"I rejected beer a few years ago. Does this mean I have to resign from Scouts" Resign from scouts no, but it does make me question whether or not YOU are American "Woof" Is a line from a movie, Kathleen Turner spoke it, name the movie(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy... if you don't want Obama as president (and I don't, not because I don't think he is not American but because I disagree with his policitcs, can we get someone who is better and as charismatic and is eletable and drop the birther claim?) I see all this energy and passion and wonder where is it regarding a suitable challenger,

Well now, there is something I agree with

" the constitution is just a set of suggestions to use if convenient and discard otherwise " THAT is the attitude of most of Washington and the source of most of our problems." Oh come on now, the Constitution, when all boiled down, is just a bunch of what some may regard as silly rules and I have already been told many times that if you think a rule is silly, you just decide not to follow it before the election, many said Obama was not qualified to run the country, that his policies were flawed and here we are, arguing about his "right" to be president while he gets ready to campaign for another term. WHy not spend all the time and energy spent on "birther" agendas on developing actuall solutions and communicating those ideas so we dont have to worry about Obama version 2.0? Would Obama have been elected if there was a real message from the other side We often see said on the forum that when people can't argue view point, they start with the ad hominem attacks. Birther issues are an ad hominem attack, why attack the man when his policies, record and competence are so flawed?

21 As Required Age For Unit Leaders
OldGreyEagle replied to SeattlePioneer's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So, if you are under 21 you can be a youth in the Venturing program so naturally you couldnt be a leader until your 21 and besides in the OA you are considered youth until you are 21 so 21 is the cut-off, got it? (Now, just don't think about over 18 asst scoutmasters and you will do fine) -
The 100 hours is a "Arrgghhh Guideline", it came about when the Eagle Application form changed. Now they ask for how many hours the candidates project took. Well the 100 hours is a guideline in the council I serve, Why? Because its the most asked question, how many hours should an Eagle project take? As many as it takes to finish the job was my first answer, but then comes the question of scope. If you say it should take 100 hours, then the scout can see how "big" the project should be and how many people it takes et al. Now, if it takes less than 100 hours, no biggie as there is no requirment for hours but I can tell you if an Eagle project comes in at 45 hours, there are lots of questions. So, 99 hours is fine and 45 is not, 98 is fine but 46 is not. At what point does it meet? There is none, each case is separate and distinct. As for 40 point check lists? I agree they are stupid, but after many years in the Advancement game, I understand how they could evolve. Somebody got a bug up their butt that so&so's Eagle project from that troop over there was not a "real" Eagl project and caused a ruckus and the answer was to be sure everyones project was above reproach and to do so, voila, the check list. The concept of telling the complainers to take a hike is not an option, I guess.

Violence? I thought Arizona politicians were going to tone down the rhetotic... Referencing the Super Bowl? Lets think about the NFL, Billionaire owners and millionaire players who can't agree how to split the billions of revenue. Yeah, thats the people to model Sport is entertainment, the Super Bowl CHamps are as politically important as Lady Gaga

Sorry, No, you do not really want term limits. If you limit congressmen to 2 terms in a very short period of time the most powerful people in DC will be the staffers, the guys who direct the Freshmen congressmen and senators to the Metro, who help arrange living quarters et al. Just when they will be getting used to the situation you want to throw them all out? Just a thought, Congress has a lousy rating, as it should, but how do most people generally regard their COngressman? Usually quite well or the recidivism rate would not be so high for COngressmen There is a saying that People Get the Goverment they deserve, we need to look in the mirror and decide what type of government we want and what we will do to attain it

Thats the great part of internet forums, you get glimpses of how things are done not in your backyard I had always thought the Eagle Leadership project was the culimination of the scouts training, he already has leadership skills learned during his POS time since Star Scout, the Eagle Project is not to learn leadership skills, its to hone them Perhaps its a triffle, but if a life scout has to learn leadership, the program has failed My opinion only as always

