I'll tell you who is really evil, people with long hair, or a tattoo, or a male with a pierced ear, or facial hair or anything else disgusting to me. C'mon, if you ain't a Brad Pitt or George Clooney clone the BSA has no room for you. Of course as clones, they merely look like Pitt and Clooney, their beavior is at all times scout like...

Alternate swim requirements for 2nd & 1st Class
OldGreyEagle replied to JerseyScout's topic in Advancement Resources
check this out, you will need Council Advancement Committee permission http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/earlyalt.aspx but then again, it shouln't be too hard to do either. Have suggestions on how you would change the requirments and include them in your write-up(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Wireless? Of Course, How could I have been so gaseous!

this may be worthy of a spin off, but I have to ask, how many is too many knots? personally, anyone who allows patrols to camp within 300 feet of each other should be sumarily discharged, WoodBadge beads broken in half and hung by their pink neckers, well maybe not hung, just the bead thing is enough

Way Way Way back, when I was naught but a child, after Brownsea island but before the tragic termination of the beloved red berets, the Troop of my youth had an alcohol policy. Most of the adults would have a can, yes A as in one can of beer at the Saturday night campfire. The youth knew better than to drink any as they would have been swiftly dealt with there and also when they got delivered home. I have often thought it might be a good idea for adults to "model" appropriate behavior when consuming alcohol to show the youth you can imbibe and not be stupid. Unfortunately with a National organization, that is not possible. Actually I don't know if there was a Nationa Policy against alcohol back then but I digress. A scoutmaster involved in an auto accident, even if he got rear ended while at a traffic light with alcohol on his breath is in trouble, with tobacco on his breath, well he just stinks a little. A youth who is injured and when the EMTs come and smell alcohol on the adults there is a different thought process than if its tobacco, or garlic. We want our volunteers to be expert woodsmen, to be fully trained in all aspects of scout craft, we want them to be in top physical shape and now we want them to be tobacco free. How long before we weed out 90% of the volunteer pool?

How do you maintain 300 feet between patrol campsites with all the patrol stoves run off one big tank? Thats a lotta hose

I am not in favor of having a POR Contract, although I can see the value in having the Scout and Scoutmaster "sign" the POR job description. Its not a contract anymore than having a sheet of paper or booklet that details the Troops Schedule, dues rates, Scout Account information etc that some call Troop By-Laws but semantically they are not. Its not a contract, its just making sure the youth knows his duties. I would quickly add that if in 5 months and 3 weeks the scoutmaster sits the lad (what happened to Eammon anyway?)to tell him he has not done an acceptable job and he will have to start over because after all the boy signed the POR job description, and this is the first communicatin the boy has that his performance is lacking, thats wrong as well

Beading ceremony
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I was in the Council's first offering of WoodBadge for the 21rst Century, I shall pause here for the cheers and jeers, or jeers and cheers depending on how you look at it. As it turns out, there were several people from the District at the Course and it turned out that 7 of us completed our tickets at roughly about the same time so we had our Beading Ceremony at a Roundtable. We were dubbed the South Mountain 7, mostly because of our District's name and the number of people who received beads that evening but since we were subversives at heart, I always felt a connecton to the Chicago 7... Well actually not, but I thought of Abbie Hoffman at al everytime someone said South Mountain 7. Anyway, no children were harmed during our Beading Ceremony and it was more of an ad for the next course than anything else -

The Bible is God's word written by the divinely inspired. What is more important, the identity of the person who wrote the words or the words themselves? BTW, is not everything we write our opinions? -
Is Wood Badge just about "the beads"?

OldGreyEagle replied to John-in-KC's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
So if the trouble with IOLS is that it is too short, then the solution is to fix it, not create another course you have to go to after attending a course that didnt do what it was intended to do in the first place -

well then, perhaps a re-write of IOLS is in order, not the addition of another course. -

OldGreyEagle replied to John-in-KC's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I thought "Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills" was supposed to teach the Outdoor Skills required to go from Tenderfoot to First Class. If your District/Council version of IOLS does not end with a participant who can competently perform all the required skills then there is an issue with either the presentation of the material or the participants ability to comprehend or perform the skills. Participants ability to absorb the material may vary, so much like merit badge classes, individuals should be tested separately to assure that the skills are being mastered. A graduate of IOLS should be a competent camper, if not, the error is not the curriculum, its the teacher or the pupil or both -

>Ya gotta stop believing everything you read in wikipedia!> Can you back up your claim that Vicki believes this because she read it in Wikipedia? Where is your documentation? I think this is my favorite, posted in this thread on 8/18 Ephesions 5:22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Some take this verse and say it proves that man is head of the household and the wife is more or less chattel to do the mans bidding and the best thing they can say is "thank you sire, may I have another?" The next few verses gets ignored, still Ephesians 5 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church 30for we are members of his body. 31"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." "become one flesh" sounds like a team to me, no one more important than the other Anyway, this is my example BTW Ed are you saying you will be backing up all your claims from now on? Just sayin' -
Hey Kudu Patrol method question or opinion
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in The Patrol Method
Sometimes I get so confused. In an organization that is run by volunteers and it seems like its the same volunteers that run everything, we are going to limit adult participation in the organization? For all the Troops which have outings hanging on the brink of cancellation because they can't assure 2 deep leadership I apologize for the mindset of "Hey Adult, we dont need you" What an excellent opportunity to recruit new leaders, talk about positions in the Troop, District, Council even. I do not understand why we would curtail the enthusiasm of sdults any more than I would youth -
Hey Kudu Patrol method question or opinion
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in The Patrol Method
Oh boy, am I on shaky ground here but the answer is more or less obvious. You say you are moving from Troop method to multiple patrols so I assume (risky I know) you will have 2 patrols. Just keep the two patrols and the adults campsites separated by 300 feet (or as far as you can) and leave it at that. You can have as many adults as you want, just 300 feet from the patrols, which are 300 feet from each other There is something to the distance thing you know(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

See, this is why I try to stay out, but they keep dragging me back in... When I spoke of torture, I meant it as an intelligence (irony much?)gathering tool. Torture for the sake of punishment or amusement is always wrong, but then I am the guy who says there are no absolutes. What is torture? A simple explanation is anything that is intentionally done to another which causes pain or causes the person to expect pain for some reason. Be the reason amusement or intelligence gathering or other purpose. But then again, what is torture? Our prisons deprive people of the ability to go where they wish when they wish and this causes pain. Is being incarcerated torture? Perhaps to the inmates, but to people on the outside wall, its where the prisoners belong (well more or less) Going to School was torture to me, other children didnt seem to mind but there is no accounting for taste

There was two threads with the same name and multiple duplicate posts, I deleted one, or I thought I did and both are gone which was not my intention

OGE, you are asking which is the lesser of two evils And is this not the essence of life? There are no absolutes
