Looking at the BSA from the outside.

So if a scoutmaster does not evaluate out well, then what happens? There is no such evaluation system in the US, the Chartering Organization is responsible for the scoutmasters evaluation or lack there of -

Hilo, are you saying that volunteers, above the unit level, evaluate the work that a unit level volunteer has done? -
Wait, you mean a capote is not supposed to have fringe on it? I used this for my directions: http://www.inquiry.net/OUTDOOR/WINTER/GEAR/CAPOTE.HTM It shows fringe on the shoulder and the top of the hood, are you saying this is not accurate?

So we are ok with the Crew having adults who do not know the program nor do they wish to know the program? CNY, what if you walk away from this Crew? I wouldnt blame you
-
If no one is trained, and you get the feeling they don't see the value of the scouting program, why is there a Crew? What did I miss? I applaud your efforts, looks like a tough row to hoe

The Council I serve has had manditory Training for quite some time, as far as I know, the Council only lost one unit because of the requirements. I do not know how many leaders were dropped because they did not get trained, I know of none, but I don't claim to know every one. The Council did have to overhaul its training recording and District Training Committees. It takes a concerted effort by many scouters to make manditory training work. From the beginning, manditory trainig was presented and talked about as a positive. It can work well. Will it work well everywhere? I don't know, but at least I can tell you it went well in one Council

BSA Float in the Tournament of Roses Parade
OldGreyEagle posted a topic in Open Discussion - Program
I thought it was great the BSA had a float in the Rose Parade, especially the Zip Line featuring Venturers. The ABC announcers kep talking about Boy Scouts while a camera was trained on a female Venturer poised on a mountain bike. Would have been fun for them to mention that. Anyway, the BSA float won the National Award and its nice to see the BSA do something in the Rose parade to start out the 100th year -
OK, I split this off so as not to confuse the original thread. I have never seen the abbreviation POR (Position of Responsibility) used for anything but Scout Advancement, another poster says POR can be used for adult positions, I have been wrong before, and most likely will be wrong again, but does anyone have a reference on this? I have only seen POR in reference to youth, is POR ever used in reference to adults?
-
I am not trying to be difficult, but as many people new to scouting read these pages, I want to point out something. The COR (Chartering Organization Representative) is not an POR (Position of Responsibility) a POR is a requirement for a youth to hold to be eligible for advancement to the ranks of Star, Life and Eagle. The Charter Organization Representative is an adult position within the BSA, not a youth position.

I thought we were suppsoed to be teaching the youth to respect those in authority and not teach them how to play games with adherence to the rules

2010 Scout Weight Restrictions
OldGreyEagle replied to upnorthmn's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I was always given to understand that most of the time weght restrictions were based on evacuation equipment limitations and not on the supposed health of the individual. The 330 lbs totally fit guy who busts an ankle is out of luck when the helio stretcher says 300 lbs is the limit. Sometimes its not about how healthy you are, its the equipment limitations -
Anyone who laughs at a Boy Scout playing a flute must not have heard of Ian Anderson, he turned it into a Rock and Roll icon

OK, we have identified the root issue, Chunky adults who want to reminesce about their experiences in Scouting much as Golden Domers reminesce about their Old Glory days and want them back. So. now, what is the plan? If all the chunky, rules spouting, uniform policing nit-wits said in a collective voice, hey that Scouter Forum bunch is right, we are the road blocks to BSA success, we are out of here, what would happen? Given that doesnt happen, how do such people get replaced or have their eyes opened?
-
OK, I will play along If I were to see a member of the troop, kissing his "boyfriend" at a football game or other place, I can tell you what I would plan to do. First of all, I would not go running to the Scoutmaster or Committee Chair. I would talk to the boy, tell him what I saw and ask him what is going on. He may have lost a bet with a friend, it may have been a prank, then again it may not be. If he said he had homosexual feelings, I would ask him if he had talked to anyone about it if anyone. I know I am not qualified to discuss such things with a youth, but I know a few people who are. I would help him arrange an appointment with one of them. If he decides he is indeed gay, then we would have a discussion on what that means. I would not being the one running off to snitch on the scout, the scout would tell the Committee Chair himself, with me present if he wanted. Oh and by the way, all such discussions would be done in accordance with Youth protection Guidelines and in public view

Gosh oh Golly Beavah, GHB asked twice for dates as he was assembling a timeline, I gave him dates based on my experiences, I am not stuck in the 60's (or I am). But in this case, the 60's reference was in direct answer to a direct question from a poster.

