  1. A masked person burst into your home at the dead of night, knocks over furniture and shoots a gun at you and your spouse as you scramble away from the TV set, you are able to locate and load and shoot your attacker dead. The police who investigate call it self-defense, the media who cover it call it self-defense, your religious leader tells you even though there is the commandment, You shall not Kill, it was self-defense and you did nothing wrong. A person who is suspected of having knowledge of a terrorist attack is captured, it is known that unless the location of a bomb is found and defused in 3 hours, thousands will die. What do you do to obtain the location from the suspected terrorist, recognizing he may not actually know, but if he does know and does not tell you, thousands will die
  2. raisinemright you are one brave dude, to be in open water about to be rescued by a scout who doesnt know how to operate the motor? even an electric one take more courage than I have
  3. I do beleive the statement "Torture is always wrong" is an absolute statement and as we all know, there are no such things as an absolute
  4. Just in for a few seconds, nothing yet on the return of the Latin Mass, but it's early yet. Something Beavah posted gave me pause "The Catholic Church rejects nothing which is true and holy in these religions. She looks with sincere respect upon those ways of conduct and of life, those rules and teachings which, though differing in many particulars from what she holds and sets forth, nevertheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all people..." It appears the Catholic Church refers to itself with the feminine pronoun "She". Why would the Catholic Church refer to itself in the feminine if they thought being female was second class? BAck to monitoring websites...
  5. Beavah, I absolve you of all your sins, past present and future for your defense of the Catholic Church, My father thanks you, my mother thanks you my sister thanks you my brother thanks you and I thank you I suppose I could spin a thread off this spun off thread and title it something like What would it take to change your mind on the Catholic Church, but I think the results would be pretty much like what we have seen here, in effect, there is nothing. Personally I would like to respond to a lot of things presented here but presently am spending most of my time trying to beat back the advancing of the Tridentine (Latin) Mass that BadenP warned us about last December. I have been going to church every Sunday and listening to and reading the text of the Mass, so far no changes. I have scoured the Diocese of Allentown website looking for the announcement of the change back to Latin while systematically going though each Diocese website in the Country looking for what has to be comming soon, the return to the Latin Mass. I have asked Priests if they have been practicing Latin in advance of the return to Latin and as yet none will admit they have any knowledge of such a thing. Pax Vobiscum
  6. Gern, you say "discrimination" like thats a bad thing?
  7. I hate it when someone hijacks a thread, then again I am no stranger to self-loathing as a Roman Catholic and I think we have established that no information will be enough to make us change our minds so its bible quoting time 1 Corinthians 11:8-9,11-12 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man..... In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. Seems like men and women are equals, Galatians 3:8 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Equals again Ephesians 5:22-33 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."[This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband My wife often reminds me, while she must submit to me, I have to love her, there is only a biblical directive for a husband to love his wife, the wife only has to submit and respect, love? Well thats an option a husband does not have
  8. Not sure what a Venturing Scout is, but then I haven't be snarky all day Stosh, I thought you went through National and had your Crew approved to fire artillery pieces because of the certifications they hold Did I misunderstand? PS, is a brace of 4 pistols a total of 8?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  9. Bacchus, none taken I tried to be as neutral as I could but I admit I am not a wordsmith so I am what I am BTW, those who have answered the original question have pretty well much all said there is no information which would change their position. So why do we argue something that we all agree no amount of information would make us reconsider our viewpoint? We feel we are "right" and the other person is wrong so they will change their position if I say the right words while of course there are no right words the other person can say that will change my mind because of course I am right Why do we beat each other up in such a fruitless argument?
  10. Hey, you take a freshly dressed caliper and soak it in salt brine overnight and then fill it with cloves and bake basted with brown sugar and Honey at 325F and that my friend is good eating Of course only in season, only with the correct license and having the youth follow all applicable state hunting laws and another good reason to be in a Venturing Crew as Crews may hunt as a unit activity. Course they still can't play paintball(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  11. So, Eagledad said "Gay sex is not natural, and we have to agree to disagree on this subject." So, the question here is, what information would it take to change your mind that Homosexuality is/is not deviant/unnatural/wrong, whatever your view is Now, this is not another avenue to argue the morality of Homosexuality, we have plenty of them threads running around, this is what information would cause you to change your position, whatever it is?
  12. Beavah, we haven't had a misunderstanding in a very long time so we may be due, but to me this statement: 1.Boy Scouts may shoot single shot 22 caliber rifles only. Means the only caliber rifle a Boy Scout may shoot is a single shot .22. Now, allowing a scout to shoot any model .22 by giving him one shell at a time is fine as well. But are you saying that a Boy Scout can shoot another caliper?
