I have a Court of Honor Resource book I put together for a Wood Badge ticket item. It has ideas for Courts of Honors, Eagle COH scripts as well as ceremonies for Inducting SPL. PL's etc. I used to say PM me with your Email address and I will send it to you but it appears the PM function is not at all what it should be. (This message has been edited by a staff member.)

Wow, I guess you CAN have too many role models of caring adults around to show the boys that all types of personalities can have a service attitide and not all have to be super rah rah types or highly accomplished skilled outdoorsmen. Limiting adult involvement, thats what we need in the BSA today, we have enough help, we don't need you Now, on the other hand, if its is an adult treking club under the thin disguise of a Boy Scout Troop, I agree, but do we know how this Troop operates before we rail against them?

Is there such thing as Pack Executive Committee ?
OldGreyEagle replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Cub Scouts
Well, what they did was not the normal way to do it but however the way it is done, the COR makes the decision and thats it. You would think the COR would want to know who is interested, what the qualifications of the interested people are and all that, yet if the COR does what your "Executive Committee" says. then you have a new Cubmaster. appointed in accordance with the BSA rules as the COR appointed him. BTW, that also means only the COR can "fire" the cubmaster, or any other adult leader -

OldGreyEagle replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Cub Scouts
Well, if its a consolation, picking the new Cubmaster or Scoutmaster etc is not the function of the Committee. Selection of adult leaders is the COR's job and if they appoint whoever the Committee Chair says to, there is not a lot of room for the Committee to do much. Now, the BSA has literature about how to do Leader Selection and the process to be sure the best candidate is selected and that is done by the COmmittee, but in the end, its the COR's job and anyway its done is the way its done for that unit -

Actually, the Cub Master and the Assistant Cub Master are not on the Committee, so I guess the "Executive Committee" would have to be where they would be. Not going to find the term "Executive COmmittee" in any BSA literature on units What did they decide? -
OK, as we here in the East Coast area dig out yet again from a winter storm, I have to comment on the local Media's "Storm Coverage" or "Storm Tracker" or whatever it is that they call it. Other parts of the Country, do they do the same things? You know, Big Winter Storm coming, stay tune to Channel XX for all updates and latest information. First, they have some guy saying, yes it's going to be bad, lots of snow coming, then while the storm is going on, they say "stay home, don't go out lots of snowing is falling, , then they have reporters standing out in the snow, saying things like "well yes Bob, its really snowing here, how is it 10 miles west?" "Well here 10 miles west its really snowing, what about 10 miles south?" "Same story, really snowing, Township Officials are saying to have people stay inside and if you must go out, be sure to bundle up." Someone commented on the need to dress in layers Be sure to Bundle up? Dress in layers? Thats the information I need to keep up with the storm? All day all they can say is it's snowing and they tell people to bundle up dressing in layers? If any one is taking notes on this and saying, wow, bundle up, and layers I am sure glad they said that, as I ddint know . Well, those people need to freeze to be eliminated from the gene pool. They have seminars on how to shovel snow, that drinking hot liquid warms you up faster than not drinking it. All valuable information I have never seen before. Then when its over its the recap, yes, we said it would snow, then it snowed, you all saw the snow and now the snow is over, all thanks to use here at XXXX News and Weather. Oh yes, we told you to bundle up before going out, dressing in layers cause clearly you didnt know that How did the colonials ever survive without such required information? How did we as a society ever make it this far without such fonts of knowledge? Is this a local thing? What have you guys seen regarding storm coverage, anywhere in the country?

Status of Historical Merit Badges
OldGreyEagle replied to CaveEagle's topic in Advancement Resources
LisaBob, I didnot mean to imply that you were calling volunteers otherwise, what I was ham handedly trying to say was that in my experience, the people with the most passion and devotion invested in the program are the volunteers and they tend to cover all bases. The Professionals know little of the program and just push to reach critical achievements whether or not it is done according to the program I should have worded it better, I was trying to represent the axiom "brevity is the soul of wit" and ended up only halfway there -
Status of Historical Merit Badges
OldGreyEagle replied to CaveEagle's topic in Advancement Resources
"If it were entirely volunteers doing all this stuff, that would be one thing. But I was under the impression that "National" has a fairly sizable paid, professional staff running the show. Maybe I am mistaken?" Ah, see, the supposition may be that Volunteer = Incompetent, not really devoted to the program Professional = Competent, devoted to the program In general, I have found the opposite to be true -
Charter Organization and Unit relationship
OldGreyEagle replied to MNBob's topic in Council Relations
here is a thought, and its on topic. Each Council has an Annual Meeting where the budget is approved and other resolutions. What percentage of COR's show up in your Council? Do you know, or do you know someoen who would know? These are the people (CORs) with the most power in the Council, what perentage shows up at the most impoertant meeting of the year? -
and yet you still do, consistently, thread after thread, you don't change your opinion, (and that's your right) and Ed dosen't change his opinion, (and thats his right) And on it goes

