  1. Could it have been a case of inferring to much to often and when one writes OA is the Honor Society of Scouting, what one actually means is the OA is the Camping Honor Society of The Boy Scout Program Cub Scouts, Venturers (not in Boy Scouts)and Explorers (not in Boy Scouts) are not eligible so to say Scouting is wrong, but once you OA, the Boy Scout and Camping is assumed, right?
  2. Just to be sure, the pronunciation I am familiar with is Po-Lock, Pollack is the last name of an actor/director or a fish. I always thought Pole or Poles were fine references
  3. The Uniform is a Vestigal Organ, Excise It!
  4. Awhile back I read Stendhals "The Red and the Black", I got an appreciation on why some would oppose Democracy, or government by the masses So, the reason why the US, Britain, France, and the rest are pursuing military action against Libya is because of the UN Resolution to provide Humanitarian Relief. The US Administration has consistently said Khadaffi has to go, that Regeime change is required but that we cannot go outside our UN mandate. I am not sure what Humanitarian Relief was effected by the strike at Khadaffi's living quarters but that's ok, I dont ask to understand all military actions If the Arab League was concerned about the citizens of Libya, where is the concern for the citizens of Dafur? Why has not the UN resolved to help those people, allowing for the use of the military in order to provide Humanitarian Aide?
  5. This could be also a post for the thread on how words have changed, but here goes: buckytom, I don't know what part of the country you live in, but I was brought up in the city of Chicago and the western suburbs. I have to tell you, it wasn't until I was 14 I learned dumbpollack was actually two words, not one. When the neighborhood bully would taunt me about my dumbpollack mother, I don't think he was questioning her sexuality, that level of subtelty was not in his armamentarium. Perhaps I should have asked my Polish Grandmother and Grandfather about what pollack meant, but I am not so sure I would have gotten to far saying pollack in their prescence. Now words are just words and to some they have meaning and others they don't. It will tale a long time for me to shake pollack as not derogatory. PS. Madame Marie Curie nee Sklodowska was Polish, she was kinda smart
  6. just a thought, if the Arab League went to the UN, why did not the Arab League lead the attack or at the very least participate? I mean besides Qatar? Why not all Arab League countries?
  7. So, what is being said, is that when we say to Libya, don't kill your citizens, what we mean is we are going to get you sucka? It does seem the more things change, the more they remain the same
  8. My thought is the OA Election Team representing the Honor Society of the Boy Scouts, should be in full complete uniform The problem is, when the uniform becomes the focus, then everything else suffers in deference to bruised egos. Given the reaction the OA team received, and the comments reflected here there seems to be only one solution. Dump the uniform, its such a bone of contention and who is wearing what "illegal" garnishment, it just may be time to just say the uniform is a relic of the past and its time to excise the vestigal organ known as the uniform Then we can concentrate in what's important
  9. So, when Secretary of State Clinton says that we don't want Khadaffi (Sp?) killing his people, that wasn't the real reason for the bombing and missile strikes? Lisabob, you give a good job of explaining why Khadaffi should be gone, but from what I understand, he is not a target.
  10. Why Libya? Why not Egypt? Tunisia? Bahrain? Dafur? Yemen? North Korea? Help
  11. As I remember the politics of Star Trek, they didnt try to legislate whom anybody loved, they truly beleived in respecting the individual
  12. Come to think of it, to take the Bar exam one must be able to read, so why do we need Law Schools? Should not those who wish to be a Lawyer merely read the books and then pass the test?
  13. "We have books. They lay out da "promise" pretty well. Don't most scouters know how to read?" Yeah, most can read, most can read "Guide to Safe Scouting" and we know THAT book is universally regarded the same way all across the length and breadth of the program We know that all Troops do everything the way they are supposed to, I guess Training is just silly, excuse me
  14. How can you deliver the promise if you have never been told what it is?
  15. why would anyone chase away a source of kolachy,Czernina, Kielbasa or Pierogi? My Grandmother and Grandfather were Polish. They tried to only speak English but many of their friends were much more comfortable speaking Polish so they spoke Polish with friends I can see (and hear) the MSNBC headlines now, Mothers Kicked out of BSA Cub Pack for speaking Polish Just what I want to see and hear
  16. I was sorta surprised this did not come up in all the discussions about Teachers and Unions and teaching to the test et al, but I have to give my plan to improve the Educational system. If I was a teacher whose future employment was dependent on how my students performed I would ask for one thing. Students whose parents gave a damn. In any level of education, typically the top students are supported by involved parents/guardians who have given the student clear expectations of what is acceptable and what is not. I am not talking about the anomalies that do occur, I mean the norm. I don't care what you pay teachers, the educaitonal system has students for how long a day? 6-8 hours? What are they learning in the meantime and on week ends and during the summer? Does anyone in their life reinforce what the teacher says matters? We as a society cannot dump the burden of educating our children on the school system and wring our hands about incompentent teachers when Dad and Mom don't care about their kids education. How do we get parents to care? I wish I knew, but until then the blaming of Teacher's Unions and incompetent teachers and "the system" for the "educational crisis" reminds me of the song "Blame Canada" from the South Park movie, especially the ending couplet "We must blame them and cause a fuss Before somebody thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!!!!"