Right you are Oak Tree, I believe Whitey told his father he didnt want to join no "dasiy pickin' mamma's boys" And that would have been mid 20's. After all by WWII Whitey is a physician in the Army. When was the last time the epithet, " you are such a Boy Scout" was hurled as a compliment? A person acting with integrity may be asked, "why are you being such a boy scout?" After the 1968 Democratic Convention, the Troop of my youth (Located in the Northwestern Suburbs of Chicago) did not wear our uniforms to anything but Courts of Honor for about 18 months. It wasn't worth the anticipated beatings that would have been handed out by the "hippies" (funny I thought Hippies were peace loving)I remember a Fall Camporee in 1969 at Salt Creek Park in Dupage County, Ill. where the adults had the older boys patroling the borders of the campsites because the hippies were supposed to raid us. When pop culture worships "bad boys" and Anti-heroes, why would anyone want to be seen as a 'goody goody two shoes? How many teen age girls were shown in the movies and songs of the late 50's and 60's as getting weak in the knees over a youth trying to be a solid citizen versus the "Leader of the pack" type? If the only James Dean would have been a "Rebel with a Cause": that to make Eagle, perhaps things would be different. If you are looking at a time line. Look at the 60's. When the 60's started pro football was as conservative as it could get. But by '69 Broadway Joe reigned supreme, the ultimate "bad boy" of sport, and hero to many youths of the time

Good Question LS From what I understand, the idea is that when people drive in Caravan, or Convoy, there is a thought that they must stay in line and will do "dangerous" things to stay in line, such as run stop lights and such. Telling a driver, don't worry about directions, we will be in a caravan may result in a driver who isnt sure of the destination who then does crazy stuff to stay behind the car in front of him. Leastwise thats what I was told when I asked

You can PM the Moderators and let us know of the issue. Moderstors have an * at the end of their name, like mine will. I have to say that we let the Politics section go pretty much, the rest not so much. I can't say I look overthing closely so please let me know you issues

You will not find a reference that a Co-Ed Crew needs a Co-Ed Adult Leadership team because it does not exist. Well, let me say I have looked and looked and have not found anything other than the odd quote from "thems who are supposed to know", that a Co-ed Crew needs Co-Ed adult leadership. Of course on overnights you do need to follow the G2SS but as far as adult leadership goes, no Co-Ed requiretment may be found Would welcome any proof otherwise

being only able to speak about things from my own experience and where I live, if a scout was seen kissing his boyfriend at the football game, or any place else, having me see them would be the absolute least thing they would have to worry about.

OK, I have blinders on, but here goes anyway I do not want a Homosexual Scout in the troop I serve, nor do I want a Heterosexual Scout in the Troop I serve (unless he is married of course). I do not view the scouts I serve as sexual beings, yes, I know some of them are, but I think I would react the same way if I came upon a scout reveling in his description of his latest seduction, be the seductee male or female. Its ok if a scout has heterosexual sex (outside of marriage) but not if its homosexual sex? There are no gay scouts, there are no straight scouts, there are only scouts

So, I have a question to the Boy Scout historians out there, I seem to remember something about Baden-Powell speaking of the Religion of the Outdoors, or something like that. Does that sound familair to any of you?

Ask the Expert: The BSA’s ‘active’ requirement
OldGreyEagle replied to AlFansome's topic in Advancement Resources
National should want to be bad guys? Oh wait, they already are ... -
What would be your definition of Active?
OldGreyEagle replied to Oak Tree's topic in Advancement Resources
To be fair, should we not also look at Scouts who earn a rank and then go MIA? Say you have a real go getter scout, makes First Class in less than a year, then makes Eagle at 14 years and 6 months. At his Eagle Court of Honor reception he is heard to say, Boy am I glad that is over, Scouts is so lame, I only did this because my father wanted me to, leaves the building and is never seen again. He was active at the time he was in scouts, but once he gets Eagle, he leaves and is never seen again, should there not be recourse against doing this? I think a scout who gets Eagle should get it only on a probationary status and must stay active (according to the Troop) for an additional 12 months before he gets it awarded "permanently"!(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
May I ask what the interest is in what the alleged perpertrator looks like and on what grounds would we be doing any investigating on an incident far far far from home?
