Well my contributions to this thread have to be considered "green" as I keep recycling from old posts. All from this thread. So far I have said in three different posts William Tecumseh Sherman famously said "war is hell", he went on to say a lot more about it, and not in a good way. The gist is, that war is never nice, never glorious and always ugly. As a society we strive very hard not to engage in war (well I hope) and we only go to war when there is no other solution. With the hingsight of time, maybe some other tactic would have been better, but I think I have consistently said that war is abhorrent, The whole idea is not to wage war, I do not beleie I ever said anythng about enjoying death or that I enjoyed killing people Next, equating what I have said about war with the War on Drugs? what about The War on Poverty? The War on Litter? The War against Cancer? I think the head of the NFL Union/Trade Group/Whatever they are now said the NFL Players are at war with the NFL owners, you think I advocate total war in that area? Playing such word games is, well its playing a game with words

I may have hit the jackpot, I have both sides of the argument, BrentAllen and Beavah both against me must be my natural wit and boyish charm

So, when I was growing up in Du Page County and either Harry Volkman or PJ Hoff or whomever was doing the tornado warnings, they always seemed to include Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties, Mind you during this time I was traveling back and forth from Northern Du Page (Wood Dale) to Romeoville, or Lockport weekly to go to high school, Anyway, the corner of Rte 66 (yes that Rte 66) and Airport road right next to Lewis University. I think someone else owns it now, the University that is and that was the boonies, I mean, Joliet?

And I thought I made it clear There are no rules in War

these are quotes from this thread that I have written: there is only one way to fight a war, all out, pedal to the metal and full speed ahead. I had thought we learned from Viet Nam that there is no such thing as a limited war and everytime we try it, its a disaster. War is brutal business and to be succesful, you have to be brutal. You kill who needs to be killed before they kill you. It seems simple enough why do we have to keep "rediscovering it" oh yeah, those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it I Don't know if the end justifies the means, well actually I know that the end does not justify the means, at least the ends does not in the universe of pure reason and logic but in the actual physical world I think you do the best you can with what you got but I think I have consistently said that war is abhorrent, it should only be the very last resort but once the decision is made to make war, then we make total war and do not let up until we acheive our goal. Oh yeah, that means there has to be goal when we start. The whole idea is not to wage war, but be prepared to do so and do so so totally no one thinks of messing with you. I thought that was the idea, What part of the above leads you to beleive that I side with Beavah?

I think I said that

So, I moved from Evansville, Indiana to the St Louis Area in the late 1980's. I was working at a hospital and someone said that so&so's family (a fellow worker) had a big hoosier in it to which I replied, thats a good school , what year did he graduate? It was a few days before anyone could look at me and not laugh, ah, the versatility of the English language Back to the thread

I thought the loss of one life was terrible I don't know where I heard this, it may have been from Walter Cronkite's "20th Century" on Sunday afternoons when it wasnt football season, coming on just before Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, but I thought the estimates of casualties for an invasion of the Japanesse mainland was one million We had to drop two because just one could have been seen as a one and done situation and they can't possibly have another so we dropped two so they knew we just didnt have the one. WHen actually we only had two, well two we could use, we could have assembled another but it would have taken time We dropped two to show we meant business and we would do what it took to win, thats how you win wars, you kill people, this can't be the first time someone has mentioned it is it? The whole idea is not to wage war, but be prepared to do so and do so so totally no one thinks of messing with you. I thought that was the idea,

