  1. Scoutparent, I was not referring to you when I made my comment about how could a scientist use data from 1948 to make conclusions that chikdren enjoyed the sex. I was commenting on this statement: "It's even being proposed now by scientists that children enjoy the sex(Kinsey report) and that age of consent should be removed entirely. It was those scientists that I have issue with. I understand just because data is old doesnt mean it shouldnt be used. The ancient greeks had mathematics down pretty good and pretty much established geometry and their work is as true today as it was then. I was talking about a social survey done in an era when most "normal" people would barely acknowledge sexual activity existed, let alone answer quesitons about it. Why not dust off a survey taken in Atlanta in 1850 about the morality of slave owner ship (no offense to Atlanta, its the biggest southern city I can name right now). Would it be fair to the residents in Atlanta to hold them to the attitudes expressed then? Would a survey of church hierarchy about the methods of the Spainish Inquesition done during the Inquesition have any validity towards church officals attitudes now? The Kinsey report was written before the population explosion of the baby boomers, before "THE PILL" before the sexual revolution of the 60's, the herpes epidemic and HIV/AIDS. I would like to hear how the Kinsey report can be used with any validity after those enormous social changes. 2 months old children? Nazi sexual experiments? This is the data that is being used to say the age of consent should be removed? I really cant say I understand what is being debated here, or actually who is on what side. I just had to get clarification when I saw pedophilia being talked about and that some did not consider it abhorrent behavior.
  2. Ah Yes Yaworski, how nice of you to remember the traumas of my youth, but also dont forget the part where I said I was going to make sure that no one had to endure what I did and by looking out for the new kids gained me a base that later allowed me to be elected Senior Patrol Leader. So as hard as it is to beleive, I learned to overcome my handicaps and became almost normal. You would have an argument from my son on the normal part. Being excluded from a group is never easy, and while it may have to be accepted as a part of growing up, that doesnt mean I have to like it.
  3. So how could anybody that remotely calls themself a scientist use data from 1948?
  4. Touche Mike, Good point I think the difference is a scout running for SPL can understand only one will win. If he runs and loses, thats life, I hope he can accept that. The issue that I have seen with AO elections is there is not a single winner. In our council a troop can elect as many eligible candidates as it wants. The only requirement is the scout must receive a majority of those voting. Some times all get in, sometimes a few dont. Its tough to explain to the gawky socially arkward kid that makes every outing and has scouiting skills galore that he isnt in the OA but a charismatic scout who just qualifies is. It is all in the presentation to the scouts before the election. As with many things, the OA is as good as the local volunteers make it. In my area thats not to good.
  5. Which Nobel Prize winner was a pediphiliac? I missed that one. How long ago was the Kinsey report done anyway, I think as long as I can remember it has been referenced and I thought it was as flawed as the day is long. For the record, when I was sexually molested as a child, I certainly dont remember enjoying it
  6. Sounds like a great idea, one suggestion: The kids could take the parents and not just demonstrate, but also teach the skill. "Hey, I taught my Dad how to tie a bowline" "Boy, was Mr OldGreyEagle off on that compass course". "The Blanket stretcher actually held Mr OldGreyEagle" In the old days, (After B-P but before Cable) when I was a scout, our Council had annual "Sidewalk" camps. Each troop camped in a city park in their community and set up displays and exhibits demonstrating various scouting skills. I think that is an idea that should be reborn. Thanks For bringing back those memories(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. 1. What does the abbreviation DSM mean? 2. So, the sexually predator priests of Boston were engaging in normal behavior? Is that the implication? Very disturbing if it is. And next, IF it was "normal", I did not see anyone from the Psych community trying to defend the offenders actions. I guess I have a hard time seeing a talking head on CNN, CNBC,Fox, etc trying to explain how sodomizing a child is normal behavior.
  8. What I was commenting on was the statement "...many people now accept such abhorrent behavior as homosexuality, pedophilia, alcoholism, etc." I am not sure where you all live, but where I do pedophilia is NOT ACCEPTED and I am going to need some convincing before I beleive pedophilia is becomming an accepted mainstream behavior. (Or accepted non-mainstream by anyone other than the perpertrators for that matter)
  9. I am not sure I have been able to follow most of this discussion, but I have to say that there is a heck of a lot of difference between homosexuality and pedophilia. And pedophilia and alcholism
  10. We strive to have the opening ceremony/posting of the colors at 7:00 or as close as we can. People arriving late are held at the door until after the Pledge, Oath and Law. Most get there before 7(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  11. Ah, the joys of a National Program administered by volunteers. The OA in my area does little but talk about the grand plans they have. I have been with my son's troop for 6 years and havent seen an OA rep from outside the troop once. We have elections administerd by our troop OA rep. It appears to be nothing but a popularity contest. It may be different in other places.
