  1. First, and only because Mike started it Christmas is a contracted phrase, the compelte sentence is "Christ's Mass". The expression Good-Bye is a contracted phrase as well, it's from "May God be with you". Related, Santa Claus is a contracted phrase from Saint Nicholas. I always thought that the "Keep Christ in Christmas" crowd only had it half right. Unless you plan on attending Mass on Demcember 25th, the Phrase "Merry Chirstmas" rings a tad hollow. You can't base a media campaign on half a word/phrase ignoring the other half. Then again, in our culture many times words become associated with meanings not originally intended. AstroTurf is a brand name which is accepted generically for any artificial turf surface, there are several such examples, Brillo pads, BVD's, Chapstick, Dixie Cups and perhaps its time to accept Chistmas as another victim to proprietary eponymism The exact date is not important. Easter, which actually is the most sacred Chirstiam Holiday, is a movable feast. It's not the date that is important. Its the celebration of the event. Its the time to relect on the event's meaning in our lives. Our society has deemed December 25th as the date to celebrate Chirst's birth. That alone, God became man, is worth celebrating and a whole dose of wonder. Born to die for our salvation. That is worth remembering, at least once a year if not every day. The commercial appeal of Christmas? I will settle back to work with my wite-out, wiffle ball, thermos, TV Dinner, Q-Tip, Pop Tart and magic marker and think about what words should mean and how they are used and how baaaad is that?
  2. OK, Nov 22, 2012 was Thanksgiving, but it was also 49 years since JFK was shot in Dallas. What do we know about that event 49 years later? Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone? Why did Jack Ruby think it important to kill Oswald What about Magic, hovering bullets, who was behind it if Oswald did not act alone Wasnt some records supposed to be revealed in 50 years after the Warren COmmisions report? What happened?
  3. "Perhaps PETA should be out there gently keeping the wildlife from crossing the road" Now SP, take it easy, PETA will never do that, move to outlaw motorized vehicles, now that they would do ...
  4. I guess it depends on why the leaders are being counted. If your district has 35 "District" positions that are filled by 20 adults, that is not the same as having 35 positions filled by 35 people. If there were 300 adults serving 1500 (made up numbers, don't kill me over it) and now 100 adults serve 1400, its makes a difference
  5. What happened anyway? A District Volunteer and his son did what?
  6. So, ask a child of Divorce why he/she is afraid of marriage and it could take awhile... And how many marriages have ended in Divorce? And we wonder?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. "moral gay man" I thought that was the issue, that gay men could not be moral, or moral enough at the very least "But let's go down being true to the code we grew on." I got my Eagle in 1969,I was not aware gays could not be in scouts or a scouter back then. Perhaps it was implied but I missed it.
  8. BD, your stories fascinate me, on the Eagle Workbook page 10 there is a space for Council or District Approval. Are you saying this is not signed for your Eagle candidates? And the Eagle Board of Review, only Troop level people attend? No Rep from either the District or Council? I don't doubt what you say, I keep getting told how if the project isnt District or COuncil approved, it is not going to count. Same thing with the Eagle Board of Review. I find the difference between what we get told and what happens astounding(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  9. As I was formulating my resonse to SP, it occurred to me. I start this thread about eliminating the Electoral COllge, and then get indignant when someone mentions changing the length of a judicial appointment I guess I just reaffirmed my humanity, I am inconsistent
  10. SP I think the lifetime appointments means that the judges don't have to worry about fluctuations in the political environment and are able to decide issues based on their understanding of the Law. As it is with any human system, I would not appreciate a Judge whose values can be swayed by popular thought We often hear people decrying the lack of Statesmen in politics. Those who took a stand because they beleived in it, not because it was politically expedient. WIll we have the same result in the Judiciary? Or do we not trust people to do things they have been doing since the COuntry started?
  11. So, if you retire to South America, you can open a Llama farm and breed llamas for both food and wool. Llama make excellent pack animals as well. Once you have a Llama, you wont go back
  12. "Terminate the pregnancy" another euphemism for murder, but ok
  13. agree, Bush did not have a mandate either, something about winning an election makes some feel so powerful and not bothering to check on the losers, or in PC terms "they who did not win". Anyway, to be technical the thing used to acquire an Ultrssound, or Sonographic image is a transducer and for OB-Gyn they may be used either transabdominally or transvaginally. The transvaginal transducer is more sensitive so it will detect a new life much earlier than the abdominal approach I thought that which was most objectionable was the requirement of the Sonographer to show the abortion minded patient a picture of the baby she is contemplating killing. I do understand that would be indeed traumatic
  14. WasE61 thats the point, the time to change the Electoral College is not when the Popular Vote winner is not the president (see Al Gore) but when there is no issue. Then it is not seen as sour grapes.
  15. So, is it? Has the Electoral College seen its time come and gone? Do we still need to send educated trusted representatives to DC to elect our President or are we ready for a Constitutional Amendment to elect the President by Popular Vote or at the very least apportion electoral votes by popular vote results. Shouldn't we be working on this or will it take a disputged election? Maybe we could work on this from our ownb states, what do you think?
  16. Well, apparently 48% of people don't share the "majority" viewpoint. Thats not exactly an overwelming mandate. Having said that, have the secessionates , Johnny Rebs, I'll call them really thought it thorugh? No, not likley. Beats being told the President was born in Kenya you must admit
  17. Lets be clear, Paul Reubens (AKA Pee Wee Herman) was not ever charged with abusing children, himself is a different story Not sure what his name is doing here
  18. Didn't a group of states try seceeding before? How did that work out, talk about not learning from hisotry Actually, even if the BSA was in the Republic Of Texas, does that mean they can't work in the USA? Don't we have conpanies who do business in the US who have "international" headquarters?
  19. In his heart LBJ knew ol' Barry was right, because almost as soon as LBJ was elected, LBJ did what Barry said he would do, and was not elected because he said it AUH20, loved it!
  20. we should distinguish amoung the various vocabulary ills of which we speak. There is the story of the Heir to the largest Hare farm in all of Texas who due to chemotherapy had no hair Or is that neither hear nor their? I meant here nor they're I mean........ oh forget it(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  21. Its been how long since Obamacare was passed? And during the elections Romeny said he would repeal Obamacare, and I kept waiting for the second part, I will replace Obamacare with Romneycare and its better because... And nothing save the crickets chirping in the still of the night Health Care financing could not be more convoluted if we tried to make it the most covoluted system. Soemthing needed to be done. Obamacare is not the answer, but then again, you can't keep on saying something sucks and then have no alternative
  22. Just a note of correction, if one examines TV families of the 50's and 60's one will find the Nelsens, Ozzie and Harriet, the Cleavers, Ward and June but I am unaware of any Reeds. Now, there was the Donna Reed show in which she played Donna Stone, the wife of Pediatrician Dr Alex Stone. And while they were only set in 50's and eventually the 60's let us not forget the most wholesome of all families, Milwaukee's own Cunningham family with Howard, Marion, Ritchie, Joannie and Chuck. Yes, there was a third sibling, Chuck(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)
