  1. The phrase "use it or lose it" comes to mind. If Tenderfoot to First Class lays the foundation of scouting (and it does) than these skills have to be ones that are retained. I had more, but after I wrote the above, I decided to stop
  2. Kahuna, I thought the reason why the Jamboree is being set up the way it is was to make the Jamboree much more high adventure-oriented I had thought that many had dismissed the National Jamboree as a convention of "cupcake scouts" who jammed together, ate drank and made merry and spent no time indulging in anything that could remotely be described as "High Adventure" and now the thought is that the New Jamboree style is "Too High Adventure"?
  3. 300 feet? Isn't that the distance between where you splatter and where camp/water supply is?
  4. Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa... And I thought that was about baseball...
  5. bart, man, you are correct about your concerns. I understand them and agree. But the original question is does a male HAVE to be present on a Troop campout and the answer is, no, there is no explicit rule that says that. That its be a very very very good idea that there be one, is something I very much agree with,
  6. Yo bart, man you are going to have to provide a reference for that one. I know of nothing in the Guide to SAfe Scouting that comes close to what you purport. Not saying that there isnt such a reference, just one I have not seen. This is what I would follow: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss01.aspx#e
  7. So, did the young man propose a trip where he, by himself, would take patrol of First Year Scouts on a trip? No? Would a 67ish grandfatherly type man be better? One with an excellent resume of working with youth AND associated with a major Univiersity Athletic program? A retired Football defensive coordinator of two National Champions? Would that be safer? Anybody want Jerry Sandusky as anything on your unit roster? He is about as far away from a College student as you can get and he WAS abusing kids. You do your job and make sure the Youth Protrction rules are followed.(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)
  8. Your right, might makes right and physical intimadation is the way to go, expecting people to live up to their promise of following the rules and the expectation that membership will be denied if you dont follow the rules is way to mature for anyone to actually suscribe to Yes, I am angry about this
  9. Well I tell you Beavah, I moved into the area and was told of the great Ritter, how much respect he had from everyone and how he awarded Silver, GOld, Ranger awards like candy in his Crew. Oddly enough, as a member of the Distrct Advancement Committee for over 10 years I never saw any paperwork on any of the awards his boys wore. WHat it comes down to was he was so much better than the rest of us and I never trusted him. So, he kills himself because the mother of his victim had the texts from his phone talking about what he did. My son was a pupil in his class, a class that involved three three night campouts. So, I reflect over it, as a youth I was sexually abused and as an adult, a youth is sexaully abused by a leader I was the unit commissioner for, a leader I never trusted and when you wonder why I dont always think the best of other adults, well, some have not really shown me a whole lot to trust. He didnt follow youth protection and no one made him. We reaped what we sowed
  10. The Council I serve had an outstanding Venturing leader. He was a Camp School instructor and Disney Teacher of the Year. He was a 7th grade teacher who ran a non-traditional nature based curriculum and there was a selection process to get into his class at the middle school where he taught. He was a very effective teacher and people would flock to his Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense lectures because they were fun and he was very engaging. He was a Captain in the Army Reserves, a Tank Battalion COmmander, He has a Venturing Crew and they did all sorts of wild things, survival week ends with no food, all the stuff the kids wanted to do and he was a god amoung men. The rules meant little to him and two deep leadership was not in his vocabulary. I was the unit commissioner to his Crew and when I questioned COuncil on his behavior they raised their eyebrows and said, Well yeah, that's just Greg, we are lucky to have him. You can look up Gregory Ritter on Google, he killed himself on the morning he was to plead guilty to sexually assaulting a boy he met while serving as a Medical Officer at SUmmer Camp. SOmetimes, its not paronoia, sometimes its actions based on past experiences and not wanting to lose millions because after all, we are all pretty ok nice guys.
