  1. In the words of the immortal Ron Moody as Fagin in "Oliver" "I think I'd better think this out again..."
  2. Bridging on Beavah's comment about Marshmellow guns, are they not a prize for Trail End Popcorn? Did not last years brochures show a cup scout with a marshmellow gun shooting at the camera? I have always thought I was a BSA Law and Order kind of guy but a watergun is a simulated firearm? A thousand tiny papercuts
  3. First I will not tell the story about my joruney to find a Cannon Report, suffice to say it ranks with Snipe Hunting and all things wrong with a culture of lets belittle and humiliate the little guys and wonder why they dont stick as members Next, big bang canons work with pulverized calcium carbide and water, they do not blow up they do not explode, they are toys they make noise they are fun I have a big bang canon, heck they make them in the neighborhood. I have muzzle loading guns, they are not the same
  4. Does a toy that is 25" long, 7" wide and 7" high qualify as a cannon or big bore artillery?
  5. I am pretty sure the pants were always part of the uniform, least I always thought so Time to dump the uniform, wear a neckerchief and be done with it
  6. So, who saw Larry the Cable guys show last night? They did segments on Livestock Auctions, New York Longshoremen and the Boy Scouts. What did you guys think? Did he Git-R-Done?
  7. be there to hug, support and love there really isnt not much more you can do
  8. and I thought a scout was friendly, courteous and kind. Referring to someone as "blubber butt" is none of the above. Would we tolerate the scouts calling someone "blubber butt" I hope not
  9. Its a watershead moment Acco, at that point its time to take a deep breath and tell the scout that everyone is not always who they seem to be. Yes, you just may have ended the innocence of childhood, but a scout is brave
  10. So, what do patch collectors do who want a full set of 100th Anniversary patches? Have a son who earned them all in one year? Its not like the BSA knew plenty of collectors wouldnt buy a full set and rank patches and the rest You explain what happened, then consider the matter settled and move one. If someone persists, explain again and move one. Be the rational one, its drives the other side crazy, I know, rational people drive me crazy all the time but they are usually right What is your history in the troop with this peson? Is there something else going on?
  11. Dump the uniform, its a useless battle A few months ago I started my own uniform program. There was one scout, one scout mind you in full uniform, neckerchief, belt, socks, ets and at the end of the meeting I made a presentation of 10 dollars to him for being the only one in complete uniform. The next week I gave 20, then I didnt make a few meetings and then another 10. All these went to the sme scout who is always in full uniform, the other kids don't care. They didnt try to wear a complete uniform and they dont care. The adults in the Troop are fully uniformed, its not a value the kids have. Why beat yourself up? Ditch the uniform, its just not the troubles
  12. Anybody lose any friends in Viet Nam because they stopped to give candy to a kid who was the "booby trap"?
  13. I hope the people who express that the "Uniform Police" can just come after them and have disregard for the Uniform Guide would never fail a scout for a Board of Review because their rank badge was not sewn on the uniform
  14. I had a thought, Society often talks about the insolent behavior of youth and how they have no respect for authority Is it because youth are naturally insolent or because so few authority figures tody actually deserve respect?
  15. I just want to reaffirm whether you are internet savy or guillible we all do play for the same team
  16. while I certainly understand the logic being presented, I am trying to determine that the attitude being presented here of "going alone to get alone" as a life lesson is heroic or tragic I have to work on it for awhile
  17. heck no, you don't have to take the training over, just present the training cards you get at every session and you are golden
  18. I agree with PappaDaddy The honest and honorable thing to do is only carry "active" scouts on your charter. Then you won't have such issues. If the scout doesnt show up for an extended time, and you decide what's extended. Call them, ask them if they wish to continue. Then set with the scout goals, if he does not meet them. Do not recharter him, to me thats honorable, having a scout meet his committments

  20. I agree I wanted to be sure I was not the only one who follows what is printed
  21. A High School in the District where I live won the State title in its Division a few years ago. From that team I know of Three Eagle Scouts, one of which was the starting Fullback. The Drum Major that year also made Eagle. Sports/Band does not spell the end of a scouting career unless the boy/parents want it to. Slows things down? Certainly does, but does not end it. Yes, the scout needs to be organized but thats where parental support (as opposed to parental directing) comes in
  22. So emb, you put no stock in "The official BSA Rules and Regulations that you agreed to when you became a member state the Policy of the BSA: An active youth member is one who, with the approval of a parent or guardian if necessary, becomes a member of a unit; obligates himself or herself to attend the meetings regularly; fulfills a member's obligation to the unit; subscribes to the Scout Oath or the code of his or her respective program; and participates in an appropriate program based on a member's age." ?
  23. Beavah, I will not pretend to think I can understand your reasoning, as we have ample proof in the past that I frequently just don't get what you are pitching so normally I refrain from commenting but I have to this time. If the BSA reverses Dave, how can it be that he is following the official BSA Rules and Regulations?
  24. when I figure out what you wrote Hawkrod, I am sure I will have a reply(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)
  25. Eagledad "filthy beast" is from one of my all time favorite movies lets see, North to South Great Britain is what 683 miles in length? New York to Los Angelos is 2,800 miles. From Ely. Minnesota on the Canadian border to Eagle Pass Texas on the Mexican border is 1,630 miles. I can hear any language in the world by traveling 45 minutes to New York City and walking around town. I can backpack the deep backwoods wilderness of Maine's Allagash, I can take a swamp boat across FLorida's Okefenokee Swamp, there are the badlands of SOuth Dakota, the Majesty of the Rockies and the green lushness of the Pacific Northwest. Along the way I will cross as many cultures and ways of looking at things as anywhere.
