NO, (just wanted to prove I could answer a yes/no question)

P Swigs, I meant my questions to be thought provoking, not inflamatory. If they seem so, it was not my intention

To a vegetarian, the eating of all meat is a perversion, while to some Jewish and Islamic sects the eating of pork is a perversion. To strict adherents of the Christian Science faith, seeking medical assistance is perversion. As I understand history, the early christians worshipped one God while the rest of the Roman Empire followed a polytheistic religion. To the citizens of Rome, I am sure the Christians were considered perverted. Some things that are considered perversions by others I dont understand, while what constitutes normal behavior by some is abhorrent to me. To be repentant means you are sorry for what you did because you realize it was wrong. How can you be repentant if you beleive you did nothing wrong? I think the term perversion is a judgement applied by an Observer about a situation/action that Observer cant personally comprehend. Amazing Program Concepts, (but who are they?)
OldGreyEagle replied to robinb's topic in Open Discussion - Program
well, Mafikeng is the name of the towm that Lord Baden-Powell hung on to after being surrounded by vastly superior forces and made him an English National hero. I think the troop is paying homage to B-P -
This is from a comment made in the San Deigo thread, I thought it deserved a place of its own What is morally straight? Does it mean you cannot be a scout leader if you were ever divorced? Does morally straight mean you have to be a virgin until your wedding night and can never contemplate being a scout leader if you werent? Could you ever have used illegal drugs, snuck a beer while underage, disobeyed your parents? When we say moraly straight, I think it means many different things to many different people. I would like to see how the phrase "morally straight" is defined. The scout oath has been with us for a very long time. Did morally straight always mean no homosexuals? When the BSA argued against allowing Gay leaders, did they invoke the "morally straight" phrase or was it based on the constitutional right that as a private organization we get to make up our own rules, especially regarding membership. What act in the past, not including child endangerment or molestation, would preclude a person from being a scout leader? I look forward to a frank exchange of opinions

...Then again words are just words... I have to re-state my views from previous postings. I do not know the studies you have read, I do not know the statistics you have, but I do know many gay men and women and have a hard time finding filth and degradation in them. I beleive homosexuality is a real and not learned or acquired or a mistake of nature. I also support BSA'a position because as a private organization we get to choose our own standards. I am glad San Diego turned out the way it did, the grounds around there are beautiful. -
Does anybody know where I can get the sheet music for the song "Scouting Thunder"? We have some bagpipes lined up for my son's Eagle Court of Honor and would like to have this song played

You need to ask the Scoutmaster that if the scout gave him the application when the merit badges were done, would he have signed it. Still not answered is the question if the leadership requirement was fulfilled at the same time as the project and merit badges. As far as the "stories" of being wild etc, Does the troop have documentation that the scout was told he was wild and this would impact his Eagle? And the behavior continued? Perhaps the driving the right now is the mother, but if the scout earned the Rank, he deserves the rank. If anyone chokes when I ask for documentation from the troop about a conference between a scout and scoutmaster concerning rank, this comment comes from experience. We had a similar situation and the boy appealed it to council and won. if you or the scoutmaster are planning on denying Eagle to the scout, you should be sure you can prove everything that is alleged. DO I like taking this approach? NOT AT ALL, was I totally frustrated and irritated when I saw my "test" scout wearing an Eagle badge? COMPLETELY!!! I hate scouting has gone this way, but to protect the integrity of the rank, it must be done -
The greatest part of being part of the greatest country in civilization is our ability to disagree and discuss issues. JM While I agree ADD and ADHD are terms of the nineties, They are both real physical conditions. When I was in grade school back in the 50's/60's I had a few classmates who could not sit still, could not "stay on task" and would constantly talk. The teachers went crazy trying to change these kids. The teachers said they were behavior problems, they didnt apply themselves, wouldnt pay attention. I think they were ADD, but no one had a word for it. ADD and ADHD have been around us for a very long time. Remember Einstein coulnt pass high school math? He was most likley ADD. While I agree ADD/ADHD gets overdiagnosed, it is also a very real condition. As has been commented here, the program shouldnt change, but to expect an ADD child to stand quiet for any length of time is not realistic either

