Beach? Beach? Beach? Ed how can you seriously talk about a beach when you just know that will get sand in our pie
-
Camping is never going to provide specifics of course not, you need more information like is it Backpacking, Winter, Summer, Summer Camp,or a float trip, all are different types of camping. Just about the specific thing is LNT and we know some even argue against that
-
How about if we all live each day of our lives acording to the principles of the Scout Oath and Law and then we don't have to worry

Have you talked to your Advisor?

Cub Scouting Hurting Boy Scouting?
OldGreyEagle replied to bigbovine's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Upon further review I love the Venturing Program, especially outdoor Venturing, but one thing I learned early on was that High Adventure = High Cost. If you go indoor climbing a couple times a month to get experince and then buy outdoor climbing gear it adds up real fast. You can get an outfitter to go white water rafting or kayaking for a sum, or buy the equipment yourself and that ain't cheap neither. Back packing is not inexpensive either, to get a good tent you wont be buying it at Wal Mart, then there is the frame, etc Could it be that high adventure costs are impacting the program as well? OK, the leader gets the proper equipment, what about the rest of the troop? -
Cub Scouting Hurting Boy Scouting?

I agree with Ed and BadenP. I think the quesiton is, can we find leaders who either have the skills to do high adventure or have the inclination to learn how to do high adventure and have the time and money to get the required training/experience and coin to buy the equipment and time away from family to make the unit work. I would second BadenP's assertion regarding Scoutmasters who car camp need to go away, but I am afraid that would cut perhaps 50% of the scoutmasters in the District I serve. We have energetic younger parents coming in, but few want to learn to sleep outdoors, it may be a generational thing. Now, in parts of the ccountry I am sure there will be amusement in some who read these word, but the urban population is not all that ahankerin' to get in the woods, least from what I can see(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
the title of this thread is "Fake Uniform" and no matter what the altuistic reasons are, that shirt that you buy and pretend is a Boy Scout Uniform will always be a "fake Uniform" and is that what you are about?

Thanks Emb, I had thought they did away (they being the BSA) with the National Venututing Committee, but I am not dialed in nationally But this section is new correct? At least new since the beginning of the year? Just like the death of overnight patrol outings a paragraph appears and thats is. Think they could do a look whats changed section in the website?

Please do not make me channel Kudu, oops too late... Not let an Eagle Scout run for SPL because he doesnt need a POR? What part about Boy Lead do they not understand? The troop does not exist to make Eagles, it exists to provide the program, there is a difference
-
I beleive most of the coed overnight activities policy is counterintuitive, as is the National Venturing Comittee for thinking it can dream up a national policy that is up to BSA standards, I had thought that was what the local "boots on the ground" unit volunteers did, seeking to instill the values of the oath and law

Blanc, may I gently remind you that Venturing Crews may have an interest in OutDoors Sports Arts and Hobbies Youth Ministries Sea Scouts and their program could be soley one of those areas or they could ecletic and do a mixture A Youth Ministries or Sports, or Arts and Hobbies Crew may never have occasion to Camp. Sleeping on a ship may be considered camping to some, I guess it depends on the size of the boat(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

I wonder if encouragement from the dominant male force in his life would help a bit as it seems Scouting doesnt get praised much from that venue -

the Districts do "approve" the Eagle Projects, he just reviews them to be sure they are complete, that's what started the imbroglio -
After the change regarding Patrol Campouts, I started checking the Guide to Safe Scouting more than once a year, I just saw this on the BSA website http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss01.aspx Coed Overnight Activities Policy All Venturing activities shall conform to the ideals and purposes of the Boy Scouts of America. In order to ensure that all coed overnight activities for Venturers and invited guests at crew, district, council, regional, or national levels meet proper moral standards, the national Venturing Committee has established the following policy: 1.The crew Advisor (or Skipper) or council Scout executive must give careful consideration to the number of adults necessary to provide appropriate leadership for both male and female participants. The number of adult leaders required by the hosting facility or organization (such as a BSA national high-adventure base) must be provided. 2.Adult leaders must be 21 years of age or older and be approved by the committee chairman and chartered organization. 3.Separate housing must be provided for male and female participants. 4.An adult male leader must be housed with the male participants. An adult female leader must be housed with the female participants. 5.Written parent or guardian approval is required for each Venturer or guest under 18 years of age. Is this new? I don't seem to remember it at all. Written parental permission? Seems a bit of a backward step for a group that is to be youth run, and not just youth lead. COmments?

I was off on a "Beaver Weekend", the COuncil holds them in preparation of the Summer Campseason. Troops come and get to camp free and help ready the camp for the Summer, the troop I serve painted an addtion on the Econ building. I asked for a name so I when I called irving, I could ask for someone, I did call Irving about noon on Friday and got to talk to someone who gave me his email so I can reference what he said The question involves fundraising for Eagle Projects. The registrar is saying the Eagle candidate cannot ask for donations from the sponsoring organization of the project. Now, we all know an Eagle leadership service project cannot merely be a fundraiser, thats not the issue. Nor can a scout stand in front of the local Wal-mart and beg for money for his project nor commandeer an intersection goinf ffrom car to car looking forlorn. But I think a scout can ask the congreation of his church for funds for an Eagle Project that will beneift the Church. The Church may or may not be the chartering organizatio for the troop, but is the sponsoring organization for the project. The registrar says anytime a scout gets a monetary donation, then the donor must get something of value for the money. I understand that, but I said I felt the Congregation was getting the project done for them, and that was the item of value. THe registrar disagrees and won't process any Eagle application or project that describes such conduct Its actually molehill stuff, but this is getting emotionally charged the longer it goes on. There are many who think the way I do and there are some who support the registrar. The guy in Irving concurred with my view, I am waiting for a confirming Email I want to thank everyone who has sent me PM's, that is what makes a forum a community, people help, sharing,(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

The issue involves the Council Registrar whom I find tends not to the most "trustworthy" of sources. No one at the Council Office will go against him even when he is wrong, which has occurred. Before I challenge him on one of his latest forays I want to know what is what from a source that is not him -

excellent idea, who is that and do you have an email address? -
There is an issue in the Council that I serve which will need an authoritative reference. Who is the highest ranking professional in Advancement these days and email would be a bonus

Sorry Beavah, I choose not to, I have to much experience with you to try to use my ability to express myself in a manner you will understand on this issue BTW, Thanks for all you do for the youth and the Program
