Safeguarded Wood Badge Discussions?
OldGreyEagle replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Emb, Unfortunatley it may be the time to move on, but several Wood Badgers, in my Council at least, have not. There is a course this September and the SPL boasts it will be his 8th course. Wood Badge continues to be elitist in some areas and the best way to combat this is to be upfront, acknowledge it and then move on -

Why do troops fall apart or decline?
OldGreyEagle replied to E-Mtns's topic in Open Discussion - Program
before I can be appropriately outraged, define "Cuss" and then the theft issue -
When I think of CT, I think of Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield, the guy who had this idea of using a computer to take density readings of a radio diverse density and compile it into an axial view of the body. The conventional Medical Radiology industry shut him down, but finally he talked to EMI (Electric & Musical Industries Ltd) who had no problem thinking digitally. The first CT macines came from EMI and the results were called EMI scans until the rest of the imaging world decided to get on board Sorry, just the musings of an old x-ray tech who worked with one of the first EMI scanners in the Chicago land area at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood Park

Yes Ed, I heard about the National Day of Prayer being deemed unconstitutional and what surprised me most was that a national day of prayer was ever allowed to be held in the first place and that it has taken to 2010 to have it declared unconstitutional. Because of the first amendment, I dont understand how there ever could have been a Nationa Day of Prayer in the first place, just another thing I dont understand

Lisabob, I am keeping an open mind on this and I know you teach in a University setting (I think). So, the University students wear flip flops through mud and then want to wash their feet? Would it not be smarter to make a more appropriate foot wear selection and eschew the necessity of installing foot baths?
-
I have been around for a very long time. For as long as I have been alive, a public restroom for males consisted of urinals, commodes, and sinks at the level of about the waist. If we are saying there is an overwelming demand for foot baths because of hygiene concerns, I have to ask why now? Why is the Status Quo not good enough? If there is some flesh eating bacteria out there that attacks unwashed feet,OK,I am in. I want to see a reason why an alteration to public restrooms is required. There may be a religious sect that says after washing hands, one must look at ones reflection in a full length mirror. If full length mirrors are placed in every public restroom, I can guarantee you they will be used. But does that mean they are necessary? And let me please declare I am not Anti-Muslim, I am not anti-Islam. I just want to understand the arguments and use these examples because they are what has been mentioned.
-
Merlyn, I am not sure I follow. You mention safety or damage to sinks. SO, the Muslims were damaging public areas and facilities in those areas because they were trying to fulfill their religious obligations of washing their feet. So, to stop the damage of public areas, the foot baths were installed. Just for sake of argument, why didnt the state state that damaging state property by using facilities for other than their intended purposes is considered vandalism and subject to criminal prosecution?

Former AOL recipients drop out of Boy Scouts
OldGreyEagle replied to CPAMom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I hold quite a few Eagle Board of Reviews in the District I serve. One thing that continues to amaze me is the number of times I run across the "Flock of Eagles" syndrome. This is where a Cub Den starts off, sometimes even as Tigers and some later on, but the group gels, the parents enjoy each others company and the Den bridges to a Troop and then just about every scout earns Eagle. Both parents and kids love the experience. The Boys have a lifetime of memories and the Pack and Troop is just so proud they can bust. Then there is the Issue of the "Stealth" patrol, we think they exist but there is no evidence of it. None or little attendance at meetings or outings and they just in the end drop. Perhaps a few hang on, some even make Eagle. I just wish I could figure out how the "Flock of Eagle" syndrome works and what causes a Den to turn to Stealth mode. Both happen in just about every Troop in the District. If we could unlock that secret, it would be great! -
Actually its really quite simple, if you respect the Gateway, the Gateway will respect you

I don't know if this is a too small a nit to pick, but that won't stop me. I am sure everyone recognizes that a Board of Review also reviews the Unit's Program and how well the youth is being served by the program as much as it's about whether or not the youth has succeeded in his advancements. Make no mistake, the boy has to have done all the requirements completed, but a Board of Review is also the time to get the youths perspective on how the Troop is handled and if the Troops activities appeal to the youth. It is supposed to be a two way conversation

Actually Merlyn only wants the BSA to be treated as the private organization the Sureme Court said it was. This does mean that no taxpayer money is to be spent on an organization that discriminates on a legal basis aaaa

