Judge rules for boy in Boy Scouts case
OldGreyEagle replied to Dedicated Dad's topic in Issues & Politics
Interesting story sctmom posted, reading it jarred soemthing loose in my head. I seem to remember a state, and I cant remember which, had the KKK approach it about "adopting" a stretch of highway. You know, they would keep it clean and all that. The payoff for the Klan would be the sign that would be posted, paid for by state dollars stating that the Klan was responsible for the roadway. Various govermental units turend down the Klan's request and I dont remember if it went to the Supreme court of the state or the US, but the final ruling was if the state was going to accept and make signs for one group, it had to for all the groups. As I recall, that state dropped the adopt a highway program rather than make a sign with the Klu Klux Klan on it. I may be wrong, but I am sure I heard this, or is it Urban Legend? I am sure we have the talent here to verify or deny this. My conclusion is if your troop is chartered by a govermental unit of any kind, depending on your area and political environment, it may be time to start looking for another sponsor. I dont agree with my heart that this is right, but my brain says governmental chartering of boy scout troops may cause problems. We can vow to fight, but I think in the end we will mostly lose and such a fight costs way to much for us to be able to say we did it in the boys interest. Better to find a willing private sponsor now. -

Geez, I thought Trinitarian had to do with the Holy Trinity but I had never in my twelve years as a Roman Catholic Altar Boy, 3 more years in a Roman Catholic Seminary, and 2 years teaching religion classes ever come across the term Trinitarian. Thank you all, I can shut my brain off for the day, I have learned my one thing for the day and I dont want to over do it -

First thing I would do is print the story out about the Boy Scout who collected Videos for the Pediatric Dept. Dedicated dad posted it and I beleive you commented on it. The story makes reference to the fact the scout is adopted. As I commented, the family also adopted his brother. Show her scouting works. Next, offer to accompany her when she visits the troops. As Den Mother oh excuse me Den Leader ::slaps self :: Webelous Leader you can converse with the troop leaders about the scouts abilities and challenges. Try out a few troops, get her and the boys consensus. Scouts, if done in the correct atmosphere, could be the greatest thing for these kids ever. Adopted kids, who know they were adopted, want desparately to be a member of a family, I cant think of a better surragate family than the brotherhood of scouting.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

use a Yahoo chat room??? Why not, that would be knowing your resources and utilizing them, ... where have I heard that before?
-
I am sure you all have the experience of posting a message and due to the timing know another member has just posted something and soon will be reading your post (got that?) What would you guys think of a chat room? I have no idea what it would take from scouter.com to do this, but before I/we ask who would like to do that? Converse real time with sctmom, eisely, and the rest. Of course sctmom and eisely are under no pressure to say anything. Its just an idea. If you think our posts are interesting, can you imagine real time chat????

Seeing his status in the group could cause more outbursts certainly. And I know what you mean about the kids getting tired of his behavior. We have a scout who is 13, if you told him you would give him a million dollars if he would stand in a 3 foot circle for 5 minutes, he would try, but it would neer happen. He couldnt stand in the circle for 5 minutes if you had an ice cream cone as the reward and he could see the cone. The other kids are adapting, they know he is like that and they continue on, best thing for both of them. Is he on any medication? Has it been checked? Our Pediatrician Committee Chair says getting the drug level right is more art than science and may be a long process. Dont look forward to the day when he "snaps to" and "buckles down" its not going to happen. Work with what you got.

Since this topic is obliquely being discussed in relation to public schools I thought giving it its own thread would be less confusing. I would like to know how different troops relate to the chartering organization CO. My troop has got to be unique, we are chartererd by a church. The pastor's son is a life scout getting ready for Eagle. The pastor is our chartering organizaiton rep and the troop treasurer. I know this invovlement is rare. However, I also know that the Chartering Organization is responsible for the adult leaders. If an adult leader harms a scout in any manner, the Chartering Organizaiton may be held legally liable. The Chartering Organization in a sense owns the program. Our troop tried to organize a "garage sale" last year of old equipment, in running down permission to do so we learned the troop equipment actually belongs to the church. The CO owns the program, therfore all the equipment as well, at least that was what I was told. So, how do you relate with your CO's?

