I remember a group of Idealists, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, etc. They studied the Greek Ideal of the dignity of man and, right or wrong, they went against the pervailing notions of the day, that of loyalty to the crown in all circumstances. Were they right or wrong? But, times changed Susan B Anthony was an idealist, She thought a person's sex shouldnt matter when it came to voting rights. I am sure in the real world she was judged harshly by those who disagreed, but was she right or wrong? Now, I am not saying wearing an earring or getting a tattoo measures up to risks and ideals these people took, but I shudder at the dull, dark, repetitive totally realistic world we would have were it not for the flashes and rainbows of idealism

Judge rules for boy in Boy Scouts case
OldGreyEagle replied to Dedicated Dad's topic in Issues & Politics
Anybody who lives the true Wicca lifestyle is ok in my book. Mr LeRoy I almost missed this, So, if the government is not allowed to foist one religion or another or the concept of no religion at all on a person, why does the miltary have chaplains? ( see I learned, I can be trained) You said the military is required to offer religious and moral support. Isnt the required religious support financed by the feds in direct opposition to what you quoted in the first amendment? How do they explain that? -

Judge rules for boy in Boy Scouts case

So, merl, What about the student that wants to sit on the sunny side of the cafeteria and eat his lunch and cant because he is not a fasting whatever and the fasting students get to sit in the sun. Is that religious discrimination? -

WOW, Merlyn, you are one fast responder, you are gonna have to explain who you are and what you do for a living sometime. You work faster than I do. and that Chaplin crack, Humor as well, I guess you loosened up since out last encounter, never saw that one comming..... So, IF the schools allow public access to ALL groups, and the scouting recruitment is done at night, when school is not in session, would the atheist presentation followed by the scout recuitment be ok? And if a scout asked a non-scout friend to come to a meeting, is that ok? Just laying out the boundaries, You said read the courts descision, do you know where I can find it? And thanks for that school thing, even if muslims had asked for space the answer was no, sounds good. Now, if a kid in the cafeteria wanted to eat and liked where the fasting kids were sitting and couldnt sit there because he wasnt going to fast, is that discrimination? -

Hey, Merlyn, have not seen you around in a long time, actually LTNS. I remember you and I and a few others went around and around on the government and religious thing in Oak Park, Ill I think. How have you been? So, because the Scouts discriminate based on religion, that is we require each member to have one, then this means any organization that uses public buildings cant discriminate based on religion. I mean I remember that. So students who meet in public schools cant hold bible readings or group prayers or anything like that, right? Or is it ok for the students to hold the prayer meetings but they have to be more or less spontaneous, not organized by adults/any organization, right? If I remember correctly you were a storehouse of information on this topic. And so I have to ask, it is rumored, and again I just mention rumored, that in either New York or New York City, I cant trace down exactly, that Muslims want a prayer room in the public schools, have you heard this? Or should I put it down as a pure urban legend? Nice to see you again and have a good time expressing your views Oh, and by the way, in the US military there is a position, role, or something called a Chaplin. Is it illegal for the government to employ religious priests, ministers, rabbi's, mullahs? How can these chaplin's hold religious cermonies on US military bases/goverment land and not be in violation of the religious discrimination laws? If they were "caught" trying to convert "non-believers" to their own cause, would they be in violation of the rules? Nice to see you again -
Eagle Scout project: videos for little ones

Well Dad, this is one for the books, like they say, truth is stranger than fiction. The best thing about this forum is we get to see other peoples opinions from all over the country. Eisely is in the San Francisco area, and Weekender is in texas and I think Rooster is in the southeast and I think I remember you being in or around Virginia. I am not sure about others but I probably would think of more if I tried. Anyway, you may or not rememeber that I have said I am in Bethlehem PA and our comittee chair is a pediatrician. She is the one who has trunks of medications at summer camp for our ADD kids, most of for whom she is their physician. Also on Le Voys posting on Eagle Projects I listed various projects I have helped with, one was collecting video tapes for the local Hospital's pediatric dept. Well, last night at our weekly troop meeting, we were congratulating Bobby on the good job he did collecting tapes and the write-up in the newspaper. Then this morning I sneak a peak at this website and I see his name. That guy is from my troop!!! Of all the places I expected to see references made to Bobby's project, this was the last place. Of a side note, the story mentions Bobby was adopted from Brazil by his parents, it doesnt mention that they also adopted Bobby's younger brother as well. Aint truth ( no matter how you define it) weirder than anything you can make up???? -
As I frequent say, times change, and not always for the best or they just change. The last Hospital I worked in had a program for the hourly employees, show up to work for the quarter and get a day off with pay. Just for showing up, what I always thought you were supposed to do, you got rewarded. Never made sense to me, but then, times change and not always for the best