I stated I enjoy the classics of the Arts and I think the public would benefit from enjoying great art. One need not be a Christian to appreciate the artistry and composition of Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" so it should be ok to reproduce it with Public Funds One doesnt need to be Christian to appreciate Michelangelo's David or be a follower of Ancient Rome's Religion to appreciate Prometheus and Atlas at Rockerfeller Center Is not the quiet comtemplation of true artistic talent of some benefit?
-
this may be hyperbole but here goes, We say that having an Islamic Foot Bath in a Public Restroom in a Public Building with Public Funds is Ok because the Foot Bath will be open to anyone to use and it serves a secular purpose So, a duplicate of Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper" may be painted on the wall in that same Public Restroom in a Public Building with Public Funds? I enjoy the classics of the Arts and I think the public would benefit from enjoying great art. One need not be a Christian to appreciate the artistry and composition of Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" so it should be ok to reproduce it with Public Funds
-
This should be interesting: The reason "Islamic" footbaths are ok to be installed in public areas using public funds is because you don't have to be Islamic to "enjoy" them, correct?

Let us not forget the Emo "style" which often uses Cub and Boy Scout Uniform parts. Emo is a form of music and style of dress and life style, you know, I wish my lawn was Emo so it would cut itself... How do you know if a group of boys are an Emo Band? They all have tight black T's on with black jeans very tight and very low, all have black eyemake-up on and at least half are crying at any one time Dont believe me? Search "Emo" and "Scout" on Ebay

Ed, lets say you and I and NJCubSCouter meet. Both of you pull out guns and shoot me. From that point, are you saying that no one could say "Ed shot OGE" rather they would always have to say "Ed and NJCubScouter shot OGE"? Because to say Ed shot OGE was wrong? You didnt shoot me? I can see it in the future, your kids go to school and someone says, Hey, didnt your Dad shoot OGE? And you kid says, you are a liar, my Dad did not shoot OGE, NJCubScouter and my Dad shot OGE Does that make sense?

Returning of Program Beads
OldGreyEagle replied to Mom2Scouts06's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
You could lash together a sedan chair sort of contraption with the object on the Chair, sitting on velour or some such material and with a small box containing a few doves which would be released after delivery of the beads. Of course, if this is to be done indoors, you can drop the birds If anyone in your patrol plays a muscial instrument, they could play a march of some kind. Even better would be a sound system that could play the theme to 2001 A Space Oydessy(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Wasn't Carrie Fisher so strung out on cocaine that Lucas put her in the gold bikini tied to Jabba so he knew where she was?

Again, I know I should look away but yet I am inexplicably drawn in. Merlyn has never said that a BSA unit could not meet in a Public School as long as the BSA unit is treated the same as any private organization. Merlyn does say that the Public School could not Charter a BSA unit, which is different than allowing the BSA unit to meet on school grounds under the same conditions as other private organizations. So, to review, Merlyn does not want Public Schools Chartering BSA Units although BSA units can certainly meet in a Public School as long as the BSA Unit is treated the same as any private organization. Now, as to what Merlyn wants, I am not a mind reader, but I can read text. Merlyn has no problem with a private person putting up a Nativity scene at Christmas on that persons personal property. He does have a problem with a town putting up a Nativity Scene at Christmas on Public Grounds using taxpayer funds. For those who keep claimimg Merlyn wishes to live in a world without religion, you guys are wrong. Personal rights to express religious views on personal property is Ok with Merlyn, he just doesnt want tax money used. I am not sure Merlyn has ever advocated that the BSA allow in Atheists, he just wants the BSA to be the private organization the Supreme Court said it was and practice the legal discrimination that they said the BSA could and not get tax payer money or support. I think he also is not too happy with the BSA saying to be the 'Best kind of Citizen" you have to beleive a God or gods but I have done enough conjecture at this point I hope I have this correct, but I am pretty sure I do. If not, Merlyn will correct me as he should as I am trying to tell others what Merlyn thinks, that is usually best left up to the person in question but in this case, Merlyn's message seems to get garbled to quite a few people. Governmental Units cannot Charter BSA units, BSA units can meet in Public Buildings subject to the rules that all private organizations have to follow. Thats it, how does it always end up with a proclamation that Merlyn wants religion out of our Culture? He has never said so, that I have seen. Well then, I can't wait to see what mistakes I have made, I am sure there are some (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