  11. So, I could have gone with If I should call you up, invest a dime And you say you belong to me and ease my mind Imagine how the world could be, so very fine So happy together Today it would be text you up and pay nothing since my parents have an unlimited text, data and voice plan but that doesnt trip off the tongue as well
  12. You know, some of this old song is dated, and then again, a lot of it is not... CHORUS: The beat goes on, the beat goes on Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain La de da de de, la de da de da Charleston was once the rage, uh huh History has turned the page, uh huh The mini skirts the current thing, uh huh Teenybopper is our newborn king, uh huh Chorus The grocery store's the super mart, uh huh Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh And men still keep on marching off to war Electrically they keep a baseball score Chorus Grandmas sit in chairs and reminisce Boys keep chasing girls to get a kiss The cars keep going faster all the time Bums still cry "hey buddy, have you got a dime" Chorus
  13. So, to sum up, the only person who can take someone off a unit's charter, is the Chartering Organization. Something of this nature would have to be done by the Chartering Organization Representative or the Insitutional Head. Membership in the BSA however, may be revoked by the Scout Executive, and generally involves broader safety issues such as youth protection or legal issues For the those with Professional experience in the BSA. Is there something similar to what is known in the military as "Conduct Unbecomming"? A catch-all for just about anything? In teacher's Contracts it was known as "Moral Turpitude" Does anything like that exist in the BSA?
  14. Does anybody know if Little League allows openly gay coaches? Pop Warner football?
  15. Of course, there are people who see allowing Gays and Atheists in the BSA as being their "Moral Higher Ground", so both sides can claim to occupy the higher ground while still being polar opposites Will allowing gay leaders generate enough of a membership spike to account for the loss of the LDS units on a national level? Anybody know the average age of the National Membership COmmittee and what their tenure is? The policy will shift when the membership shifts
  16. There is a section where the scout has to explain what he thinks will be the most difficult thing about leading the people who are helping him with the project. I guess I would have to see what leadership skills are verbalized
  17. Wouldnt picking up trash come under the heading of routine labor? The book makes an example of pulling weeds on the football field. Actually, long about November, having weeds on the football field was not a bad thing, anything but cold mud was a bonus but I digress. if you can't pull weeds from a football field, you can't pick up trash either I think
  18. I am pretty sure when the town "fathers" and perhaps even a town "mother" knows when they set the speed limit on city streets, that for some people, these speed limits are more like "guidelines... argghh the pirate code" Just because some people will weasel their way to do what they want does not mean the BSA should not try to be as explicit as they can. THis version is a big improvement, could be better, but we have had worse. The weasels will weasel no matter what, "its what they do, its all they do" to paraphase John Connor
  19. stlscouter, Since an Eagle Project can't benefit the Boy Scouts of America in any way (That part hasn't changed), then the development of this new version of the Eagle Scout Proposal may be a good servce project, but its no Eagle Project
  20. a 10 year old patrol Leader? Wow! I guess anything can happen and the only way to see if patrols of 12 work for you is for you to try them
  21. the things that have killed Sea Scouting around here, and I mean Northeast Pa, is the cost of the boat and upkeep, the licensing of the trailer and then the insurance of the trailer and the boat and where its to be stored. We have a couple of rivers, but not a huge "aquatic" culture. I can see Sea Scouting on the coasts along the great lakes where one can use terms like maritime and not be looked at sideways. For the rest of us landlubbers, its a struggle. The Councils "ship" yes, singular, has been up and down so much its referred to as the SS Yoyo
  22. How could honoring your word ever be considered humiliating?
  23. PappaDaddy you said: "Personally, I thought snipe hunts were great fun...on both sides of the burlap sack." My story is about a snipe hunt that was decidely not fun "on both sides", that was the reason I posted it. I have been thinking about this topic, and if upfront the prospective troop members and parents/guardians are told, if you lose stuff and we find it, you will be singing to get it back and they join. Then I expect they will be singing for lost items. They knew the rules when they joined. If a troop says hey, we have some real pranksters in the group so watch your step because you may end up with your shorts up the flag pole or something like that and they join, then they should not be surpised to find themselves duct taped to their cot some morning If you accept the terms of the group, then you accepted them, but they should be known
  24. Beavah possibly you would have laughed with me, except I wasnt laughing and no one was cheering me in a good way, just the cheers you get when a tray is dumped in a crowded cafeteria and comments as to how absolutely stupid I was I may have had a singular event. Not all people may have reacted I did. I did not fare well as a youth. I took my fathers advice and popped the neighborhood bully in the nose and got the stuffing knocked out of me. Drives me crazy when I hear about the best way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him. Didnt work for me, I would never give that advice. I was the target of abuse and humiliation until I got big enough to beat the tormentors. I promised to protect others, I could just as well have said the only way to get along to inflict the same amount of pain others have inflicted on me. You take your chances and see what happens