If EDGE is bad/wrong/poor, How do you Teach Youth to Teac
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Working with Kids
"OldGreyEagle writes: the worst part of Internet Forums is going back to explain yourself when you thought you hit it out of the park I agree." That has to be the nicest thing Kudu has ever said to me, so I retire on that note, I can accept I don't have the tools to communicate what I was attempting -
Moose, you said "COR could not fire the SM", because she doesn't think she has the power?, She does, but I think you know that. She can't because she lacks the courage? I could see that actually depending on local politics, but again, for a group that want to follow National Rules, ask them where it says its ok to have Scoutmaster Election is the first place, or is that stirring things too much? Universally, I think we all think working with the youth is great, its the adults, the gr'ups that cause the biggest problems
-
Sorry for the mess Moose, but if they are so fixated on not going against National "rules", why are they "electing" a Scoutmaster?
-
A few years back one long term scouter thought it would be a good idea to invite all the scoutreach adult leaders to the Distrct Dinner, and as a show of charity, have the District COmmittee fund the endeavor, he was chargrined when he found out that the Scoutreach leaders get paid for being scout leaders. A fact that escaped his attention THen again, the OA chapter has done some good things http://www.oa-bsa.org/programs/mentoring/mentoringnq.htm The biggest issue I have with Scoutreach is they are supposed to be part of the Scouting Program yet there there are Scoutreach events and "Traditional unit" events. I thought scouts were scouts
-
perhaps Obama just figures proving he is eligible to be president is a silly rule and he decided not to follow it he can you know, not following silly rules is an American right so there, it proves he is American
-
well then,I disagree

The National Outdoor Badges, how do they contribute to the demise of the Outdoor Program? http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Youth/Awards/NOA.aspx
-
That's right, we need a business man for President, someone who will stand up for us, who will go to Harry Reid and say if you dont do as I say, your fired. Wait, no one can fire Harry Reid except the citizens of Nevada and that election isn't for another few years or so so , onto to Nancy Pelosi, surely Trump can fire her, oh wait, only the people in her congressional district can fire Ms Pelosi. Heck the Government for the people by the people is just about as tough to manage as this boy lead stuff

Back, way back, before anyone had heard of Obama my sister in law was terrified, frazzled and generally gobsmacked that Hillary Clinton, That woman, was going to be president Then the Primaries started and Hillary was doing quite well and then Obama started to come on, Hillary tried everything she could to beat back Obama and came up short. Now, the Clinton's are known to be some pretty tough campaigners and Hillary pretty much thought the Presidency was hers by right. If there was a scandal to be broken, the Clintons would have done it in the primaries. If the Clinton machine could not come up with "birthing dirt" on Obama, it doesnt exist. Here is a thought, how about comming up with an intelligent, well spoken candidate (WHich ever sex they are) who can get their points across easily who explains what they stand for, demonstrates it in their daily life, guides others to do the same and enables us to see the plan? Is that to much to hope for?

I don't know what the hub bub is about, its all aboutnot following stupid rules and we already know we get to ignore stupid rules if they get in the way of what needs to be done BTW I hope everybody has a working knowledge of Hyperbole

If EDGE is bad/wrong/poor, How do you Teach Youth to Teac
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Working with Kids
Thank you KC9 for being polite and scoutlike, I can accept I don't understand what you are trying to say. -
"I would rather have Brave scouts over Obedient scouts when it comes to stupid rules." I did not know the Scout Law was multiple choice, taking three from column A and two from column B Who gets to decide what are stupid rules? We talk about people who do not beleive the rules apply to them and wonder how they got that way and then we decide which stupid rules we will not obey Perhaps our example is so loud they can't hear what we say We have met the enemy, and he is US Yeah yeah yeah its only a patrol medallion, its only the uniform, they kids love the patches death by a thousand papercuts

If EDGE is bad/wrong/poor, How do you Teach Youth to Teac
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Working with Kids
Still trying to figure out how to teach a skill without an explanation, demonstration, guidance and the enabling the person learning the skill to use the skill Obviously there is much more going on than I comprehend -
You already know the BSA rules, we can't exactly give you permission to break the rules.

Possible Youth Protection Problem?
OldGreyEagle replied to runintherain's topic in Open Discussion - Program
First read this, I know its over a year old, but still http://www.neagle.com/news/education/x1672001550/Gregory-Ritter-a-Teacher-Charged-with-Molesting-a-14-year-old-Boy-Found-Dead t That guy, the one who killed himself was my son's 7th grade teacher. He was a Venturing Crew Advisor and Camp School Instructor. He was a Disney Teacher of the Year in 2000 and universally loved by his students. The school he taught at is in the area the troop draws from, more than half the scouts had him as a teacher Many kids today are teachers because of his influence. When I moved into the area he was established as a well respected Scout leader. I didnt know him that well and noticed he played fast and loose with Youth Protectin guidelines, and when I asked others about it, I was told that was just him, everybody trusted him, I was not to worry. I never did trust him but I believed others. I asked him about his perchant to not follow rules and he said what he did was for the kids and he said he would never hurt them I might have prevented what happended but I didnt because I was told he was "OK" even when I knew he flouted rules. I was the unit commissioner for his Venturing Crew Youth protection is not a sometimes thing