  12. Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, All are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.
  13. Don't send an adult to do a boy's job! One of the foundations that scouting is based on is the boy lead troop. Have an election, reduce the requirements, have the boys chose who they think will be the best leader. Next, take the adult who was going to function as the SPL and make that scouter the new SPL's mentor. That way there is a boy in SPL position as there needs to be but he is being coached (and learning) how to be a leader by one indivudual. The mentor should be able to help the SPL re-install the basic fundamentals. I can understand the adults thoughts of it would be just easier if I/we did this ourselves, but why waste such a great educational opportunity.
  14. I guess it all depends on what is, is What is happening in that park, and any park where homosexual activity is in the open is flat out wrong. As would be any type of sexual activity. I agree with NJCubScouter however, I would hate to have heterosexuality be defined by the behaviop of those revelers at Mardi Gras where puplic copulation is not unknown. Nor would I say that the publized carnal indulgences of "Spring Break" accurately portray the overall morals of all college students. Any transgression of the law should be dealt with according to the law.

  16. Yeah, gotta take your hat off to those wacky Nazi guys, they built Tremblinka, Dachau, etc and engineered those ovens and gas powered showers while truly appreciating the plundered art of the Jewish families they destroyed and the European villages they conquered.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  17. Our Committee Chair is a woman and a Pediatrician, although she plays nothing on TV. She makes alot of the campouts. I cant tell you I have seen a discernible difference in behavior in the the boys or the adult leaders when she is there or not. I have read the posts and dont understand alot of the ideas presented. Then again, I dont uderstand a lot of things.(as many here will point out). Whether she is there or any other of our lady ASM's scoutmasters are, I wouldnt expect anyones behavior to change. If you are living the scout law, your mother could be invisible along side you and would be proud of every step you take.
  18. My son's Eagle project was to collect the old and replace with new American flags at the graves of veterans in 5 local Cemetaries. Then he collected flags from schools and other governmental units and the general public. The second part was to MC a Flag Retirement ceremony. To add to what Yaworski said, mt son found only one offical reference on flag retirement According to Title 36, section 176, of the United States Code: "No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America;" Paragraph K of this same section, states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." As it turned out, he was able to have an open fire, about 4x6, all "regular" size flags had string tied on the corners and were brought over the flames. The rising hot air would billow the flag up and the scouts would slowly lower the flag towards the flames. Most of the time the flag never touches the flames, it burst into flames and virtually disintigrates. The smaller flags were bound into 50 flags bundles and brought over the flames as well. I attended a 9/11 Memorial which included a mass Flag Retirement. All the people there who had experience retiring flags all had different views on how it was to be done. Cut the flag apart first, never cut the flag, place each flag in the fire and wait it to burn, vs pile them on. We had as many opinions as people there. You will find many reference on the Internet concerning Flag Retirements, the key component, each flag is to be retired with dignity and respect. I can send you the script from his ceremony if you leave your Email
  19. From the OA website it states: "The fifteen days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps." http://www.oa-bsa.org/misc/basics/
  20. ...And I thought this would be tough, easy' Dr. Raymond Stantz on top of what was Dana Barrett's apartment when Zuul asked them to choose their form of destruction ... I aint afraid of no ghosts...
  21. This may help the first timer get organized, the ultimate authority is the current book. In our troop it tends to take 3 meetings to get it done. (meetings with the scout, not troop meetings, of course) http://meritbadge.com/files/mb-docs/First%20Aid.doc
  22. Try this link, the last line states the only deadline for completion of a merit badge is before the scouts 18th birthday. BTW: It also says there is no rule against a counselor signing for a son, relative, ward, etc as well Now, this is not an "official" BSA site, but I find it accurate http://meritbadge.com/bsa/info/policy1.htm
  23. I think Yaworski has hit gold, Boy Scout pants with faux "boxer" trim sewn in. The trim would be 2.5 inches wide with an elastic waistband and the print would be the fleur de lis, or OA symbol or even ranks. Since the trim would be 2.5 inches, no more could ever be seen and every boy would look the same Now we just commission Michael Jackson to design the top and we will have it made(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