Refresh me Chippewa, is this the full blown ADD scout? The one we discussed in "when to advance?" if so typically ADD kids are 2-3 years behind age group in maturity, so while he may be chronologically 13 in a few months, he may behave more like 10-11. Calling him a baby or anything else close wont help. ADD kids also have very poor social skills and will not be embarrassed by being called a babby or any other thing. My guess is that he receives so many taunts from his school mates yours will be lost in the mix. I think you did the right thing, continue to check out each of his "injury" complaints, we all know you have to in case some day something actually does hurt him. Praise him when he does well, correct him when he goes awry and "try" not to let his actions slow down your meetings. When injured perhaps you could assign an assitant scoutmaster to tend to him and have it rotate, once he learns the scoutmaster is not going to jump when he cries, his injury rate may go down. Always tell his parents when an "injury" happens in the off chance it is real and something occurs later that day/evening. Recognize he will have good days and bad, good months and bad ones. His scouting career will always be punctuated by such incidents although they should decline as he gets older. Remember, this is one Boy who needs scouting, hang in there, do all you can to help him, we are behind you!

Ah yes, the serenity of the summer camp evening campfire as dusk closes in and from each side of the camp you can hear the gentle rumble as each honda 1000 watt generator kicks in to provide light and power for palm pilots, PC's and printers. Then again I could use the power to run my CPAP machine so I wouldnt keep the camp up wih my snoring, I dont know, snore... generator noise... snore...generator noise, what do you think?

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, BRAVE, clean and reverent. Scouters have to abide by the same law. While we dont often have to risk our lives in normal everyday life, sometimes doing the right thing takes as much courage as almost anything else. Would the SPL consider resigning? If he doesnt want the job, a resignation would not be out of line. Has anyone told the father the boy doesnt want the position? If resigning would cause the boy problems with his father, and the father wont accept the act his son doesnt want the job, then you have to act. Have a suitable replacement or two in mind before anybody says anything and have an "Emergency Scoutmaster" identified in case the current scoutmaster quits. After your prework have your meeting. As loyal as some maybe to the boy and scoutmaster, the good of all the boys and the overall health of the program is at stake. There maybe be problems, but a year from now, you will reflect back and know you did the right thing.

Hey Mom, fooled you !!! I went back and used the edit function to erase my truth statment. I dont think it would be beneficial to start that here. Actually I enjoy reading Mr LeRoy's posts, he comes from a different angle than I usually beleive, but he is very straight and logical. Having your views challenged is a good thing. -

Are domestic pets (dogs) prohibited from scout meetings?

I would think the concept of a mascot, which I thought was a naval tradition, would only enhance the the base. As long as the animal is well mannered, behaves, is trained, has all necessary veterinarian work on file ( boy is this long) then I cant see how it would be a detriment -
public schools as chartering partners
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
CJ If you cant get your Charter organization rep to attend Scoutmaster Fundamentals, perhaps you need a new rep. I know you have a rep, you have to to get chartered. The Chartering Organization is legally responsible for what your leaders do, if one of your ASM, (heaven forbid) does something untoward to your scouts, the Chartering organization will be liable. Run that by them and see what they say, being a Chartering Oganization is a reponsiblity they should take seriously -
" With idealism, one can quote MLK all they want but, right or wrong, in the real world he will be judged. " This was the comment I was responding to Dad, nothing more, nothing less. I was defending the concept of idealism and applauding its results I am not sure how you made the leap to having democracy legitimize rape from what I said. From the people living in London, what our founding fathers did was treason to the crown. That was the truth to English Citizens. I am not sure how English citizens regard George Washington, et al today, but I hardly think traitors and treason would be words used to desribe him. Times change But please point out where I ever said that times always change what is right and wrong. Rape was wrong when Geroge Washington was alive and its wrong today. Murder was wrong then and its wrong now. Stealing was wrong then and its wrong now. Perceptions of propriety change, But right and wrong does not.
