Question about YPT and the Patrol Method
OldGreyEagle replied to Gwaihir's topic in The Patrol Method
I went on My Scouting, and I saw one thread on Patrol Camping. Started by the past Forum member who hasn't changed his editorial style in any way. I didnt see anything that alleged striking Patrol Outings was being considered, the post by the National Employee reads: "Guys, it takes some time for me to go from lurking to participating. I still lose my cookies getting into the community so it is hit and miss. However, let's go to the source vs. rumor. Circa May 2008 (literature updates pending). It was based on review of a letter requesting clarification of the policy related to "patrol activities" to the camping task force and approved by the Boy Scout Committee: A Boy Scout patrol or Varsity Scout squad may participate in Patrol Activities with the permission of their Scoutmaster or Coach and parents/guardians. The clarification is intended to provide leaders and parents the discretion to approve local activities for patrols/squads while eliminating hiking or camping outings without proper adult leadership and planning tools such as Tour Permits" OK, that looks like a pretty solid affirmation that the Patrol Outing is not in jeopardy. Then again, I dont always comprehend everthing I read. What do you guys see? -
Question about YPT and the Patrol Method

Rather then to continue to cry in our Root Beer, is their something we can do besides hysterically wringing our hands and talking about the good old days? Is this something worth rallying against or do we contineut the status quo, cluck out collective tongues and stand by as the program gets gutted? -
Question about YPT and the Patrol Method

Do we have official confirmation from Irving that Patrol Outings/Campouts without adults has been struck? I don't mean heavy rumors, I don't mean I heard from a guy who knows a guy who is the son in law of the Grandest Po-bah, Do we have confirmation? -
Has Dad always been such a jerk or is his a new facet to his personality? So he teaches the Quartermaster to mess up another guys work because you aren't happy with what the guy agreed to do and was accepted by a third party? SOungds like someone needs to grow up and its not the person taking Wood Badge

"I hate Illinois Nazis" Loved the Maxwell street scenes, its like that even when they are not shooting the movie "Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don't fail me now." Actually, the Penguin was mild compared to the real nuns at my school "It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?" Gotta love driving an unmarked black and white Mount Prospect cop car "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses." True Cinematic Legend. . .

How could the BSA be liable for Libel if they only released the list due to a court order? WOuld that be liberal or literal? So, an adult is accused of sexual encounters with minors, is it better for the BSA to allow the person to stay in the organization as they check it out, or is it better to take the person out first and the let them back in if they check out? yes, the way the BSA does it is without any form of due process, but somehow thats not there issue here.

I realize I am naught but a lowly catholic, who knows nothing but, I do seem to remember being taught at one time that God was all loving and regardless of the transgression, if we are truly sorry for our actions, he will forgive us. I do not feel the need to exercise an opinion as to the final destination of others, that is for Him to decide. I will concentrate on where I will end up. Note, his behavior was reprehensible, but for anyone to profess to predict his final judgement seems a bit far fetched for we do not know his heart.

Before we go on, There is at least one other merit badge that has prerequisites: The White Water merit badge has these: 3.Before doing requirements 4 through 13 earn the Canoeing merit badge if you will be using a canoe to earn this merit badge. If you will be using a kayak, earn the Kayaking BSA Award.

I thought the terms of the lease was one dollar a year, renewable each year for perpetuity with either side able to cancel the lease with a one year notice to quit. Philly gave their notice more than a year ago

these are the first 3 requirements for the swimmig merit badge: 1.Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that co-occur while canoeing, including hypothermia, heat reactions, dehydration, insect stings, tick bites, and blisters. 2.Do the following: a. Identify the conditions that must exist before performing CPR on a person. Explain how such conditions are recognized. b. Demonstrate the proper technique for performing CPR using a training device approved by your counselor. 3.Before doing the following requirements, successfully complete the BSA swimmer test: Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating. SO, while its not the Swimming merit badge, its not without regard to the fact of the scout's swimming ability either

How fast/slow should scouts advance through the ranks?
OldGreyEagle replied to LanceEagle's topic in Advancement Resources
its been awhile since this came up, so here we go again My understanding of The First Class First Year progam is that it is Unit Centered, not individual centered. In following First Class First Year a Troop commits to having a program/calendar that if a scout attended the program presented, he could reach First Class in a Year. I am not aware of anything in the BSA that says to reach First Class in a year, that any corners be cut or skills left untuned. The Scout must learn and demonstrate that knowledge and then be given the opportunity to use that skill/knowledge -

I understand about playing it safe, but what is a boy who joined Venturing at 14 and was a First Class Scout who then dumps his troop registration and is only registered as a Venturer supposed to do 3 years later? Buy a Boy Scout uniform because the grumpy old men on the Eagle Board are not expected to actually comprehend what the rules are? I dont want to get the youth caught is a micturating contest, but when do we hold adults as accountable as the youth?

I am not sure if I would ever equate sack tapping with punching in the arm in a game of "you flinched", wait, in a game of you fliched, you knew the punch was coming. In a "dare" you knew what you had to do, it was voluntary You want to prove your are a better man than the other guy? Boxing gloves with helmets and mouthpieces and if there is a black eye, a sack of frozen peas Willfully causing pain to an unsuspecting victim has no shred of charactor building in it

Speaking of Liberace, he successfully sued a Tabloid for implying he was gay http://www.bobsliberace.com/decades/1950s/1950s.9.html

I asked my wife about this and she was startled. She said she had just seen this very subject, Sack Tapping, on Judge Judy. On the Judge Judy episode the "sack tapper" has injured another boy to the point of needing medical care. The end was the parents of the tapper were responsible to pay the medical bills. Now, if the tapper is 18 or more, then he gets sued for the payments. If the sack tapper ends up with just doing a "presenation" the youth in your troop know they can do anything and just skate. This is a real issue, the question isn't how this effects the Gold Award, its whether or not the tapper gets arrested for Battery

is the place where I say they can't be requiring a Boy Scout Uniform to sit for an Eagle Board of Review anyway? Oh, I just did ALthough I agree with picking battles that will effect the youth. I wouldnt want to delay a youth getting Eagle because some (insert favorite derogatory phrase here) require(s) the uniform I like the one uniform for everyone approach. Make it an XXX or 4 x to be sure it always fits everyone and then have the youth explain why he is wearing it. OOps, I guess that goes againsr my first comment oh well