Brent, I am not sure if you are being antagonistic or not, but did you read this part of my post? "I Don't know if the end justifies the means, well actually I know that the end does not justify the means, at least the ends does not in the universe of pure reason and logic but in the actual physical world I think you do the best you can with what you got" Please pay particular attention to : "...at least the ends does not in the universe of pure reason and logic but in the actual physical world I think you do the best you can with what you got" I think Truman made the best informed decision that he could make given the facts at the time. He did the best he could with what he had. The atomic bombings in Japan not only ended WWII but also gave Russia something to think about as we moved swiftly from WWII to the COld War and China in North Korea to think about as well. With the hingsight of time, maybe some other tactic would have been better, but I think I have consistently said that war is abhorrent, it should only be the very last resort but once the decision is made to make war, then we make total war and do not let up until we acheive our goal. Oh yeah, that means there has to be goal when we start. In Japan, the immedicate goal was ending the war with as few more American lives lost as possible. I think we accomplished that and ended up destroying only 2 Japanesse cities opposed to the number that would have been destroyed in an invasion. So, actually I think I agree with you but I am not sure

http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss07.aspx#e this is what the GUide to Safe Scouting says Archery and Knife and Tomahawk Throwing These are approved activities for Boy Scouts and Venturers following the Sweet 16 of BSA Safety SInce there is no mention of prohibition, then you are allowed to do it. You have your qualified expert, have the range set up as directed and have a good time, I would say have a good safe time but that always sounds oxymoronic, especially when said to youth

C'mon Man! No Alcohol in Camp is just a silly rule and we all know if you know a rule is silly, you don't have to follow it, leave the guys alone
-
"I'm BRAVE enough to accept that being REVERENT to my God sometimes requires that I not defer to their god." Gee you go away for a few days and miss all the fun JoeBob, when you say "their god" are you talking about Islam? Because I am pretty sure Christians, Jews and Islam worships the God of Abraham, I Don't know if the end justifies the means, well actually I know that the end does not justify the means, at least the ends does not in the universe of pure reason and logic but in the actual physical world I think you do the best you can with what you got

Just a crazy thought here, so it is not the governments job to take away a mans' property and deprive him of the right to make a living. Taxing how far he drives, where he goes, what he owns, that is beyond the governments purview
-
well, yeah

Acco, I must apologize for all the bad things I have thought and said about you, apparently you DO know Jack after all...

Never question an ex-seminarian, especially a ROman Catholic one, if he knows Latin, leastwise not form my era... Now, as to why Beavah should know who he is talking to, he has a right to his opinion regardless of who he is talking too and if it changes based on who he is talking to, then he is not the Beavah he and I think he is

I may be mixing some metaphors, but hey thats me William Tecumseh Sherman famously said "war is hell", he went on to say a lot more about it, and not in a good way. The gist is, that war is never nice, never glorious and always ugly. As a society we strive very hard not to engage in war (well I hope) and we only go to war when there is no other solution. You kill who needs to be killed before they kill you. It seems simple enough why do we have to keep "rediscovering it" oh yeah, those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it We got Bin Laden, we move on Oh yeah , JoeBob, as Mayor Shinn once told his daughter Zaneeta, watch your phraseology! )(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

this is what the Guide to Safe Scouting says Unit Responsibilities Adult leaders of Scouting units are responsible for monitoring the behavior of youth members and interceding when necessary. Parents of youth members who misbehave should be informed and asked for assistance. The BSA does not permit the use of corporal punishment by unit leaders when disciplining youth members. The unit committee should review repetitive or serious incidents of misbehavior in consultation with the parents of the child to determine a course of corrective action including possible revocation of the youths membership in the unit. If problem behavior persists, units may revoke a Scouts membership in that unit. When a unit revokes a Scouts membership, it should promptly notify the council of the action. The unit should inform the Scout executive of any violations of the BSAs Youth Protection policies. Each Cub Scout den and Webelos Scout den and each chartered Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity Scout team, and Venturing crew shall have one leader, 21 years of age or older, who shall be registered and serve as the unit or den leader. The head of the chartered organization or chartered organization representative and the local council must approve the registration of the unit or den leader on the appropriate form. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss01.aspx#c Then again, the BSA is not going to have guidelines on what to do in every circumstance nor would I want it to. Such things as you describe need to be handled at the local level by people close to and familiar with the situation
