure as well. I read then in junior High Demian by Hermann Hesse was quite the comfort to me in High School, I thought I was the only one who felt the way I did and when I read Demian, I could just see Hesse as an older German man sitting in the corner of my room talking directly to me and it gacve me comfort. I then went on to read Narcissus and Goldmund, quite the literal book if one is in the seminary when one reads it. I read the rest of Hesse, which would have to be a matter of personal taste, although the sequence in Steppenwolf where Harry goes in the door marked "For Mad Men only" is spectacular. For adults, The Red and the Black by Stendhal gives a riveting course on the importance of appearance for appearance sake. It also gave me the answer as to why anyone would be against democracy, something I couldnt understand until I read the book

I ahev an issue with including Sociel Security in with the term "Entitlement", I know it may be semantics and I would never want to be known as anti-semantical, but I see entitlements as something people "get" from the government because they are in a specific category. I have been paying into Social Security for quite a few decades now, as have many. I don't see that money as an entitlement, I see it as mine. Then again, I could be wrong. BTW, out of the list that Pack gave us, didnt the President, while on the campaign trail, have solutions for most if not all these ills? Can't he just put into place the solutions that he promised?

perhaps the IOC considered the impassioned plea from the Rio contingent that while North America, Asia and Europe had hosted multiple games, the South American continent had never hosted an Olympics (heck even Australia has)and the bid from Rio showed that it was time. no subterfuge, no bribes, nothing more than South America being ready. The selection of the Olympic games is much like the scoring of gymnastics, subjective, and the cities know that going in.

What I said was if you want to talk pies, explain why the pie talk is being tossed about. Here I think I understand Lisa Bob's reference. Rape is Rape in any country and whether a child or adult says no to sex, it means no

What is the most dated scouting skill requirement?

Oh? In the black era of scouting, started when I aged out as a youth and lasted until I got back in as a father (or sometime roughly around then) -

First, Adam, welcome, second when was First Aid merit badge EVER (emphasis here) required for First Class? Plenty of First Aid requirements exist to get to first class, but the First Aid merit badge? Not ever as far as I know. -
Lets see, he was convicted, his accuser described what he did to her and he admitted it. What does his marital status at the time have to do with this?