I have a question mwhittington about the scout in question. You said he had done his Eagle project 2 years ago and had been inactive in the troop, I take that to mean inactive since completion of the Eagle Project. When he did his Eagle project, did he have all his merit badges done or were they done shortly after? (2-3 months)? If he had sent in his Eagle Application within 4 months of completion of the Eagle Project, would the Scoutmaster have signed it then? How many scouts make Eagle at 15 or 16, submit applications, receive Eagle and are never heard of again? Are they still Eagles? Should the fact this scout delayed his application cause him to be denied Eagle? As I read the requirements, the scout is to hold a position of leadership for 6 months while a Life Scout, did the scout fulfill this requirement? If he did, and completed all his merit badges and completed his project then he is an Eagle. The fact that he has been inactive for 2 years after that, while regretable, should not effect his receiving the award. He "earned" Eagle when his merit badges, project and leadership requirement was met. As much as I abhor paper Eagles, I would also not appreciate denying an Eagle based on the paperwork being delayed, as long as it is in before his 18th birthday. Yes, some may argue that just earning Eagle and dropping out is wrong, and I beleive it is, but I also wouldnt want this scout to feel the wrath caused by other scouts -
Robin No, the 1:2 ration is not compulsory at all. Its just that that is what is usually is. We have a lot of active parents in the troop that like to be together. As new boys come in, we try to share our fellowship with the new parents. They want to come out and partake in the fun. I was actually just bragging
-
Hey BigBeard, Take it easy on youself. You learned, the scouts learned, you will be more vigilant, as will every one connected with the troop. It may be time to move on and not rehash the events. Start the troop looking forward to Klondike and emphasis what's good in scouting.

Keep with 3 patrols and give the patrol or patrols that recruit scouts some type of premium

Try these from the MacScouter Website http://www.macscouter.com/Skits/BBSkits_T-V.html#Heading343 Trimming the Christmas Tree The Twelve Days of Christmas

The only requirement we have for parents on campouts is that the scouts come first. Recently we had a joint Venture/Scout Whitewater trip. A Scouts mom comming allowed us to have our female ventures stay overnight. The mom didnt beleive us when we said she wouldnt have to cook or clean and was thrilled beond belief when our predictions all came true. Chalk up another enthisiastic adult leader that was passively recruited. if a non-scout comes along as in the 6 year old case, the only rule is the family has to take care of the child. Then again, if we dont have a 1:2 ratio of adults to scouts, and we usually have 20-25 scouts on a trip, we are down in leaders Invite and school them into letting the kids do it, it works!!!
-
I am not so sure you can refuse parents to come along on a Camping Trip. Boy Scouts is an open program and I cant see how you could intentionally keep parents away. Besides, most of the registered leaders we have come from parents just tagginf along and then seeing how much fun the "regulars" have and more importantly see that no one person has to work like a dog. I wouldnt ever think keeping parents away is a good thing, but then, thats just my opinion
-
Perhaps its because you never value what you have until it is lost or threatended, then we realize what it would be like to do without. Think what it would be like to do without Freedom, Liberty, having virtual heroes at our beck and 911 call. For all those treasures and many more to many to list, may the Great Scoutmaster of all the scouts bless us and keep us (the whole world) close
-
Lets try to kill two birds with one stone. You also said your parents dont want to stop doing for their kids. Try this, next campout get all the parents together and tell them that when they wake up, to only get their food going. Let the kids sleep. Let them sleep to noon if they want. But DO NOT do anything for them. Be sure to let them know what they missed by sleeping late. Stick to this routine, its particularly effective if your at a Camporee and they miss events. Dont use cold water or a cattle prod, let them learn the consequence of their actions (WHAT A CONCEPT)

Now that's entertainment, remember the primary focus of scouts FUN

PS Eisely is right, dont get stuck on the noise the animal might make. In Scoutmaster Training I was in the Black Buzzard patrol. Our call? The first version was Dead Meat, Dead Meat, I suggested a single word at the end and it came out DEAD MEAT, DEAD MEAT, CARRION (Carry on)

SCTMOM, Hail to the Victors works even better when no one knows it is a college's Alma Mater. Besides, THE BIG CHILL was set in the south, but the college they all attended? University of Michigan and Eisely, I am not the OLDGREYEAGLE for nothing, emphasis on the first syllable
-
Actually I am not an University of Michigan fan, more of a Northwestern man myself. But, remember, all of Michigan's teams are the wolverines. And the boys dont have to know that, as far as they know, they are cheering themselves as the victors.