  13. Pritch, from the Guide to Safe Scouting: Rifles 1.Boy Scouts may shoot single shot 22 caliber rifles only. 2.All rifle shooting activities must be supervised by a currently NRA -certified Rifle Instructor and when on the range, must be supervised by a currently NRA-certified Range Safety Officer. 3.Shooting safety glasses and ear protection must be worn on rifle ranges. 4.Care must be taken to comply with federal, state, and local laws http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss08.aspx For Boy Scouts, .22's is the only rifle they can shoot, Venturing Crews on the other hand can shoot anything caliber rifle they can find a safe range for PS Boy Scouts may not shoot pistols, even 22's while Venturers may shoot any size pistol they can shoot safely, they do need the NRA training beforehand however(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  14. C'mon NJCubScouter, you very well know what deviant, bizarre and Not Natural sex is... Its anything YOU would not do (rhetorical you implied of course)
  15. As one living in Bethlehem, PA, I concur with ScoutNut
  16. C'mon Sherm, it politics in the 21rst Century, its all about imposing one's will, or view of what's right on others. If I say there is to be no Same Sex Unions, Marriages, Covenants whatever and if there are Same Sex Unions, MArriages, Covenants, then I lose, if I lose I suffer since I didnt get my way which is of course the true measure of winning Compromise? Live and Let Live? Where's the victory in that? I know whats best for you even if I dont know you, I just do, its a gift and a curse...
  17. Bando, remember I said "all consumerism is local", I havent had your experience and you haven't had mine, but I object to being told to forgo my experience because its "better" for the country... So I buy an American "made" car, and it tanks, who helps me? I just have friends who say did you do your research? Of course now I drive a Nissan Frontier made in Smyrna,Tenn My father's Mercury was assembled in Canada with parts made in Mexico
  18. lets assume its an "Ad Hoc" patrol, how does that effect whether or not your Troop does the "Gung Ho" patrol method and the youth form their own patrol of "stacked" scouts? Either the scouts in the troops want to win and will form a patrol to beat the others or they don't care. If they dont care, why should the adults? I cant think of anything better than beating the Screaming Eagles at their own game, well on the field of compettion with a legitimate patrol.
  19. Eagle23 check the safeguarded discussions, I have a link there(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  20. Unfortunately Bando, all consumerism is local. The three American made cars I have owned, the AMC, the Buick and Ford all died before 75, 000 miles, the Honda, Toyota and Nissan went over 100,000 before they were sold and I never heard back from the owners. I guess buying American made would help your bottom line and that of the mechanics in my area, call me a commie, but I am not sure I am ready to buy American just because you want me too and not because you have a competitive product
  21. per normal, I have a story associated with my view and it comes form my youth (as long ago as that may be) The troop of my youth had problems with Camporees, we had guys who just flat didnt care a rats butt if they did well, or if the patrol did well. This attitude grated seriously with those of us who took scout craft rather seriously and it lead to more than a few serious confrontations between those who were gung ho about scout skills and those who were not. The scoutmaster solved the problem by putting those who wanted to be in the Gung Ho Patrol (We were the only patrol allowed to wear the "New" (at the time) red berets when they came out. Each scout was to be an Expert at one skill (mine was Morse Code) and a second skill (knots) then we hit the compettions. The patrol decided who would be in the patrol, well the patrol leader and the asst PL did at least. This was the patrol I was in, at scout meetings, at campouts, its was the patrol I belonged to and we were the Gung Ho's. It eliminated the confrontations between zealots and slackers. Now, was this an affront to the Patrol Method? I will have to wait to see what Kudu has to say. We took boys who had a common interest and they stayed together while in scouting. I dont see the issue with putting youth who have the same dedication to scouting in a single patrol and keeping them there but then I could be wrong
  22. the NFL preseason is underway, some of the teams have an excellent chance of winnning the Super Bowl, others just an outside chance if things break their way and others have no chance of making the playoffs. Yet every Sunday, or Monday, or occasional Thurday and Saturday all the teams in the league will be playing their games with no restrictions or handicaps on teams that have been judged "too good" for the rest of the league Tired of the Screaming Eagles beating your butt? Learn the skills and beat then, don't rely on someone else to level the playing field. I don't know when we should teach the youth that there will always be someone bigger, stronger, smarter, faster, and then younger than you. Talk about teaching entitlement, if one patrol is too good, we legislate them out of competition, we "Break Up the Yankees?" The way to get strong is through competition and you learn more from losing than winning, or am I just out of touch?
  23. Color me dazed and confused... What I see here, and I could be wrong, is that what we want is a Camporee where there is a completley flat playing field. That all patrols are equal regardless of age and wisdom and skill and ability and rank. Everything is massaged to make everyone is equal because that's only fair And the entity doing the massaging of results is the "Governing" organization of the competition? Did I miss something?
  24. Criminal Lawyers always scare me, mostly because I think its a redundant phrase
