On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me 5 gold rings...

Lots and Lots of people in Pennsylvania have guns, we love them, Guns and Our Bibles, we sort of cling to them... Local TV station has several reports about gun sales being up, Carry and Conceal permit applications are up, availibility of bullets and guns down

on the fourth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me four calling birds...

Remember Venturers may shoot any size firearm legal including handguns

and this is the rub, no, I might not "need" a gun with a magazine with a capacity of more than 10 rounds any more than I need a house of more than 10,000 square feet to live in with my wife But who gets to tell me "no"? Based on what criteria?

on the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me, Three French Hens...

So, I might not need 10 shots to mow down a deer, but that does not define "basic defense" good job on the citizen use thought
-
Define "citizen use" or "basic defense" ? Reminds me of a quote from Jesus Christ Superstar when Pilate was talking to Jesus "and what is truth, is truth unchanging law? We both have truth, is mine the same as yours?" From gun control to falling off the fiscal cliff, we appear to all have different truths(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Eagle 732 did a good job of that on 12/17/2012 4:08:53 in the pesky assault rifle thread but it does raise a question, is a semi-automatic shotgun an assault weapon? My Browning semi-automatic (made in Belgium) has a 5 shot magazine, although I have a wood plug that makes it 3 shot and it will fire those 3 shots as fast as the trigger may be pulled. Now, the 22 pistol I have is a revolver so its not an assault weapon, is it? and then the 3 muzzle loaders are not and that completes my arsenal,,, ahhh, collection....

When Scouters are too serious

JMHawkins, if or when you tell me how to keep my life in balance, be prepared for a sharly worded. although scoutlike, rebuke -
I think people who are 25% over the governemt established weight limit should be banned from buying food until they are under the mark. Obese people cost society so much its time to end the madness(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Like OMG Carly Rae Jepsen and Train at Bechtel
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
No word as yet on Roger and the gang, just the Jepsen young lady and Train -
So, I just saw Carly Rae Jepsen will be opening the Jamboree and Train closing it Now, I have no idea who Carly Rae Jepsen is other than she sang Call me Maybe and the kids at Philmont all knew it. Train on the other hand I had never heard of until last night and I was watching Miss Universe. Train performed at the end and if they are good enough for "The Donald", they should be good enough for the scouts Did this just jump the hip meter on scouting? Inquiring minds want to know

Who carries a firearm on Scout Outings???
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So, it may come down to this A regular poster was fond of saying that as we all are fellow volunteers in the great organization of the BSA we should respect each other's knowledge of the program they offer and the wishes of their Chartering Organization . As such its been interesting to say the least to learn about the number of people who have firearms on activities, but I think it comes to respecting your fellow volunteer and trusting they will behave in the best possible manner regarding the program and safey of the youth they serve In the words of Tiny Tim, God Bless us all, everyone (carriers and noncarriers alike) -
the private message feature here rarely works, sorry

Gun Control, what is reasonable?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Issues & Politics
Interesting anecedote on the natural disaster angle My wifes daughter lives about a mile from the Jersey Shore, they were without power for 12 days after Sandy. They have a generator left over from the previous years Halloween Snow Storm. They did power lots of neighbors refrigerators with the generator but it was shut off around 9pm and locked up in the house because such things as generators were being stolen. The schools were closed and parents were home with children and couldnt get gas to go to shelters or first aid stations which were overwelmed by people who had lost their homes, not just power. The police were also overwelmed which made the neighbors devise neighborhood watch patrols, some armed some not. Stories such as these make me think of "Lord of the Flies" the line that defines civilization is might mighty fragile Damn, now I have to rethink the whole carrying issue -
There seems to be a lot of anger here, and a rhetorical, why is that? We are almost all adult volunteers in an Organization whose local professional component hardly ever obtains our respect It appears there is little regard for "Irving" or anything that is done at the National level. And yet we still spend time and energy with an Organization we appear to despise and have little regard for, why do we do what we do?

Who carries a firearm on Scout Outings???
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Surprised no one has mentioned this, but I can think of one BSA outing where everyone, youth and adults would have firearms A Venturing Crews Hunting Trip This forum gets lots of opinions from lots of places. Urban, SUburban, rural and everywhere in between. From Alaska to Maine, from Tampa/St Pete to San Francisco and that is just what I can think of in the past 5 seconds. I am pretty sure there are no words of text I can produce which will stop those who carry on outings, nor are there words that would compel me to start. And I am an NRA Pistol Instructor. And I type this next part thoughtfully. For you guys who carry on outings, please be sure you know exactly what target you are discharging your firearm at. Talk about headlines, I wont even hazzard a guess if a scouter were to shoot a youth or innocent hiker. I know, you will say thats ridiculous, I would never do anything like that and I hope nothing like that happens. But just as BD said, I did not understand the number of people who carry guns on scouting events. People who do it for their jobs I understand. If you feel you must, then you must and be safe -
Gun Control, what is reasonable?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Issues & Politics
I am pro gun but don't think I fall in the class of "gun nut" but that is a relative term. As in a gun nut is anyone who has more guns that myself For the record its a 22 revolver, 12 gauge shotgun, 45 caliper muzzleloading pistol and 3 muzzleloader rifles. Just typing that makes me falter a bit on the "gun nut" comment I just made. Anyway, the Founding Fathers could not have forseen the internet, cars, etc but they were smart enough to know they didnt know what the future would bring so they put in the Constitution the ability for it to change. Its called Amendments. Now, the last time the Consitution was changed to ban something, we called it Prohibition and that didnt work out the way it was intended at all. I thougt the founders had thought there should be a Constitutional Covention every 20-30 years or so to keep current. Anybody else remember that? -
Not Quite Right in the Head - Our Responsibilities?
OldGreyEagle replied to JoeBob's topic in Working with Kids
If I gave the impression the youth we removed from the troop was because he had Aspergers, I apologize, I thought I made it clear the reason he was removed was because he presented a danger to other scouts. Whether he had a clincial diagnosis or was just "mean" we would have done the same thing -
Gun Control, what is reasonable?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Issues & Politics
personally I have a few guns a 12 gauge and a 22 pistol but my good friend Pierre has three 50 caliper rifles, of course they are muzzle loading black powder, one flintlock and two percussion cap -
Gun Control, what is reasonable?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Issues & Politics
Well pack, after all, a scout is thrifty and even a "slow" fully automatic firearm would use up quite a bit of ammo is a very short time -
I am doing this as a separate post as I want to be sure it stands alone as it should I do not understand when people think their experience trumps others. We do not know each other well enought to assume our own experience make us better qualified on a subject than anothers If a person can tolerate the sheer indifference drunk drivers show to themselves and others, that is up to them. I don't have to share it or be betold I need to be as indifferent as they are(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Sorry Beavah, I cannot agree with you on this If death appalls us, all death should appall us and I do not underst and the reluctance to say drunk drivers get a pass Mick Vick of the Eagles did time for his role in dog fighting. Heinous enough, he deserved what he got. People picket games he plays in because he is getting payed to play football. Donte Stallworth of the Patriots killed a man while drivng drunk. No one pickets his games and its not mentioned. Dogs are more well regarded than a human life? Its ok because he was drunk There is a cottage industry of lawyers who get drunk driving sentences overturned. If a lawyer gets a drunk driver off and the driver kills or maims, the lawyer should be disbarred. What is so hard to understand. Either we value human life or we don't. Lets not say one life is more expendable