  17. Yiayia's the world over have said "Tha fas ksilo!" for generations and yet their grandchilden don't become homicidal
  18. for all you Horror film and Jack Nicholson fans, I have to do this based on Scoutfish's post Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum, Red Drum ok thats enough and now onto the regularly scheduled program I was perusing the Guide to SAfe Scouting and Gosh and Begorrah I found this in the Preface All participants in official Scouting activities should become familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and be aware of state or local government regulations that supersede Boy Scouts of America policies and guidelines. The Guide to Safe Scouting provides an overview of Scouting policies and procedures rather than comprehensive, standalone documentation. For some items, the policy statements are complete. Unit leaders are expected to review the additional reference material cited prior to conducting such activities. In situations not specifically covered in this guide, activity planners should evaluate the risk or potential risk of harm, and respond with action plans based on common sense, community standards, the Boy Scout motto, and safety policies and practices commonly prescribed for the activity by experienced providers and practitioners. Beavah was right, just a second, I'll wait until the shock wears off... ok thats enough, the Guide to SAfe scouting is "an overview of Scouting policies and procedures rather than comprehensive, standalone documentation" thatt whole second paragraph sounds like Beavah could have written it especially the "safety policies and practices commonly prescribed for the activity by experienced providers and practitioners." So, good thats enough for me for now
  19. BadenP, I am confused, I said: "avoid Sheath Knives but there is no prohibition" I was repeating what the Guide to Safe scouting says "Avoid Sheath knives" and then I added "But there is no prohibition? SO obviouly one can use sheath knives. If I confused you, I am sorry as I have often said there is no BSA prohibition against sheath knives which is what I think you are saying as well. Match the job to the tool and use them all safely The real question is is the guide to safe scouting part of BSA literature/publications or not?
  20. I am willing to rush in where angels fear to tread, so my one word answer will follow my explanation This is the obvious (to me) answer so Raise
  21. So, I spun this from the thread on Sheath Knives, the Guide to Safe Scouting says: A sharp pocketknife with a can opener on it is an invaluable backcountry tool. Keep it clean, sharp, and handy. Avoid large sheath knives. They are heavy and awkward to carry, and unnecessary for most camp chores except for cleaning fish. Since its inception, Boy Scouting has relied heavily on an outdoor program to achieve its objectives. This program meets more of the purposes of Scouting than any other single feature. We believe we have a duty to instill in our members, youth and adult, the knowledge of how to use, handle, and store legally owned knives with the highest concern for safety and responsibility. Rememberknives are not allowed on school premises, nor can they be taken aboard commercial aircraft. So, avoid Sheath Knives but there is no prohibition Now, I am reading comments that either there is no clear policy on sheath knives, or that nothing in official BSA literature/publications mention this issue and I have to ask, Is The Guide to Safe Scouting part of BSA literature/publications or not? Or because in the title it says "Guide" so it doesn't have to be followed?
  22. Be sure to be very careful today, because, well because you know... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-hyfMwsZwg
  23. Not sure what is most distressing, the punk and the jerks or the Troop that allows them to flourish ,,, You don't need the "Scout Spirit"requirement you (The Rhetorical You, not you presonally) need to gather yourselves up and say no and then let the fmily make their choice
  24. This is the section on knives from the Guide to Safe Scouting A sharp pocketknife with a can opener on it is an invaluable backcountry tool. Note this sentence: "We believe we have a duty to instill in our members, youth and adult, the knowledge of how to use, handle, and store legally owned knives with the highest concern for safety and responsibility." Not sure how you would label this politically corect, to teach youth to use the best knife for the purpose at hand. Rarely for the camping that is done in "most" Troop Campouts are sheath knives the best choice, but if one is, then fine, there is no prohibition against it. Use it as you would any tool
  25. Pack, I would but she studies the bible and knows enough to take scripture verses in context, the entirity of that quote comes from Ephesians 22 33 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church 30 for we are members of his body. 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 32 This is a profound mysterybut I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. She says Yeah, I have to submit to you and I have to respect you but you, my dear husband must LOVE me and it doesnt say I have to LOVE you back This teaching women to read may not be all its cracked up to (That last sentence was a joke, I hope no one was offended and apologize if anyone was or is)