Charter Organization and Unit relationship
OldGreyEagle replied to MNBob's topic in Council Relations
This thread is very depressing and I am the 4th post. What is being described is all too common. A totally disinterested and absent Chartering Organization which doesnt understand their role. In reality, the CO's have all the power in the BSA. They are the ones who shape policy from a COuncil to National level. If you want to have more control of your Council's direction, the best and fastest way to do that is organize the CO's. Which of course is the issue. They don't organize easily, but that is where the power lies, its not with us the volunteers, its with the CO's. If we want change, we have to engage the CO's -
They did the casual Friday thing with everyone except one guy in underwear and then the very next comcerical was the Dockers one. We went from people in an office building not wearing pants to a group of guys in a field not wearing pants, I thought it was an extension of the same commercial. Of course the the most Forum related one was the Monster.Com one featuring the Beavers, I am sure ol' Beavah was chortili'n away when that one came on the screen, and I thought of him and all you beavers immediately. Such cute little guys, hard to imagine they can be so wrong at times... The final results of the game should not have been a surpise to anyone, it was Scout Sunday and the team with the Fleur des Lis won, it was predestined, it could not have been anyway else. And as an avid Bears fan, I thought the Boost thing was just so bad, how many people recognized those guys? Perhaps in the Chicagoland area they would get it, but that was a long time ago

this is from the school district in the community where I live (as opposed to my school distrct "... shall be subject to all federal and state laws and regulations prohibiting discrimination in admissions, employment and operation on the basis of disability, race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, ancestry or need for special education services." I don't see how that clause could allow the school to Charter a BSA unit. Chartering a BSA unit means the unit must discriminate on religion (or lack there of) and sexual orientation. And I am ok with that, I don't want a governmental unit sponsoring a group that has religious or sexual orientation restrictions. It would seem to be ok now, but what if in the future the School starts to sponsor a neat after school activity that appeals to a lot of kids and all you have to do to attend is to worship Allah and denounce Christianity. How much fun would that be? So if the School sponsors a Gay, Lesbian and Bi Teen Dance and the students had to denouce Heterosexuality as the only accepted form of sexuality, to get in how would that be? DOn't laugh too loud, I am using hyperbole to make a point, things change, we should not be comfortable with a situation just because its the way we like it. It wasn't all that long ago the Democrats had a filibuster proof majority and they dreamed grand things, one thing changed, one guy won an election and the whole foundation of what they counted on changed. We keep saying we are a private organization and we should act like one. There are private universities that do not take Government money so they can run things the way they want. We should model them.
-
Does anyone know of a situation where a governmental unit that was chartering a BSA unit (such as a Public elementary School) was taken to Court on discrimination charges and the Court decided the BSA unit was allowed to continue being chartered by the School
-
Just for clarity, If I go to a Public Elementary School and ask the school to charter a Cub Pack, Merlyn's postion is that cannot be done as the Public School is prohibited by law to discriminate. This is the line about discrimination from the local School District "... shall be subject to all federal and state laws and regulations prohibiting discrimination in admissions, employment and operation on the basis of disability, race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, ancestry or need for special education services. Beavah says that the Public Elementary School can indeed charter the Cub pack if it feels its in the best interest of the community to do so Do I understand the positions?

Sorry, Ed, I don't understand your answer. These are the statements I made in the post. We don't have to worry about the Supreme Court statement as we both agree BSA's discriminatory position is legal and I am fine with that A. So, if Merlyn said the Chartering Organizations and the BSA were both dishonest, would that be better? B. Would acknowleding the wrong doing of another entity mitigate the BSA's dishonesty? C. Does having a partner in dishonesty somehow take away sonme of the sting of being dishonest? D. If you found your teen age son drunk as a skunk in your basement and all he can say is "Hey, my best friend is drunk as well" does that soothe your feelings towards your son? I had thought I framed these as yes or no questions, but perhaps I was wrong. When you say "Yeah OGE that would be accurate" what is accurate? In the first statement if Merlyn said both sides were dishonest that would be better for you? And Merlyn has aleady weighed in he wont be saying that but I was trying to make a point In the second statement I asked if another entity does wrong, does that mitigate the BSA's dishonesty? Is that accurate?, the BSA is less dishonest because another entity did wrong? In the third statement I asked if having a partner in dishonesty takes away the sting of being dishonest, does it? If I have a partner and we both lie cheat and steal is it not as bad as long as we have each other? And the fourth statment, does your son having a drinking buddy make you feel better that both are drunk? What is accuate about the post?

NE-IV-88-Beaver I sent you a PM, did you get it? -
personally I love the threads on what constitutes being "active". I remember a few years back, or perhaps moer than a few years when the consensus was we wished national would publish a definition of active and whether we like it or not, at least it would be a refrence point. The National defined active and clarified it and then again clarified and we still argue about it. Everyone knows what is correct, the way they think of course!
-
Ed, of course you are correct, the governmental entity is also being dishonest for chartering an organization that is inherently discriminatory (not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact the Supreme Court that it was fine) So, if Merlyn said the Chartering Organizations and the BSA were both dishonest, would that be better? Would acknowleding the wrong doing of another entity mitigate the BSA's dishonesty? Does having a partner in dishonesty somehow take away sonme of the sting of being dishonest? If you found your teen age son drunk as a skunk in your basement and all he can say is "Hey, my best friend is drunk as well" does that soothe your feelings towards your son?