POWER TOOL!!!!!!???????? Hey Hey Hey, in MY Lumberjack merit badge, there wont be any room for noise polluting, air befouling monstrosities. Its only hand powered tools, if it was good enough for Paul Bunyan, its good enough for scouts. Actually upon closer review, the Paul Bunyan Award shows a double bit axe, is it just me, or arent double-bit axes (or is it axi?) not allowed in Boy scouts, but then, why have one on an official patch? Oh the Horror , The Horror

Well, Ahem ::preening feathers:: that was my idea, classic merit badges..... I am not sure these were merit badges, but they would be very intersting along the lines of a classic series Lumberjack: requires parts on axe safetry, how to sharpen a buck saw,how to operate a one man buck saw, how to operate a two man saw (this is a killer if you have ever seen two neophytes go at it), how to determine what direction to fell the tree amoung others I love the blacksmith one Perhaps one called Frontier Pioneering, how to make a sod house, hitch a team of oxen to a cart or wagon, how to care for the oxen, or horses amoung other duties. It would be fun to see todays kids try to use 1860's era tools, wouldnt it? And then the scouts would to aprectiate what they have today

Live Free Or Die One of the best state mottos going A while back I posted something about times change. I could have added in the 60's long hair was considered to be anti social and the beatles were to be the cause of the down fall of civilization. Well, the world survived the beatles and when I see them in old clips I wonder, that was long hair? Then in the mid 90's real short hair came in fashion the kids almost looked evil, until you compared them to kids of the 50's. What can I say, times change A kid with an earring means nothing to me now, 10 years ago i would have freaked. Now its common. Tattoos are a bit different than hair, since a tattoo is with you for life as opposed to a hair style that can be changed. But I think it best we move to a point where a person is judged by the content of their charactor and not by their appearance. Then again, that might just be a dream

Say what you will about Jimmy Carter, but he was one of the nicest men who ever was elected president. The fact Washington DC chewed him up and spit him out tells us more about the flaws in politics than in Mr Carter. He was ineffective because he thought when asked politicians would do the right thing, and not be self-serving. Remember I said he was a nice man, but not exactly as politicaly astute as he could/should have been. And whatever you think of the Carter administration, and there is plenty to feast on, he has become one of the best ex-presidents we have ever had. If its not actually building houses for Habitat for Humanity, not just being a front man, he is in other countries as an observer for emerging countries elections. He could have taken the speakers tour and garnered millions in fees as other ex-presidents have but he has elected to serve humanity, not himself. The world is a much better place because of Jimmy Carter's deeds after his presidency. I am not sure you can say the same about the rest of our living ex-presidents. Ronald Regan gets a reprieve due to his illness of course. If I remember correctly, it was under Regan where ecomomic policies were implmented that allowed Bill Clinton to become president, what was his campaign's slogan to itself? Its the Economy Stupid? After George Bush's (number 41) success in Desert Storm could anyone have seen him losing an election to an already scandal scarred candiate? Reganomics lost the election for the elder Bush and allowed a moral weasel in the Whitehouse. If Bill Clinton has a quarter of Carters integrity, Gore would have won in a landslide. (oh and sorry to get off on a rant here Rooster and I know you said you meant no harm, but dissing Jimmy Carter is one of my hot buttons) Now, why is it that girls can have an ear pierced but a boy cant?

My experience notwithstanding, there are far more advantages to being in the Boy Scouts than not. You commented he likes to give as much as he gets and will probably do quite well and may even pay back the vultures who prey on the weak and innocent. In spite of my hazing experience, being a Boy Scout is one of the biggest highlights in my life, and I am not ashamed to say it. Non-scouters may see this as an opening to say "get a life" and my reply would be, "I have one, Scouting is a big part of it and get oughtta face" The fear of whatever teasing comes his way should in no way overshadow the tremoundous adventures he will have. In a few years you will be asking where did my baby go? The answer is simple, He went to the Boy Scouts and became a man

That you all are commendable scouters eager to lend a helping hand to a fellow scouter in need?

Judge rules for boy in Boy Scouts case
OldGreyEagle replied to Dedicated Dad's topic in Issues & Politics
What if the school set aside time for some one to recruit students to Atheism? Would the scouts be allowed to recruit then? Perhaps Ms Powell would like to present why she thinks Atheism is the way to live, this followed by the scouts recruitment presentation, wouldnt that the be ultimate solution? Not exclusion, but inclusion?
